RE: Dr. Alecs Hywel’s notes meeting Patient S.J. - TAPE 01

ANOMALY: Eve

INCURSION DATE: June 8th, 1982

"After the kerfuffle surrounding Nixon’s incompetence, the dissolution of MK Ultra was most certainly a devastating loss to our probe into the human psyche. Helms’ hasty destruction of years of research is unforgivable! Nevertheless, I’ve been quietly speaking to Dr. Cameron to continue his research on Subproject 68. We’ve been quite interested in a particular patient’s progress.

Patient S.J. came to Subproject 68 under the impression that she would be receiving treatment for her severe insomnia. Patient S.J. consented to a polysomnography to determine any other underlying conditions that could be affecting her abnormal sleep patterns. She explained when she was able to sleep, she would experience vivid, life-like dreams. Most interestingly, they all seemed to be recurring dreams. She explained the dreams felt as they had some sort of order to them, as if each dream added to the previous one.

While prepping the patient, she fainted. Interestingly, the sensors that were connected showed signs of REM sleep. She was dreaming almost immediately after losing consciousness! While an interesting development, we ran some blood work to determine if the patient may be anemic. The results indicated she was actually pregnant. I consulted with Dr. Cameron if we should even continue due to her unknown pregnancy, but he merely shrugged and said, "If the patient didn’t disclose she was pregnant, perhaps she didn't know," and urged to continue with the tests. While I was conflicted with the decision to proceed, the readings we gathered during her syncope, piqued my interest.

… I dismissed the attending nurses and advised I would continue the procedure alone. When the patient was in a more amenable state, I asked if we could continue with the tests. While She seemed desperate to get a decent night’s rest, she seemed hesitant to allow me to continue. While applying the rest of the censors, she gripped my hand tightly. I advised her that a sleep study is completely harmless and not invasive. But her grasp tightened and she pulled me close to her. Her voice was shaky and her palms sweaty. She nervously explained that a figure appeared to her while she was unconscious. She described it as a tall, slender character devoid of a face; that it begged to be released. Perhaps it was left over delirium from her fainting spell or nerves about the procedure, but could this be a part of her recurring dream? I helped her recline in the bed and encouraged her to relax, but she seemed increasingly reluctant. Readings showed an accelerated heart rate, she almost seemed terrified to fall asleep. I administered a light sedative to help calm her nerves. She continued to hold my hand, and stare at me in a horrified silence, until she finally fell asleep."

It is has an important message and information for snake bites

Anti Sera

The product is prepared from hyperimmunised equines against the venoms of the four most commonly encountered poisonous snakes.

* Cobra (Naja-Naja)

* Common Krait (Bungarus Caeruleus)

* Russell's Viper (Vipera Russelli)

* Saw Scaled Viper (Echis Carinatus)

Plasma obtained from the hyperimmunized equines is enzyme refined, purified and concentrated. Each ml. of the reconstituted Anti Snake Venom Serum neutralizes not less than the following quantities of standard venoms when tested in white mice.

-

Cobra

0.6 mg

Common-Krait

0.45 mg

Russell's Viper

0.6 mg

Saw scaled Viper 0.45 mg

Snake venom envenomation is serious and could be life threatening.

In case of Cobra and Krait poisoning, constitutional symptoms are more prominent than local pain and swelling. General intoxication is soon followed by a sense of creeping paralysis begining in the legs and ascending to the head by way of trunk. Paralysis of the muscles of the eyelids, staggering gait, incoordination of speech, paralysis of the limbs, drooping of the head and complete paralysis of all volunatry muscles develop. Nausea and vomiting frequently occur. Breathing gets more and more difficult and finally stops. In the case of Krait poisoning, in addtion there are convulsions and violent abdominal pains due to internal harmorrages.

In cases of Russell's and Saw-scaled Viper poisoning, the local symptons are prominent and severe. There is great and persistent pain and intensive swelling at the site of the bite. The venom of the viper contains several enzymes which may possibly act synergistically to produce shock, consumption coagulopathy, spontaneous haemorrhages in the organs and tissues, acute necrosis and death. There is constant and incessant oozing of blood from the punctures. Sloughing occurs permitting other infections. The constitutional symptoms are characterised by haemorrhages, both external and internal. Haemorrhages in the abdomen are responsible for pain, tenderness and vomiting. Death is due to heart failure, there is no paralysis. The venoms of Cobra and Krait act very rapidly if a large amount of venom is absorbed into the circulation. Hence it must be understood that unless the absorption of the venom into the circulation is retarded by ligation, the anti-snake-venom-serum does not get a fair chance to neutralise the venom and save the victim.

Treatment of Snake Bite

First-Aid

1.

Keep the patient calm let the patient lie down to ensure that the bitten part is at rest with minimal activity in a well ventilated quiet place.

2.

Clean the bitten part by washing with care without disfiguring or defacing bite mark. Apply a broad and firm antiseptic dressing/bandage.

Specific Serum Treatment

1. Immediate neutralisation of the circulating venom is of utmost importance.

2. For fast effect, the Anti Snkae Venom Serum should be injected intravenously as soon as possible after the bite. As a first dose, at least 20 ml. of the reconstituted serum should be injected intravenously very gradually (for every 1 ml per minute).

3. The second dose should be repeated two hours after the first dose or even earlier. If the symptoms persist. If the symptoms, which vary with different snake venoms, indicate persistence of venom action, further doses should be repeated aftr every six hours until the symptoms disappear completely.

4. At present, there is no simple method to measure the amount of circulating venom in the body, therefore the antivenin dose cannot be accurately recommended. It has been found that the clotting time returns to normal about two hours after the neutralisation of venom therefore repeated testing of clotting time after the antivenom therapy is necessary. Close monitoring of the patient's condition with urine output, BP,pulse, respiration and urea and electrolyte estimations must be done. Local pain and necrosis at the site of bite may need attention, but is usually not very serious except in special circumstances such as a bite on the digit which can become gangrenous.

5. In case of Viper bite, some of Anti Snake Venom Serum should also be injected around the site of the snake bite additionally to prevent gangrene which is one of the more distructive effects of localised Viper Venom on tissue.

6. First Aid treatment should never be relaxed even when the serum is administered. Intravenous injection of a reconstituted Anti Snake Venom Serum in equine serum sensitive subjects can produce very severe serum reactions and even acute anaphylaxis. Further care should be taken to prevent these reactions.

7. Intravenous injection is the most effective but if expert medical aid is not available the serum may be administered by a subcutaneous or through intramuscular route. It is more efficacious to dilute the serum 5-10 times with normal or glucose saline and be administered as slowly as possible.

Associated Treatments

1. In case of Russell's and Saw-scaled viper envenomation, sedatives such as small doses of barbiturate and/or analgesics (e.g. aspirin) may be given to relieve nervousness and pain.

2. In case of syncope / shock, strychnine, pituitrin or other general stimulants like coramine may be used. The use of corticosteroids would help minimise serum reaction and other minor allergic reactions.

3. Treatment of antibiotics may also be given to combat local sepsis in severely envenomated cases, infusion of a large amount of physiological saline or transfusion of blood or plasma may not only bring substantial releif but may be life saving in borderline cases.

4. Cases of respiratory paralysis should be treated by tracheostomy and artificial respiration.

5. Anti Tetanus injection may be given.

Directions for Use

Reconstitution of Lyophilised Serum

1. Draw 10 ml. of sterile water for injection in a sterile syringe.

2. Transfer the sterile water from the syringe to the serum vial and shake well till the contents dissolve.

3. Let the vial stand for one minute for the serum to clear. The reconstituted serum will become crystal- clear and ready for injection. Froth and undissolved particles, if any, should be left in the vial.

4. For the second and subsequent injections, you will have more time to dissolve the lyophilised serum. For these add 10 ml. sterile water for injection to the serum vial and rotate it between the palms of your hands until the serum is fully dissolved, and let the vial stand for serum to clear.

Storage

Liquid serum is very unstable at room temperature. It requires storage at 0° to 4°. Even then it deteriorates, and 2 years from the date of manufacture, the serum becomes unfit for use. In India, proper cold-storage facilities are not freely available and, therefore, liquid serum may only be stored at the risk of very rapid deterioration. Lyophilised serum obviates this difficulty. It is many times more stable than liquid serum. It should retain its potency for 5 years even if stored in any cool dark place. Thus Anti Snake Venom Serum can be made available for use far away from cold-storage facilities. It can be safely kept at rural dispensaries and even carried in a haversack if an occasion demands it. However, it is preferable to store it in a refrigerator if one is available.

Prevention of Serum Reaction

Before injection of Anti-Snake Venom Serum, it is necessary to enquire from the patient:

1. Whether he has had injections of serum (eg. anti-tetanus or anti-diphtheria serum) before.

2. Whether there is personal or familial history of allergy, i.e. asthma, eczema or drug allergy.

The sensitivity of the patient to Anti-Snake Venom Serum is tested by injecting subcutaneously 0.1 ml of this serum diluted 1:10. The patient should be observed for 30 minutes for local and general reactions. If the test dose shows either local reaction such as flare or general anaphylactic reaction such as pallor, sweating, nausea, vomiting, urticaria, and fall of blood pressure, these should be countered immediately by intramuscular injection of 1 ml of 1:1000 adrenaline and with corticosteroids which should be always kept handy.

In allergic or sensitive patients, it is better to inject the Anti-Snake Venom Serum under cover of anti-histaminics such as antistine (100 mg.) and hydrocortisone (100 mg.) intramuscularly 15 to 30 minutes before the administration of Anti-Snake Venom Serum. The administration of adrenaline and hydrocortisone may be repeated if necessary.

When symptoms of snakebite are severe it may not be advisable to wait for 30 minutes to observe reactions to test-dose of serum. In such cases it may be better to inject 1 ml. of 1:1000 adrenaline intramuscularly at the same time as the serum in order to lessen the risk of anaphylaxis. Half the dose of adrenaline may be repeated 15 minutes later if necessary.

Packing

One dose vial of lyophilised Anti-Snake Veno Serum with 10 ml. ampoule of Sterile water for injection.

Good Luck with your move

What looks like the main building of several making up the Crownsville State Hospital. The wikpedia article on this institution is fascinating:

The Crownsville Hospital Center is a former psychiatric hospital located in Crownsville, Maryland.

The facility was enabled by an act of the Maryland General Assembly on 11 April 1910 as the Hospital for the Negro Insane of Maryland. This act also explicitly specified that the facility should not be located in Baltimore. On 13 Dec., 1910 the Board of Managers purchased farm land located at Crownsville, Maryland for the sum of $19,000 which had formerly been farmed for willow and tobacco. On 23 May 1910 Dr. Robert Winterode was designated the first Superintendent.

The facility was founded following a 1908 report of "The Maryland State Lunacy Commission" which stated:

"It is with a feeling of shame and humiliation that the conditions which exist in the State among the negro insane are chronicled and known to the public. Righteous indignation cannot help being aroused when one sees or reads of the most horrible cruelties being practiced upon these unfortunates.... The most urgent need at this time is a hospital for the negro insane of Maryland...."

As early as 1899 the Maryland Lunacy Commission in its Annual Report stated

"At present there are no negro insane at the second hospital (Springfield) and the comparatively small number at Spring Grove is a distinct embarrassment to the institution."

Again in its 1900 report it stated:

"The condition of the negro insane at Montevue Hospital at Frederick is shameful and should at once be remedied. The beasts of the field are better cared for than the poor negroes at Montevue."

The first group of 12 patients arrived at Crownsville on 13 March 1911. Patients lived in a work camp located in a willow curing house adjacent to one of the willow ponds. Dr. Winterode worked with them to prepare roads and to harvest the tobacco and willow crops on the property. Additional patients were transferred in July and Sept. 1911. Construction started on the first large building, A Building in Oct., 1912. Patients were used to work on the construction of the hospital in addition to working in its day to day functions. As reported in the State Lunacy Commission Report of Dec.,1912, patients worked as "hod carriers" and assistants to electricians and plumbers. Construction necessitated that they push "barrows of concrete up a tramway three and a half stories in height." They excavated "10000 cubic yards of earth in about 10 weeks." In addition they unloaded 238 cars of cement, stone and other building materials. "The laundry work for the patients is done by two adult males and an epileptic imbecile 10 years of age who has been taught to feed the ringer(sic) and at which he has become quite adept. During the past year (1912) these three have washed and ironed over 40,000 pieces."

Within a short time smallpox and scarlet fever struck the patients. Water quality was also cited as a problem in those early years. Tuberculosis was a constant threat and is mentioned in the annual reports of those early years because there was no real provision for the isolation of the patients except in the summer months when there was a temporary open building for them. According to the Annual and Biennial Report of the State Lunacy Commission 1914-1915 in the section on Crownsville Hospital it was reported that "The percentage of deaths based upon admissions(268 patients) was 38.43. The percentage of deaths calculated upon admissions due to tuberculosis was 29.85. The percentage of deaths based upon average attendance was 32.21." Tuberculosis remained a problem for many years.

It was not until 1939 that the Commissioner of Mental Hygiene announced: "The opening at Springfield State Hospital of a separate building for the care of mental patients suffering from tuberculosis is one of the outstanding achievements of 1939. In this building all patients from Spring Grove, Springfield and Eastern Shore State Hospital who are suffering from tuberculosis and who represent a danger to other patients or who need special treatment will be cared for." Excluded from this new, active treatment program at the all-white Springfield Hospital Center were the African/American Crownsville TB patients. On 29 Oct. 1915, two hundred Baltimore City patients were transferred from Bay View (now Johns Hopkins Hospital). This transfer was made in five special railway cars.

In 1920 with a patient census of 521 there were two physicians including the superintendent. There were also 17 nurses and attendants, 1 social worker and 18 other help. The data from the 1920 U.S.Census report has the average age of Crownsville patients at 42 years. The youngest was 14 years and there were three patients in their eighties. In the occupations' section of the report 68% were listed as holding hospital job assignments. Therapies initially included hydrotherapy and sedatives. In the 1930s insulin shock was introduced. Malaria treatment in which patients were infected with malaria pathogins was begun in 1942. As many as twenty patients at a time were inoculated. According to the 1948 Annual Report when Crownsville had about 1800 patients,103 patients received shock treatments, 56 patients received malaria/penicillin treatments and 33 received a lobotomy.

During the years when lobotomies were a common procedure Dr. Morgenstern, the Crownsville Superintendent was opposed to them. In his 1950 Annual Report he said that Crownsville has "very few lobotomies." He also expressed his opposition to the trend "to rely upon this operation to make the institutional case more manageable." In a report of March 1954 the Superintendent stated that lobotomies were not being done.

According to a Jan., 1947 report on medical care in Maryland, the normal occupancy of private and public mental hospital beds was 7453. Of these only Crownsville had African American patients in its 1044 occupied beds as of August 1946. Hospital conditions deteriorated markedly in the 1940s due to overcrowding and staff shortages. The staffing of the wards during the period of World War II was very inadequate. In a letter of May 22, 1945 to the State's Governor from the Commissioner of Mental Hygiene he said: "A few nights ago at Crownsville in the division which houses ninty criminal, insane men there was one employee on duty."

In a memo of 2 Nov.1944 to the Commissioner of Mental Hygiene (Dr. Preston) a visitor to the Division for the Feebleminded at Crownsville described his experiences. After praising the appearance of the girls' ward he described the boys' ward as follows:

"The boys side was very dirty, the boys themselves, the dormitories and dayroom. Sitting at dinner were twenty seven boys completely nude, most of them spilling food all over themselves. There was on that day only one attendant on the boys' side who was definitely working hard."

The Baltimore Sun paper's articles on Maryland's mental health system were published in 1948-1949 under the title "MARYLAND'S SHAME'. Following are statements from the articles relating to Crownsville:

"More than 1800 men, women and children are herded into its buildings meant for not more than 1100" "Crownsville is also the dumping ground for feeble minded negro children and epileptics." "The children's buildings are among the most crowded in the institution." "One hundred and fifteen girls spend most of their days in a single, long bare play room with virtually nothing to play with." "There are so few attendants that the older girls have to carry the helpless ones bodily to and from meals." "Not one of the more than 200 boys and girls at Crownsville is getting any formal schooling at all." "Some of the epileptics lie all day on the bare floor."

In 1929 there were 55 discharges from Crownsville but 92 deaths. The census began to rise dramtically until it peaked in 1955 at 2719 patients. The staff of Crownsville Hospital had been all white until 1948.

Through the 1940s the NAACP had advocated for the hiring of African-American staff but encountered resistance from the Commissioner of Mental Hygiene. Finally in 1948 the new superintendent of Crownsville hired the first African-American staff member, Vernon Sparks in the Psychology Department. Gwendolyn Lee was hired later in the Social Work Department. The Crownsville Superintendent still was not permitted to hire African-American staff in direct care positions. This would not happen until 1952. By 1959 45% of Crownsville's staff was African-American in contrast to 6%-8% in the other large state mental hospitals.

The adolescent patient population was integrated in 1962 and the adult population in 1963. An earlier integration attempt had been made in Dec.,1954 when the Crownsville Superintendent transferred 15 children ages 2-6 years from Crownsville to the all white Rosewood State Training School. The Superintendent of Crownsville was threatened with a reprimand by the Commissioner of Mental Health and resigned the next year(1955).

Industrial therapy(unpaid work)was an important part of life at Crownsville. In the Spring of 1958 more than 600 patients had work assignments in more than 55 placements which included "dental assistant", "receptionist", "librarian" and "hospital aide". Work was considered to be part of therapy and "patients unable or unwilling to participate were considered too ill to enjoy the privilege of freedom of the grounds." Staff shortages were always a problem.

In 1953 the Superintendent, Dr. Eichert, reported that in "A" Building there were 560 patients and four attendants in the evening and four in the day. In the Baltimore Sunpaper of June 1953 there was given a description of the "old ward for highly disturbed women": "Here are truly the creatures of the dark. The sickest ones are kept in a room as forbidding as a dungeon, where they live in a state of odorous untidiness, many of them refusing to wear clothes.Twice a day a bucket and two cups are brought to the door, to give the inmates a drink. There are 78 patients here and 28 beds. These and other patients on the same floor-a total of 96-have the use of three toilets, three wash basins and one tub. They cannot be bathed daily because it was explained, hot water is not available every day."

In a letter to the Maryland Governor of 23 June 1952 the Chairman of the Mental Hygiene Board of Review asked:

"Why is less being done relatively to relieve the distressing overcrowding at Crownsville than at any of the other institutions or why this institution is allowed a patient per capita cost of $1085; an amount less than any of the other hospitals; fifty percent less than two of them...?"

In a letter to a Johns Hopkins Hospital social worker of 3 Dec.,1956 Dr. Ralph Meng, the Crownsville Superintendent expressed his concern that community agencies were not willing to accept their responsibilities in providing services to discharged Crownsville patients. He said:

"Just as a guess, I would think that about 40% of our patients could be handled without hospitalization if anybody made an effort to do so."

In 1964 the first African-American Superintendent was appointed. He established a day treatment program and a school mental health outreach program in addition to supporting the mental health clinics in Baltimore and the Southern Maryland Counties. Patients in Crownsville clinics were given free medication. There were established training programs in psychiatry, psychology, social work, dance therapy and pastoral counseling. Crownsville had an active foreign students' program for those in medicine, social work and psychology. In the ten years prior to its closing it hosted students from Israel, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Turkey and Chile. The Hospital also trained Spanish speaking therapists when that need was identified.

The hospital staff was well known for its outspoken resistance to the pressures to place patients in public shelters with the resulting "dumping" of patients onto the streets and into the jails. Improvements in psychiatric treatment, rigid admission policies and better funding of outpatient treatment and residential services resulted in the hospital's census declining to 200 patients by the year 2000.

The hospital grounds became the central county site for many social, school and health programs and the hospital finally closed in July 2004. Those patients in need of further psychiatric hospitalization were transferred to two of Maryland's remaining hospitals. Its original buildings are still standing and today portions of the campus are occupied by various tenants.

The site is also the location of Crownsville Hospital's patient cemetery. This historic site was rededicated in 2004. Approximately 1600 patients are buried in graves marked by numbers only with the more recent having patient names.

Information on Crownsville Hospital can be found in the Maryland State Archives Collections which contains reference materials from the Hospital, the Auxiliary, Paul Lurz and Doris Morgenstern Wachsler.

One aspect of WWII medical care that was, to say the least, not up to speed was the area of psychiatric care. The care of neuropsychiatric wounds were ultimately oversaw by the Army surgeon, although there were psychiatrists employed in the different echelon station levels. How often do you think these patients got the first priority? Often at the echelon 1 and 2 stations psychological issues were handled by administering mild sedative and approximately 40% were then returned to battle. Those who were progressed on to echelon 3 stations generally stay 5-8 days and approx 20% of those returned to battle. So approximately 60% of neuropsychiatric patients were returned to the battle field. This type of standard of care in the field of psychological care was published in 1949 well after the war. So you can see we still had a long way to go.

In today’s battlefield the “invisible war” is still an understudied and under par area of care. The main issues at hand is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, major depression, or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Today there are many psychiatrists employed at every level of battlefield care and psychologial injuries are at least acknowledged. But, it wasn't until the 1970's that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was formally defined and adopted. Since 2001 1.6 million U.S. soldiers have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan (Tanialian et al 2008). Early evidence is showing that the several deployments without much break is taking a greater toll on our troops than physical injuries (Tanialian et al 2008). At least 26% of returning troops are testing for psychological disorders yet many troops fail to disclose any issues they are experiencing when leaving a combat zone. Maybe out of fear of delaying their trip home. In a recent survey reason’s given for not reporting psychological issues ranged from distrust in professionals to fear of harming career with mental illness diagnosis. Attempts have been made in improving our system of caring for returning troops. President Bush through the President’s Commission on Care for Returning Wounded Warriors has made benefits more available, increased funding for programs, and called on VA to increase level of care. Not only the government lies at fault. As earlier stated it is ultimately up to the soldier to seek care and to follow up. There is huge room for improvement mainly in the continuum of care in providing psychologically wounded soldiers with the care needed to have greatest healing impact.

You don’t have to see a soldier in distress or a traumatic picture for you to see the great things our soldiers need in the way of medical care. But, it is the best way to get the message across and influence action. In the words of Commander Ruff in “Ruff’s War,”“the sights we witnessed were haunting, and the smells of this Hell invaded our senses and penetrated deep into our very souls,” you get a good feeling for the hell that is burned into our troops. It is shown that troops who are exposed to smells of death or have witnessed deaths of comrades have a 30% greater chance of being psychologically effected as opposed to the troops who are injured themselves or have engage in hand to hand combat (Tanielian et al 2008). When you see these types of statistics who comes to mind as being possibly the most impacted group? Could it be the medical group sent to care for the troops? Today’s medical sciences provide a better understanding than ever before on the effects of war but the gaps still exists. Suggesting we still have a long road ahead. Maybe there is not a best care for healing psychological trauma. Maybe that is simply an unavoidable injury of wartime and a diagnosis is an incurable stigma that will continue to forever keep troops from accurately reporting injury and receiving adequate medical attention. But as a society we should still strive to try every avenue for those who have given so much for us.

I am sure there are good lessons that come from war time as well. You may say what good can come from a trip to Hell. But, there is always an upside. Even if it is so slender you have to have a microscope to see it. Coming to grips with your mortality could inspire a sense of who you really are. Seeing the unspeakable could drive you to figure out what most people only learn on their death bed. That life is short, you have to get out there let people know who you are and what you can do. Be who you want to be. I think that is what life is supposed to be about. So many young marines I know that return from deployment are seen as reckless or unattached. But, so many of them I can just see this I want to just live attitude that makes life great for them. While only an approximate 10-12% suffer psychological trauma there are 80-90% that come home with a renewed appreciation for life (Taniallian et al 2008).

Mignonette (Reseda) is a genus of fragrant herbaceous plants native to the Mediterranean region and southwest Asia, from the Canary Islands and Iberia east to northwest India. The species include annuals, biennials and perennials, and grow to 40-130 cm tall. The leaves form a basal rosette at ground level, and then spirally arranged up the stem. The flowers are produced in a slender spike, each flower small (4-6 mm diameter), white, yellow, orange, or green, with four to six petals. The fruit is a small dry capsule containing several seeds.

Other common names include Weld (R. luteola), Dyer's Rocket, Bastard Rocket and Sweet Reseda.

Propagation is by seed, which is surface-sown directly into the garden or grass verge. The plant does not take well to transplanting and should not be moved after sowing.

Mignonette flowers are extremely fragrant. It is grown for the sweet ambrosial scent of its flowers. It is used in flower arrangements, perfumes and potpourri. A Victorian favourite, it was commonly grown in pots and in window-boxes to scent the city air. It was used as a sedative and a treatment for bruises in Roman times. The volatile oil is used in perfumery. The yellow dye was obtained from the roots of R. luteola by the first millennium BC, and perhaps earlier than either woad or madder. Use of this dye came to an end at the beginning of the twentieth century, when cheaper synthetic yellow dyes came into use.

Charles Darwin used R. odorata in his studies of self-fertilised plants, which he documented in The Effects of Cross and Self-Fertilisation in the Vegetable Kingdom.

It is a miracle after 15 years of debilitating chonic pain.

Dr. Fox a pain management specilist in Fort Lauderdale FL did a proceedure called a radiofrequencey leisioning of 7 nerves (he severd them by burng them out). I may not have pain for 10 years. The proceedure was't as bad as I thought. I was under conscious sedation and they talked to me the whole time about nonsence, where do I live? do I have pets? anything to distract me and keep me awake.

The MD inserts a needle into the facet joint nerve along the spine and threads a wire and heats it to 90* and burns out the nerve---when he hit the nerve it was pressure and some pain but I could bear it with the help of a little friend (anesthesia) and I told the anesthesiologiest to push more propofal in to take the edge off when it was too much, and he did. I moaned, and did not scream so It was not all that bad. I wiggled my toes and had no paralysis--nor death--lol. It was a little worse than a root canal but if it works, I would do it again no sweat! I was sore yesterday, came home and took a sedative and tylenol and went to bed for 6 hours. and have NO PAIN at all toady! If I wasn't still groggy, I'd go out.

Alas, I am planning to read all day in my recliner. There is light at the end of the tunnel. This may be the happy ending for the book I have been writing about liviing with back pain called "Back Stories" YAY BABA! Thanks for your prayers and well wishes--see I'm even up to taking picures and sitting at the computer for a few minutes! Yeee haaa!

The Californian poppy is a bitter sedative herb that acts as a diuretic, relieves pain, relaxes spasms and promotes perspiration. The whole plant is harvested when in flower and dried for use in tinctures and infusions. It is taken internally in the treatment of nervous tension, anxiety, insomnia and incontinence (especially in children). The watery sap is mildly narcotic and has been used to relieve toothache. It is similar in its effect to the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) but is much milder in its action and does not depress the central nervous system. Another report says that it has a markedly different effect upon the central nervous system, that it is not a narcotic but tends to normalize psychological function. Its gently antispasmodic, sedative and analgesic actions make it a valuable herbal medicine for treating physical and psychological problems in children. It may also prove beneficial in attempts to overcome bedwetting, difficulty in sleeping and nervous tension and anxiety. An extract of the root is used as a wash on the breasts to suppress the flow of milk in lactating females.

Hot flashes can really be a hassle. They can be stressful as they come and go without warning. Most people look to their doctor to prescribe them accordingly with medicine that may ease the symptoms of hot flashes.

Taking traditional synthetic medicine can sometimes be a hassle as medication can be expensive and produce unwanted side effects.

Essential oils are a wonderful alternative traditional synthetic medicine as essential oils are natural, affordable, and have little to no side effects. This is your ultimate guide to finding the best essential oils to treat hot flashes!

Best Essential Oils For Hot Flashes - What Exactly Are Hot Flashes?

Before we get into knowing the cure, it is best that we know what hot flashes are and what are the condition’s causes, symptoms, risk factors, and complications. It is most important to know your condition before you treat it, for this reason I've listed down below all of the things that you need to know about hot flashes!

What Are The Symptoms?

Hot flashes are a quick feeling of heat that is usually followed by having a red flushed face and sweating. Scientists have not exactly determined the cause of hot flashes but they are usually related to changes in air circulation.

The symptoms of hot flashes include:

Skin that suddenly feels warm

Experiencing redness of skin on the face, neck, ears, and chest

Sweating

A heartbeat that is faster than usual

Tingling in your fingers

Aside from the symptoms that I've cited above, many people tend to feel cold and get chills when their bout of hot flashes goes away.

While hot flashes are common during the day, they can also occur at night. Hot flashes that occur at night are called night sweats. Night sweats can be a hassle as it can cause you to have a hard time to sleep.

On the other hand, a hot flush is a hot flash that comes with redness in the face and the neck.

The duration of hot flashes may vary but they tend to occur for short periods of time during menopause.

Hot flashes are a trademark symbol of menopause. Women who are undergoing menopause tend to experience hot flashes as often as a few times a day. Although menopause is the leading cause, it isn't the only cause.

What Are The Causes And Risk Factors?

The exact cause of hot flashes have not yet been figured out by scientists, but it is often thought that hot flashes are caused by changes in air circulation and hormone levels. Hot flashes have been found to be triggered by several factors.

Potential triggers of hot flashes include:

Spicy food

Hot drinks

Alcoholic beverages

Warm temperatures

Tobacco smoking

Tight clothing

Stress, anxiety, depression

Pregnancy

Chemotherapy

Hyperthyroidism

Spinal lesions

Certain medications

Besides the things that I've listed above, there are a number of other things that can trigger hot flashes.

Studies have also shown that ethnicity plays a factor on the likelihood of an individual to get hot flashes. People of African descent have been shown to report more instances of menopause caused hot flashes than their European and Asian counterparts.

I advise that you consult your doctor as soon as you can if you experience hot flashes on a regular basis. A doctor would be able to accurately pinpoint the cause of your hot flashes and advise you on how to deal with them accordingly.

Are There Any Complications?

Yes. Night time hot flashes or night sweats can wake you from your slumber and in time cause chronic insomnia. Hot flashes have also been linked to the development of heart disease and bone loss.

Hot flashes may seem like a medical condition that should not be of concern but it may serve as a gateway for many other medical conditions that can be life threatening. It is very important that you not take hot flashes for granted and deal with them accordingly.

Diagnosis

There aren't really any tests to diagnose hot flashes. Instead, your doctor may diagnose you based on your description of your symptoms. Your doctor may also sometimes ask you to take a blood test in order to find out if you're in menopausal transition.

How To Self-Manage Hot Flashes

If you're experiencing mild hot flashes, I suggest that you take on these lifestyle changes to manage them:

Stay Cool

It is widely accepted that slight variations in your body's core temperature may cause hot flashes. I advise that you dress in layers so that you may remove your clothing accordingly if you feel warm.

Another way to stay cool is to open your electric fan, windows, or air conditioner. If possible, lower your room temperature.

Lastly, if you feel that you're about to experience a bout of hot flashes, drink something cold as soon as you can. Cold drinks are great for lowering your body temperature and alleviating hot flashes.

Relax

There are some people that find relief from their hot flashes through meditation and other stress reducing techniques.

Even if stress reducing techniques don't completely eliminate your hot flashes, you should do them anyway as they might provide other benefits, such as easing sleep disturbances that tend to occur with menopause.

Watch Your Diet

Caffeinated beverages, spicy food, and alcoholic beverages are all known to trigger hot flashes. It is most important that you learn to recognize what food and drinks cause hot flashes and avoid them for the better.

Lose Weight

If you are overweight or obese, it is best to shed off those unnecessary pounds as losing weight may aid in easing your hot flashes.

Do Not Smoke

Smoking has been linked by both doctors and scientists to hot flashes. By not smoking, you dramatically reduce your chances of getting hot flashes.

Aside from reducing the risk of getting hot flashes, not smoking also greatly reduces your chances of getting deadly diseases that are known to be caused by smoking. You'll be doing yourself a favor by not smoking!

Best Essential Oils For Hot Flashes - What Are The Best For Your Hot Flashes?

Like I said earlier, essential oils are a great alternative to traditional medications if you're looking to manage the symptoms of your hot flashes. Experts have found several different essential oils to be able to provide utmost relief when applied on various areas of the body.

The essential oils that relieve hot flashes come from a variety of different plants.

Below are the five essential oils that have been found to be great for alleviating the symptoms that are caused by hot flashes!

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary sage essential oil is extracted from the herbaceous plant, salvia sclarea. People have been using the clary sage plant medicinally for more than a thousand years as an eye cleanser. The term ‘clary’ comes from the Latin word ‘clarus’, which means clarifying or cleansing.

The essential oil that is extracted from this plant has been found to possess antibacterial, anti-

inflammatory, carminative, sedative, hypotensive, euphoric, and antidepressant properties.

Aside from being used for medicinal purposes, clary sage essential oil is also used in the cosmetic industry as it is a common ingredient in many deodorants, herbal soaps, shampoos, face washes, and other hygiene products.

To relieve yourself of hot flashes, all you need to do is to rub three drops of diluted clary sage oil across the back of your neck or your feet.

If you want even quicker relief, dab a few drops of the oil on a napkin or a swab of cotton and inhale and exhale.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is actually the most used essential oil in the entire world. Ancient records tell us that lavender essential oil has a deep history and has been used medicinally and religiously for more than two millennia.

The Egyptians famously used lavender oil for mummification and as a perfume. Aside from the Egyptians, the Greeks and the Romans also used lavender oil for cooking, scenting air, and bathing.

Lavender oil is great for hot flashes as it balances your hormones and soothes perineal discomfort. Aside from being able to relieve perineal discomfort and balance your hormones, Lavender essential oil also has the ability to promote feelings of relaxation and improve the quality of your sleep.

This amazing essential oil is a perfect alternative for those who are taking sleeping aid medications as lavender oil does not have side effects.

Hot flashes are guaranteed to be a thing of the past with lavender essential oil!

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil has a fresh and invigorating minty aroma. This amazing essential oil is very versatile and has been found to be great for countless different kinds of applications.

Scientists have widely studied this oil and have discovered countless alkaloids and compounds that benefit our health.

The peppermint plant is actually a natural hybrid of the water mint and the spearmint plants. Native to the European continent, this plant grows to a maximum of 60 cm tall. Peppermint plants bloom from July to August, where they sprout tiny purple flowers.

Peppermint oil is extracted from the whole plant above ground just before flowering. The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the fresh or partly dried plant.

This wonderful essential oil is perfect for relieving the discomfort brought upon by hot flashes. For quick relief, all you need to do is to apply two drops of this oil on a tissue and hold the tissue up to your nose and breathe in slowly.

Basil Essential Oil

Basil oil comes from the basil plant that we all know and love. We often associate basil with Italian cuisine, but did you know that the essential oil that can be extracted from the plant has loads of health benefits?

The essential oil that comes from basil is mostly used for respiratory, muscular, and joint support.

Aside from what I stated above, basil oil is also great for increasing your estrogen levels. Increased estrogen levels in women often improve moods and therefore reduce stress and unwanted bouts of hot flashes.

To use basil essential oil, all you need to do is to rub the diluted oil on your feet and the back of your neck.

You're sure to get quick relief with this amazing essential oil from the basil plant!

Citrus Essential Oil

Citrus oil aromatherapy has been found by scientists and doctors to have a wide array of benefits for women who are suffering from menopause.

A study which was conducted back in 2014 proved that postmenopausal women who inhaled this essential oil experienced an increase in libido and a decrease in symptoms brought upon by menopause.

Women who inhaled citrus essential oil are said to experience a decrease in blood pressure, as well as an improved pulse rate and a more balanced estrogen level.

Aside from being beneficial for blood circulation and hormone regulation, citrus essential oil has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties. Your hot flashes and aches and pains are sure to become a thing of the past with this essential oil!

Best Essential Oils For Hot Flashes - What To Consider Before Treating Your Hot Flashes With Essential Oil

Essential oils are a great alternative to traditional medicine but like all medicines, essential oils aren't perfect for everyone.

I generally don't recommend essential oils to people who have sensitive skin as essential oils may sometimes may do more harm than good due to allergic reactions that may arise when a person who has sensitive skin uses them.

Before applying any kinds of essential oil, I believe that it is best that you conduct a simple test to make sure that you aren't allergic to the oil that you plan on using.

To test your skin, all you need to do is to put a dab of the oil that you wish to use on your skin and wait for fifteen to thirty minutes. If there aren’t any harsh reactions, then you're clear to proceed.

Edible Uses: Tea, Mead,

The herb and the fruit are sometimes used as a tea substitute. The flowers can be used in making mead.

CAUTION: Skin contact with the sap, or ingestion of the plant, can cause photosensitivity in some people. Common side-effects are gastrointestinal disturbances, allergic reactions & fatigue. If used with drugs classed as serotonin reuptake inhibitors (fluoxetine: Prozac, paroxetine: Paxil) symptoms of serotonin syndrome may occur: mental confusion, hallucinations, agitation, headache, coma, shivering, sweating, fever, hypertension, tachycardia, nausea, diarrhea, tremors. St John's wort can reduce the effectiveness of prescription medicine including contraceptive pill, antidepressants, immune suppressants, HIV medications, warfarin, digoxin.

MEDICINAL USES: Analgesic, Antidepressant, Antiseptic, Antispasmodic, Aromatic, Astringent, Cholagogue, Digestive, Diuretic, Expectorant, Homeopathy, Nervine, Resolvent, Sedative, Stimulant, Vermifuge, Vulnerary,

St. John's wort has a long history of herbal use. It fell out of favor in the nineteenth century but recent research has brought it back to prominence as an extremely valuable remedy for nervous problems. In clinical trials about 67% of patients with mild to moderate depression improved when taking this plant. The flowers and leaves are analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, aromatic, astringent, cholagogue, digestive, diuretic, expectorant, nervine, resolvent, sedative, stimulant, vermifuge and vulnerary. The herb is used in treating a wide range of disorders, including pulmonary complaints, bladder problems, diarrhea and nervous depression. It is also very effectual in treating overnight incontinence of urine in children. Externally, it is used in poultices to dispel herd tumors, caked breasts, bruising etc.. The flowering shoots are harvested in early summer and dried for later use. Use the plant with caution and do not prescribe it for patients with chronic depression. The plant was used to procure an abortion by some native North Americans, so it is best not used by pregnant women. See also the notes above on toxicity. A tea or tincture of the fresh flowers is a popular treatment for external ulcers, burns, wounds (especially those with severed nerve tissue), sores, bruises, cramps etc.. An infusion of the flowers in olive oil is applied externally to wounds, sores, ulcers, swellings, rheumatism etc.. It is also valued in the treatment of sunburn and as a cosmetic preparation to the skin. The plant contains many biologically active compounds including rutin, pectin, choline, sitosterol, hypericin and pseudohypericin. These last two compounds have been shown to have potent anti-retroviral activity without serious side effects and they are being researched in the treatment of AIDS. A homeopathic remedy is made from the fresh whole flowering plant. It is used in the treatment of injuries, bites, stings etc., and is said to be the first remedy to consider when nerve-rich areas such as the spine, eyes, fingers etc., are injured.

Other Uses: Dye, Red, Yellow, Gold, Brown, Tannin

Red, Yellow, gold and brown dyes are obtained from the flowers and leaves. A red is obtained from the flowers after acidification. A red dye is obtained from the whole plant when infused in oil or alcohol. A yellow is obtained when it is infused in water. The plant is said to contain good quantities of tannin, though exact figures are not available.

The effects of intoxication can be variously described as depressant, sedative-hypnotic, dissociative, and deliriant; paradoxical effects may occur. Perceptual phenomena such as macropsia and micropsia may occur, which may have been the inspiration for the effect of mushroom-consumption in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.[88] Additionally, A. muscaria cannot be commercially cultivated, due to its mycorrhizal relationship with the roots of pine trees. However, following the outlawing of psilocybin mushrooms in the United Kingdom in 2006, the sale of the still legal A. muscaria began increasing. (Wikipedia)

she's peeing blood... I was up until about 3am, watching her litterbox habits.

I found a 24 hour vet (with advice nurse), but the on-call vet was only taking established patients, so I discussed symptoms with the nurse, and decided it was safe to wait 6 hours and go to the vet nearby at 9am.

My furry baby has a UTI, so the vet injected a sedative and painkiller, and gave me antibiotics, painkiller, and a muscle relaxant to feed Addy-lion twice a day. The vet also pointed out some ongoing-health things that HAD to have been there, but my previous vet didn't point out... my whole experience with this vet was MUCH more straightforward, so I'm probably going to make her my regular vet (she's much closer to home, too).

My wallet might be a bit slimmer, but I don't care, 'cause she's my little girl, I love her, and she's feeling a bit better now :)

And on a purely photographic note: I took about 6 pictures of myself the entire day... some of them were probably better than this from a technical standpoint, but I just loved something about this one... :)

At the height of my experimentation I had 6 drawers of different psychoactive botanicals running at once, plus a case for the bulky stuff. I’m not sure which are in each drawer specifically, but overall I sampled and documented the following (taken from the book’s contents page):

PSYCHEDELICS

Ayahuasca, Cebil, Chaliponga Leaves, Fly Agaric, HBWS, Iboga, Magic Mushrooms, Magic Truffles, Morning Glory Seeds, Ololiuqui, Salvia, Sananga, San Pedro Cactus, Sinicuichi, Syrian Rue, Yopo

STIMULANTS

Betel Nut, Coca, Ephedra, Ginseng, Green Tea, Guarana, Guayusa, Horny Goat Weed, Khaini, Kola Nut, Wormwood, Yerba Mate, Yohimbe

SEDATIVES

Blue Lotus [+Pink Lotus Flower +Red Lily], Cacao, Catnip, Chamomile, Damiana, Frankincense, Hops, Imphepho, Indian Warrior, Kanna, Lavender, Maconha Brava, Marihuanilla, Mullein, Mulungu, Passion Flower, Rhodiola, Saffron, St. John's Wort, Skullcap, Valerian Root, White Sage, Wild Dagga, Wild Lettuce

NOOTROPICS

Catuaba, Celastrus Paniculatus, Ginkgo

ONEIROGENS (DREAM HERBS)

Calea, Entada Rheedii, Mexican Tarragon, Mugwort, Ubulawu

DELIRIANTS

Datura, Nutmeg

UNCLASSIFIED

Cannabis, Kava Kava, Kratom, Mad Honey, Mapacho, Opium, Rapé, Sakae Naa, Tobacco.

As you would probably expect, many of these produced positive experiences; in fact some were astonishing in nature. Others however were relatively bland, with a few being truly horrendous, and indeed, traumatic.

Something I did learn early was that the need for a harm reduction process didn’t just apply to my chemical journey: due diligence and proper research are essential pre-requisites for all forms of psychoactive exploration. I burned myself too often. Stay Safe.

On The Use Of This Album

Warning: JARVIS should not be used as a sedative or an accompaniment to exercise.

You may sit if you wish - kneeling is really not necessary.

JARVIS can be broken into convenient bite-size pieces but probably works best when swallowed whole.

Do not adjust your tone control, it's meant to sound like that. It's not LoFi or HiFi - it's MyFi and hopefully YourFi, too.

A song isn't really a song until somebody hears it - so thanks for listening

Remember! As always, please do not read the words whilst listening to the recordings.

Habitat: dense macchia next to a dirt path; slightly inclined terrain, west aspect; sunny, warm, dry place; calcareous ground; partly protected from direct rain by canopies; average precipitations ~ 900-1000 mm/year, average temperature 13-15 deg C, elevations 100 m (340 feet), sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region.

Substratum: Dead Fraxinus ornus branch.

Place: West island Krk, west of village Brzac, Kvarner bay, Adriatic Sea, Croatia EC.

Comment: Parmotrema perlatum is a common lichen on island Krk. It prefers branches of Quercus sp. trees; however, the specimen photographed was found on Fraxinus ornus branches and twigs. It is a sensitive species to pollution hence it is much rarer in populated regions of industrialized countries and already regionally extinct in some parts of Europe. Its lobes are thin, very wavy, with abundant soralia and scarce black cilia at the margins. Underside is black with simple rhizines in the center and tan-colored and bare at margins. Apothecia are generally considered very rare; however, this was not the case for this observation. The species has been traditionally used for medical purposes in India as a diuretic and headache relief. It has proven sedative and antibiotic effects (Ref.5). Many specimens have been observed at the place of this observation. Pictures show the lichen in moist state (except picture 1. in dry state).

Brian Samuel Epstein (1934-1967).

Brian Epstein was managing the record section of his family's department store in Liverpool when he first saw the Beatles at The Cavern Club. After signing the band in January 1962 he changed their image from leather jackets and jeans to suits and ties. Despite several knockbacks he eventually persuaded EMI to sign the band. Other acts Epstein managed included Cilla Black, Gerry & The Pacemakers and Billy J Kramer & the Dakotas. He died in 1967 aged 32 as a result of an accidental overdose from a sedative.

Here lived James Maury 1746-1840 first United States Consul in Liverpool, 1790-1829.

Edible Parts: Flowers, Leaves, Oil, Pollen, Root; Seed, Stem,

Edible Uses: Vegetable, Salad, Flour, Starch, Protein, Asparagus, Syrup,

Roots - raw or cooked. They can be boiled and eaten like potatoes or macerated and then boiled to yield a sweet syrup. The roots can also be dried and ground into a powder, this powder is rich in protein and can be mixed with wheat flour and then used for making bread, biscuits, muffins etc.. One hectare of this plant can produce 8 tons of flour from the rootstock. The plant is best harvested from late autumn to early spring since it is richest in starch at this time. The root contains about 80% carbohydrate (30 - 46% starch) and 6 - 8% protein. Young shoots in spring - raw or cooked. An asparagus substitute. They taste like cucumber. The shoots can still be used when they are up to 50cm long. Base of mature stem - raw or cooked. It is best to remove the outer part of the stem. It is called 'Cossack asparagus'. Immature flowering spike - raw, cooked or made into a soup. It tastes like sweet corn. Seed - raw or cooked. The seed is rather small and tedious to utilize, but has a pleasant nutty taste when roasted. The seed can be ground into a flour and used in making cakes etc.. An edible oil is obtained from the seed. Due to the small size of the seed this is probably not a very worthwhile crop. Pollen - raw or cooked. The pollen can be used as a protein rich additive to flour when making bread, porridge etc.. It can also be eaten with the young flowers, which makes it considerably easier to utilize. The pollen can be harvested by placing the flowering stem over a wide but shallow container and then gently tapping the stem and brushing the pollen off with a fine brush. This will help to pollinate the plant and thereby ensure that both pollen and seeds can be harvested.

MEDICINAL USES: Anticoagulant, Astringent, Diuretic, Emmenagogue, Galactogogue, Hemostatic, Miscellany, Refrigerant, Sedative, Tonic, Vulnerary,

The leaves are diuretic. The leaves have been mixed with oil and used as a poultice on sores. The pollen is astringent, diuretic, emmenagogue, hemostatic, refrigerant, sedative, suppurative and vulnerary. The dried pollen is said to be anticoagulant, but when roasted with charcoal it becomes hemostatic. It is used internally in the treatment of kidney stones, hemorrhage, painful menstruation, abnormal uterine bleeding, post-partum pains, abscesses and cancer of the lymphatic system. It should not be prescribed for pregnant women. Externally, it is used in the treatment of tapeworms, diarrhea and injuries. A decoction of the stems has been used in the treatment of whooping cough. The roots are diuretic, galactogogue, refrigerant and tonic. The roots are pounded into a jelly-like consistency and applied as a poultice to wounds, cuts, boils, sores, carbuncles, inflammations, burns and scalds. The flowers are used in the treatment of a wide range of ailments including abdominal pain, amenorrhea, cystitis, dysuria, metrorrhagia and vaginitis. The young flower heads are eaten as a treatment for diarrhea. The seed down has been used as a dressing on burns and scalds.

OTHER USES: Baby care, Biomass, Fiber, Insulation, Lighting, Miscellany, Oil, Paper, Soil stabilization, Stuffing, Thatching, Tinder, Weaving

The stems and leaves have many uses. Gathered in the autumn they make a good thatch, can be used in making paper, can be woven into mats, chairs, hats etc.. They are a good source of biomass, making an excellent addition to the compost heap or used as a source of fuel etc. The pulp of the plant can be converted into rayon. The stems can be used to make rush lights. The outer stem is removed except for a small strip about 10mm wide which acts as a spine to keep the stem erect. The stem is then soaked in oil and can be lit and used like a candle. The female flowers make an excellent tinder and can be lit from the spark of a flint. A fiber is obtained from the blossom stem and flowers. A fiber obtained from the leaves can be used for making paper The leaves are harvested in summer, autumn or winter and are soaked in water for 24 hours prior to cooking. The fibers are cooked for 2 hours with soda ash and then beaten in a ball mill for 1½ hours. They make a green or brown paper. The hairs of the fruits are used for stuffing pillows etc.. They have good insulating and buoyancy properties and have also been used as a wound dressing and a lining for babies diapers. The flowering stems can be dried and used for insulation, they also have good buoyancy properties. The pollen is highly flammable, it is used in making fireworks etc..

Passiflora incarnata is commonly known as maypop, purple passionflower, true passionflower, wild apricot, and wild passion vine. It is a fast growing perennial vine with climbing or trailing stems. A member of the passionflower genus Passiflora, the maypop has large, intricate flowers with prominent styles and stamens. One of the hardiest species of passionflower, it is a common wildflower in the southern United States.

Flowers have five bluish-white petals with a white and purple corona, a structure of fine appendages between the petals and stamens. The large flower is typically arranged in a ring above the petals and sepals. They are pollinated by insects such as bumblebees and carpenter bees, and are self-sterile. The flower normally blooms in July. The stems can be smooth or fuzzy. They are long and trailing, with many tendrils. Leaves are alternate and palmately 3-lobed and occasionally 5-lobed. They have two characteristic glands at the base of the blade on the petiole.

The fleshy fruit, also referred to as a maypop, is an oval yellowish berry about the size of a hen egg; it is green at first, but then becomes orange as it matures. As with other passifloras, it is the larval food of a number of butterfly species, including the Zebra longwing and Gulf fritillary. And its fruit is very popular with wildlife.

Traditionally, the fresh or dried whole plant has been used as a herbal medicine to treat nervous anxiety and insomnia. A small clinical study suggested that in the form of a tea it may improve the subjective quality of sleep. The dried, ground herb is frequently used in Europe by drinking a teaspoon of it in tea. A sedative chewing gum has even been produced. In cooking, the fruit of this variety is sometimes used for jam and jellies. The fruit can be eaten out of hand and historically was a favorite of colonial settlers of the South and Native Americans alike.

The maypop occurs in thickets, disturbed areas, near riverbanks, and near unmowed pastures, roadsides, and railroads. It thrives in areas with lots of available sunlight.

Comment: Valeriana is a large and interesting genus with about 250 species known worldwide (Ref.:3). Twelve of them are growing in Slovenia. Some of them are widely known and used as medical herbs with sedative effects (actually roots are usually used). While determination of those species, which grow high in the Slovenian mountains, from the smallest, very beautiful Valeriana supina, to medium size ones, like Valeriana montana, Valeriana tripteris, Valeriana saxatilis and Valeriana elongata is easy, those growing predominantly at lower elevations pose a much harder problem. They are usually grouped under the name Variana officinalis agg. The plants are highly variable and in literature taxonomically treated on different ways and under different names. For a more or less reliable determination one has to check presence of above- and/or underground stolons, hairs on different parts of the plant, number of leaflet pairs of stem leaves, the shape of the end leaflet of the leaves compared to side leaflets, size of stomata (pores in leaf surface, which allow gas exchange) on underside of middle stem leaves, etc.

The plants photographed are most probably Valeriana collina. They have almost all traits conform to the description of this species according to Ref: 1. and 2. - thin underground stolons, height of plants from 35 to 100 cm (measured from 55 to 90 cm), stomata between 27-35 μm long (measured average was 29 μm), proper shape and number of leaflets of the leaves and dry, calcareous habitat. However, the stem should be densely hairy, but it is, albeit markedly, rather sparsely hairy. Also leaf shape shown in Ref. 3 doesn't fit to the plants photographed. There were twenty or so flowering stalks at the place.

Marion Davies (1897-1961) was one of the great comedic actresses of the silent era. She starred in nearly four dozen films between 1917 and 1937.

Marion Davies was born Marion Cecelia Douras in the borough of Brooklyn, New York in 1897. She had been bitten by the show biz bug early as she watched her sisters perform in local stage productions. She wanted to do the same. As Marion got older, she tried out for various school plays and did fairly well. Once her formal education had ended, Marion began her career as a chorus girl in New York City, first in the Pony Follies and eventually in the famous Ziegfeld Follies. Her stage name came when she and her family passed the Davies Insurance Building. One of her sisters called out "Davies!!! That shall be my stage name," and the whole family took on that name. Marion wanted more than to dance. Acting, to her, was the epitome of show business and she aimed her sights in that direction. She had met newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and went to live with him at his San Simeon castle. They stayed together for over 30 years, while Hearst’s wife Millicent resided in New York. Millicent would not grant him a divorce so that he could marry Davies. San Simeon is a spectacular and elaborate mansion, which now stands as a California landmark. At San Simeon, the couple threw elaborate parties, which were frequented by all of the top names in Hollywood and other celebrities including the mayor of New York City, President Calvin Coolidge and Charles Lindbergh. When she was 20, Marion made her first film, Runaway Romany (George W. Lederer, 1917). Written by Marion and directed by her brother-in-law, the film wasn't exactly a box-office smash, but for Marion, it was a start and a stepping stone to bigger things. The following year Marion starred in The Burden of Proof (John G. Adolfi, Julius Steger, 1918) and Cecilia of the Pink Roses (Julius Steger, 1918). The latter film was backed by Hearst. Because of Hearst's newspaper empire, Marion would be promoted as no actress before her. She appeared in numerous films over the next few years, including the superior comedy Getting Mary Married (Allan Dwan, 1919) with Norman Kerry, the suspenseful The Cinema Murder (George D. Baker, 1919) and the drama The Restless Sex (Leon D'Usseau, Robert Z. Leonard, 1920) with Carlyle Blackwell.

In 1922, Marion Davies appeared as Mary Tudor in the historical romantic epic, When Knighthood Was in Flower (Robert G. Vignola, 1922). It was a film into which Hearst poured millions of dollars as a showcase for her. Although Marion didn't normally appear in period pieces, she turned in a wonderful performance and the film became a box office hit. Marion remained busy, one of the staples in movie houses around the country. At the end of the twenties, it was obvious that sound films were about to replace silent films. Marion was nervous because she had a stutter when she became excited and worried she wouldn't make a successful transition to the new medium, but she was a true professional who had no problem with the change. Time after time, film after film, Marion turned in masterful performances. Her best films were the comedies The Patsy (1928) also with Marie Dressler, and Show People (1929) with William Haines, both directed by King Vidor. In 1930, two of her better films were Not So Dumb (King Vidor, 1930) and The Florodora Girl (Harry Beaumont, 1930), with Lawrence Grant. By the early 1930s, Marion had lost her box office appeal and the downward slide began. Hearst tried to push MGM executives to hire Marion for the role of Elizabeth Barrett in The Barretts of Wimpole Street (Sidney Franklin, 1934). Louis B. Mayer had other ideas and hired producer Irving Thalberg's wife Norma Shearer instead. Hearst reacted by pulling his newspaper support for MGM without much impact. By the late 1930s Hearst was suffering financial reversals and it was Marion who bailed him out by selling off $1 million of her jewelry. Hearst's financial problems also spelt the end of her career. Although she had made the transition to sound, other stars fared better and her roles became fewer and further between. In 1937, a 40-year-old Marion filmed her last movie, Ever Since Eve (Lloyd Bacon, 1937) with Robert Montgomery. Out of films and with the intense pressures of her relationship with Hearst, Marion turned more and more to alcohol. Despite those problems, Marion was a very sharp and savvy businesswoman. When Hearst lay dying in 1951 at age 88, Davies was given a sedative by his lawyer. When she awoke several hours later, she discovered that Hearst had passed away and that his associates had removed his body as well as all his belongings and any trace that he had lived there with her. His family had a big formal funeral for him in San Francisco, from which she was banned. Later, Marion married for the first time at the age of 54, to Horace Brown. The union would last until she died of cancer in 1961 in Los Angeles, California. She was 64 years old. Upon Marion’s niece Patricia Van Cleve Lake's death, it was revealed she had been the love child of Davies and Hearst. The love affair of Marion Davies and William Randolph Hearst was mirrored in the films Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941), RKO 281 (Benjamin Ross, 1999), and The Cat's Meow (Peter Bogdanovich, 2001). In Citizen Kane (1941), the title character's second wife (played by Dorothy Comingore—an untalented singer whom he tries to promote—was widely assumed to be based on Davies. But many commentators, including Citizen Kane writer/director Orson Welles himself, have defended Davies' record as a gifted actress, to whom Hearst's patronage did more harm than good.

And, please check out our blog European Film Star Postcards.

Saturday was a big day for our little Kiska - a blood sample (to test her rabies antibodies), and the 'fitting' of an identification chip.

She's not really a frequent visitor to the vet, but has been a few times, and has never been upset or worried.

Alas this time was not so smooth - she got spooked by something, and ended up being a wild tiger - ears back, teeth on full display and lots of hissing.

The vet and her assistant were great though, and with the help of masses of patience, and a small injection of a sedative, we got the blood sample taken, and the chip fitted - that's what is being done in the photo.

And after a bit of limping and wobbling around when she got home, she's now back to normal; rampaging around the house like a small wild tiger, but without the hissing :)

Edible Parts: Leaves,

Edible Uses: Potherb,

Leaves - cooked. This plant is in a family that contains many poisonous plants so some caution is advised in using it.

CAUTION: No records of toxicity have been seen but this species belongs to a family that contains many poisonous plants. Some caution is therefore advised.

MEDICINAL USES: Anodyne, Antianxiety, Antidepressant, Antispasmodic, Diaphoretic, Diuretic, Galactofuge, Odontalgic

The Eco-terrorist a faction that wants to turn back time several centuries uses only weapons from aprox. Before the turn of the second millennium…

Many of their guns the build themselves, other they buy at antique markets or at Harry’s secondhand shop at an asteroid in a near earth orbit… but to buy stuff even they need kredits and to get them they sell tech they pillage in their raids and heists…

So however much they hate present day tech, they are also selling tech to shady dealers like these lorry drivers…

- (Eco soldier) So we will throw in this stupid human wearing spandex for free, we tried to brainwash him but he cannot be reused in our cause, he is jabbing on about modern espresso makers so he is of no use at all, the only coffee we drink is antique finds from ancient civilizations… we would have snuffed him, but why waste a bullet on his thick head, but he is so thick this bonehead that I fear one bullet would not be enough!!!

- (Lorry scum) Yeah We’ll take him, his suit is some kind of antique super villain something, called arachno-man or something, if we can remove it from him I know a collector that would pay more for that than the butt-ugly Mr. Brown inhabiting it…

- (Eco Soldier) You are a good man Mr. Fisch, can I convince you to join our cause? I mean you would have to amputate your robotic arms, but our medic could do that in a giffy and he could graft you with two shiny hooks…

- (Lorry scum) Ok here is at the very least 34.000 Kreds in this box, have you given the human enough sedatives so he won’t wake all of the undercity up when we drive it to port 9?

- (Eco Soldier) yes Doc injected him with enough sedatives when he tried to brainwash him that he will stay silent for a month, just don’t forget to change his diaper!

- (Lorry Scum) great doing business with you, same place next week, I hope you will get some more axis and cogs then, this catch was a bit meager… ok I am off, must pay the police before I head home, my wife gets so cranky when the sheriff knock on the door for his bribe in the middle of the dinner! Ciao!

Wild plants found growing at Wingate Quarry Local Nature Reserve, Co. Durham.

Found in Europe, including Britain but absent from the extreme north, to temperate Asia. Primula veris is a PERENNIAL growing to 0.3 m (1ft) by 0.2 m (0ft 8in). It is hardy to zone 5 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from Apr to May, and the seeds ripen from Jul to August. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees, lepidoptera. The plant is self-fertile.

Young leaves - raw or cooked in soups etc., They are not that tasty, but are available in late winter which adds somewhat to their value. The fresh or dried leaves are used as a tea substitute. Flowers - raw, cooked or used in conserves, as a garnish etc. They make an ornamental addition to the salad bowl. This species has become much less common in the past 100 years due to habitat destruction, over-collecting from the wild and farming practices. When it was more abundant, the flowers were harvested in quantity in the spring and used to make a tasty wine with sedative and nervine properties. A related species Primula elatior is listed by the Council of Europe as a natural food flavouring.

Cowslips are an underused but valuable medicinal herb. They have a very long history of medicinal use and have been particularly employed in treating conditions involving spasms, cramps, paralysis and rheumatic pains. The plant contains saponins, which have an expectorant effect, and salicylates which are the main ingredient of aspirin and have anodyne, anti-inflammatory and febrifuge effects. This remedy should not be prescribed for pregnant women, patients who are sensitive to aspirin, or those taking anti-coagulant drugs such as warfarin. The flowers and the leaves are anodyne, diaphoretic, diuretic and expectorant. They are harvested in the spring and can be used fresh or dried. The yellow corolla of the flower is antispasmodic and sedative. They are recommended for treating over-activity and sleeplessness, especially in children. They are potentially valuable in the treatment of asthma and other allergic conditions. At one time an oil was produced by maceration of the flowers, this has an antiecchymotic effect (treats bruising). The root contains 5 - 10% triterpenoid saponins which are strongly expectorant, stimulating a more liquid mucous and so easing the clearance of phlegm. It has been dried and made into a powder then used as a sternutatory. The root is also mildly diuretic, antirheumatic and slows the clotting of blood. It is used in the treatment of chronic coughs (especially those associated with chronic bronchitis and catarrhal congestion), flu and other febrile conditions. The root can be harvested in the spring or autumn and is dried for later use. The leaves have similar medicinal properties to the roots but are weaker in action. A homeopathic remedy is made from the plant. It is used in the treatment of kidney complaints and catarrh. The German Commission Monographs, a therapeutic guide to herbal medicine, approve Primula veris for cough/bronchitis for critics of commission.

Overall, I consider myself to have been a very fortunate person throughout my life. Sixty-five years into it, I still marvel at my life’s luck. However, growing up, I thought I was the unluckiest person ever born; kids play games of chance, with cards, dice and other random actions, I discovered early on that I was a continual loser in those games. But, when it comes to the important things, I have been exceedingly fortunate.

Case in point, ten days ago it was discovered that I had a “significant” blockage in my “Widow-Maker” artery. My cardiologist acted quickly, he knew it was just a matter of time before a probable fatal heart attack occurred, and a heart catheterization proceedure was scheduled a few days later to determine what the next steps should be. While the procedure confirmed the arterial blockage, it also revealed that that the rest of the heart’s blood carrying vessels were fine within normal characteristics for someone my age. Some balloon inflations expanded the affected arteries (complicated because a connecting branch also had blockage) and then a stent was placed into the artery to hold it open going forward. Linda reminded me that my cardiologist said that if I had a heart attacked, it would likely have been fatal. One week later, I seem to be doing fine. If you want to know more about how lucky I was to have found out in advance, read on.

Essentially, I was alerted to my failing arteries because of my regular exercise routine. I retired two years ago and about 4-5 months into retirement, I decided I needed some physical activity and began walking. Since it was in the summer, I walked the neighborhood and it was easy to get a good workout walking the hills here. When winter came, I rescued my old treadmill from the basement and began using it instead as it is problematic walking outdoors in winter. I kept a regimen of walking three times a week for over a year and never had any problem physically with doing it.

However, in the fall of the 2019, that regimen was interrupted by several things. November brings Thanksgiving and a time to be very bad in my ingestion choices. Travel to Wisconsin to see my football team was early December and then house guests for 3+ weeks during late December, early January. All this was followed by one more trip for a playoff game to Wisconsin. During this 5-6-week period, I ingested the worst items possible into my system and thought nothing of it. I also gained 7-8 pounds during my period of inactivity.

Now into mid-January, I get back on my treadmill and begin my first workout in way too long. Normally, my walks are 45 minutes at a good pace and at an incline that causes me to perspire heavily. Following the that 45 minutes, I would go another 5-7 minutes in cool down mode. However, this day, I was struggling as I reached the 40-minute mark; my legs seemed tired and I seemed to be breathing harder than usual. I cut the workout short by about 5 minutes and thought nothing of it as I thought I was paying the price for gaining weight and not walking hard for weeks. Two days later, I get back on the treadmill and start my usual routine. Same thing happens as last time, but this time seems to be worse and again I cut my workout short. At this point, I was cautious and curious as to what was going on. I waited the weekend and got on the treadmill again on Monday. The same dead legs and gasping for breath seemed not any better but not necessarily worse.

I waited two more days and tried one more time. This time, it hit me hard and I ended my workout after only 12 minutes. I was pretty convinced there was something definitely wrong. I immediately called my cardiologist, already having an appointment in mid-February, moved it up to the following Tuesday. After that visit to the cardiologist, he scheduled me for a nuclear-stress test for the next Tuesday..

I have never been a good test taker and Friday’s test was no exception. I failed miserably! They hopped me up on some good Technetium dye and put me on the treadmill. Only 8 minutes in, I was struggling to keep up and draw breath. I never reached the target heart rate and I didn’t even tell the technicians, I bailed from the treadmill as I was not sure I was going to stay conscious. If I wasn’t gasping for oxygen so hard, I would have thought about how humbling an experience this was; like being in gym class and failing at rope climbing, in front of everyone.

Pictures taken immediately following revealed there was a blockage on the left side; my cardiologist used the word “significant” when he described it to me. As noted above, a heart catheterization procedure was scheduled for Friday, February 7.

The catheterization procedure was an odd one, I was conscious the entire time; they did give me a sedative to help me relax but I was never all that nervous in the first place. Linda and I were told the procedure would take about an hour. They insert a snake up your femoral artery and proceed to check things out. I felt the pinch as they opened up the artery but then not two minutes later it seems, my doctor looks back at me and says something like, “We are already up to your heart, pretty cool huh?”. I felt none of that activity, cool but strange. After what seemed like a reasonable time, my doctor tells me several things. First, all my other arteries look good (he even showed them to me on a monitor) but I have a blockage that needs a stent. The first part of this good news, it means I won’t probably require bypass surgery; the stent, well I guess I get something to set off metal detectors in the airport. Second, he needs the help of another doctor to complete the stent insertion and we have to wait for him to become available which could be, he says half an hour.

We wait… I have no idea how long we wait but it is much longer that a half hour. Finally, mystery doctor shows up and they start doing stuff. I have no idea what they talking about but it is like I am in a fitting room and they are trying various ruby slippers on me. That snake went in and out a lot. I was told that they needed to inflate two balloons simultaneously in different branches to clear some of the blockage. I also noted that I definitely felt some pressure in my chest as they were working up there; I imagined that they were inflating the balloon when I felt this pressure.

While all this was going on, my bladder is about to explode. Eventually, the nurse helped me relieve that problem; sorry Rae. Finally, finished, stent in place the entire elapsed time about 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Linda met me back at the recovery area. Since I received a stent, I would be kept overnight in ICU for observation. My overnight stay was uneventful other than being annoying. I couldn’t sleep because the monitors would go off all time. There is also a lot of activity going on in the ICU all night too, which also does not promote the concept of sleep. I suspect I got about 2 hours continuous sleep during the night. We were released from ICU after seeing my doctor and were on our way home about 2 p.m. Linda stopped at the pharmacy to acquire my new medications, a blood thinner and a cholesterol drug (two smallish pink pills) and we settled in at home. No sooner did I plunk on the couch after dinner, I was out. I slept from 6:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., which is just an unheard-of long time for me!

That was my heart tale, somehow appropriate since I write this on Valentine’s day. If you got this far, you might say I was lucky to have discovered there was a problem before something more serious happened and you would be right. However, there is more to the luck than just that. I have always half-joked that I would die while clearing my driveway of snow; note said driveway is long and steep. Other than a sprinkle of snow in the fall, we have had no snow here in January or February. If we had before finding this issue, I indeed may not have survived. My football team losing ugly in the playoffs, now that broke my heart figuratively but maybe could have been worse if it was a close game; funny saying that now makes me chuckle. In any event, by writing this all down helps and reminds me that I am still here!

Rosaceae: A small deciduous tree to 17m. Found in limestone areas, by streams and in damp woods and hedgerows. The white flowers open the after the leaves and grow into spikes some 15cm long, appearing in May. The flowers are followed by shiny black fruits up to 8mm, these are sour-tasting and look a bit like sloes. Widespread in the UK. Native to most of Europe, including Britain, from Scandinavia south and east to Spain, Siberia and the Himalayas.

The fruit can be used raw or cooked, because of the bitter taste they are used mainly for making jam and preserves. The fruit is about the size of a pea and contains one large seed. The young leaves can be cooked, they are used as a boiled vegetable in Korea. An herbal tea can also be made from the bark.

The bark has mildly anodyne, diuretic, febrifuge and sedative properties. An infusion is used in the treatment of colds, feverish conditions. The bark is harvested when the tree is in flower and can be dried for later use.

Many people have a fear of going to the dentist. Unfortunately, putting off important cleanings and exams can end up causing more dental problems, increasing those fears and compounding the problem. Fortunately, sedation dentistry in Florida can help.

Just about everyone has some anxiety when going to the dentist, but for certain people, the thought is literally terrifying. But putting off dental care often results in a painful problems as well as an unattractive smile. A caring dentist like you’ll find at Stuart Dental Spa, combined with sedation dentistry, is often the best solution to ensure good oral health.

Sedation dentistry in Florida can benefit patients who not only have high anxiety and fear of going to the dentist, it can also be a good option for patients who have physical limitations like back and neck problems, difficulty becoming numb with local anesthesia, extensive treatment needs, a severe gag reflex or other issues.

This option can even provide a practically anxiety-free experience, allowing those with fears to feel safe and comfortable, through a calm, peaceful environment combined with sedatives or other pharmacological agents to help relax the nervous system.

Remember that by putting off regular exams and cleaning, plaque inevitably builds up; the bacteria in plaque produces toxins that can irritate the gums, eventually causing inflammation which can affect the entire body, often resulting in other health issues. Gum disease is also the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, making regular dental exams and cleanings a must.

If you fear dental appointments and tend to put off keeping your teeth and mouth healthy, calling your South Florida dentist, like Dr. Rita Medwid, can get the ball rolling to determine if sedation dentistry in Florida is right for you. If you are a good candidate, the dentist will then select an appropriate sedative or anti-anxiety medication for you to take at a particular time before your appointment. These widely-prescribed medications are known to ease anxiety and help patients relax – so that you can enjoy a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile without the undue stress.

The ethereal appearance of the Indian Pipe with its pallid, bract-covered stem topped by a nodding, equally white flower makes it perhaps the most readily identifiable wildflower. It has earned many metaphorical sobriquets that range from 'Death Plant' to 'Fairy Smoke' to acknowledge this notoriety. It is cool to the touch and is sometimes called 'Ice Plant.' It decomposes into a black, gelatinous mass and is accorded that macabre 'Corpse Plant' for this characteristic.

After pollination, the flower extends upward in a 'mono - tropa' or 'one-turning,' the possible basis of the generic name. The seeds are dispensed from this erect posture and must germinate in an area within the purview of the requisite fungus of the Russula family. Therefore, they are rarely spread beyond the immediate vicinity of the parent plant. One typically sees Indian Pipe in epigeal dense clusters directly over the hypogeal Russula fungal mycelium that permeates the rooted soil.

The Indian Pipe did not escape the notice of the Native Americans who used its stem juices in the preparation of a treatment for sore or inflamed eyes (whence the name 'Eyebright'), as a topical application for warts and bunions, and to ameliorate general aches and pains. The early colonists adopted these practices and extended them to the use of the powdered root in the treatment of a variety of ailments, notably Saint Vitus' Dance or chorea, a nervous condition characterized by irregular, jerking movements. The common names 'Fit Root' and 'Convulsion Root' are vestiges of this practice. Physicians at one time administered a tonic that was used as a general sedative for any nervous or restless condition. It is not known if any of these treatments were anything more than a placebo; modern medicinal plant guides generally warn of possible toxicity due to the presence of glycosides.

Indian Pipe is seen as either satanic and angelic according to individual perceptions. Nellie Blanchan de Graff, a noted nature writer and scientific historian of the late nineteenth century, offered the opinion that " … no wonder it grows black with shame on being picked, as if its wickedness was just being discovered." In contrast, Mary Higgenson, the second wife of the noted Massachusetts abolitionist Thomas Wentworth Higgenson who commanded the first regiment of freed slaves in the Civil War, thought so much of the plant that she wrote the poem "Ghost Flowers" in tribute. The flowers are metaphor to a 'spotless sisterhood' engaged in their 'shy devotions near the singing brook' whose 'heads are bent, as if in prayerful mood." Whether considered foul or fait, Monotropa uniflora ranks as one of the true wonders of the forest world. www.sierrapotomac.org/W_Needham/Indian_Pipe_100405.htm

"Hope is the pillar that holds up the world. Hope is the dream of a waking man." - Pliny The Elder.

what else do we have really? Hope is like the sedative of daily life's pain.

but you dont wanna run out of Hope, it won't be so cool! :)

Dazy drops the paper sack, it lays by her left side.

River Grau wanders over, a grin forming on his lips as he spots Lithia. He wiggles, arms stretching out towards her. "Miss Lithia!" A blink, and then his expression turning puzzled as he notices the unconcious girls on the floor.

Lithia Nightfire walks forward, picking up the girl in red like she was a doll, flinging her over her shoulder if allowed. "I will bring this one to the lab. Do you require assistance with the second one? I can call Mister Wylder..." She asks, not notcing the child behind them yet.

tempestual Parkin grins at lithia, her toe darting out to nudge at the downed pink hybrid, checking she is truly unconcious. "well......that went surprisingly smoothly. Can you carry them do you think? Heavy lifting isnt really something i can do." Stopping, fingers would idly brush down both forms, checking for weapons, scooping up the brown bag as she does so. A fiendish smirk of amusement grows as she considers a new plan. "i can drag.....but not carry, maybe we should make that call?"

Dazy is out like a euthanized house-cat. She has no weapons on her other than her retractable metal claws. They are a wrist brace, and the brace itself is made of leather. The leather can be cut, but the knots are tied HARD as they rarely come off. There is a button trigger on the inside of the brace by the wrist, that would send 8 inch metal claws out.

Bailey Longcloth is totally unconcious, no weapons on her. She'd be a floppy ragdoll if picked up.

Lithia Nightfire pauses as she was walking towards the other girl to look back at River. "River? What are you doing here?" she asked, feeling a bit confused at the moment. She looks to Temp "Mister Wylder is on his way here to assist with the pink one." She looks back to River, holding the girl over her shoulder with ease for now.

tempestual Parkin hovers slightly, uncertain at the odd bracers, they seemed to be nothing more than spiked at first glance. Shrugging slightly, she knew alex would most certainly do a more thorough check than she ever could. Besides.....there was enough sedative in those two to knock out a rhino for a day. Waiting idly, her eyes would dart around the alley, looking for anyone eavesdropping or spting on the scene. Idly re-lading her pistol, a clip of hallucinogens is pressed into place, ready if neccessary to put down the child without violence if possible.

River Grau recognized the teacher from the school, his head tilting. "Uhm.. I'm here 'cause I walked from there," A finger pointing to the doorway into the allies, "To here." It was straightforward enough. His head darting to the other woman, the one he didn't know or recognize. He hears and sees her reload the pistol and he ducks behind the dumpster. "Don't let her shoot me! I ain't do nothin'!" He hisses out.

tempestual Parkin merely raises her eyebrows, settling the pistol back into its holster "shoot you? whoever said anything about that? never leave a pistol unloaded is all." Turning then to alex, she would nod to the downed pink hybrid, clearly insisting upon urgency ,trusting lithi to make sure the kid wouldnt talk about this.

Alejandro Wylder arrived into the alley looking and assessing the scene swiftly. Noding to Temp he moves quickly yet cautiously toward the collapsed pink hybrid, holstering his pistol. With no word he picks her up and puts her over his shouldrs in a fire man's carry and walks behind Temp with her.

Lithia Nightfire turns to River, then catches Alex and Kia fromr the corner of her eye. "Miss Silvers.. would you be so kind to help River here? He is a friend, and I do not want him 'confused' by this..." She nods to River before stepping off behind Alex and Temp towards the lab, as the urgency to leave eas greater than calming him down for now. Perhaps Kia would get her tone when she made her request.

Dazy is tossed like a rag-doll over Alex's shoulders. Her head bobs with his strut.

tempestual Parkin proceeds back to the lab, trusting lithia to follow after, after settling the child. REaching the door, she would slap the control panel, figuring that is as likely to open it as anything with it malfunctioning. Smiling then to alex, a soft purr would show her satisfaction "standard processing procedure please alex, stripped of weapons and into a cell please.....they'll be unconcious for a good long time yet, dont worry."

Solidarity with Sonja and Christian!

After 33 years in French exile, Sonja Suder, 79, and Christian Gauger, 70, were extradited to Germany on September 14, 2011. Christian was transported across the border in an ambulance! Sonja was jailed in Frankfurt-Preungesheim; Christian in a prison hospital. Christian, who suffered cardiac arrest in October of 1997 and has since been under constant medical and personal care, wasn’t released from detention until one month after his extradition; he now is forced to report to the cops twice per week. Sonja, who continues to be detained in Preungesheim, is likely the oldest woman in Europe awaiting trial in jail. Prosecutors brought charges in November and are planning to bring the cases to trial in 2012.

A Long Tradition of Resistance

As part of the political left, the Revolutionaere Zellen (Revolutionary Cells, RZ) started tackling the revolutionary perspective in the BRD in 1973, striving to identify novel formats of militancy and starting points for resistance. It formed a third urban guerilla group, next to RAF and Bewegung 2. Juni (2nd June Movement); however, RZ opted against a vanguard position, choosing to act from within the legal left movement instead. In the mid-1970s, RZ spawned a feminist organization, Rote Zora. RZ and Rote Zora ceased action in the early 1990s.

Sonja and Christian are charged with two of roughly a dozen anti-nuclear attacks conducted by RZ. The first, on August 22, 1977, was directed against the German MAN corporation and its aid in the development of South African nuclear bombs. MAN was selling compressors for an uranium enrichment plant to the racist Apartheid regime. The second attack, conducted shortly thereafter, was directed against the KSB corporation, then the world’s leading manufacturer of cooling circuit pumps for nuclear power plants. Sonja and Christian are also blamed for an RZ arson attack against Heidelberg castle on May 18, 1978. The goal of the attack was to illuminate the contradiction between the chic tourist façade of Heidelberg and the policy of razing entire sectors of town in the interest of profiteers.

Fabricated Testimony

Regarding all three charges, the prosecution relies on the so-called “testimony” of Hermann F., testimony fabricated under conditions akin to torture. In the summer of 1978, an explosive device purportedly destined for an RZ action against the consulate of Argentina’s military dictatorship in Munich, had detonated on Hermann’s knees, causing severe injuries. He survived, but lost his eyes, both legs and suffered severe burns. Under the influence of potent pain killers and sedatives, he was hospitalized and later brought to police barracks, where he was held under total isolation. State security officers, prosecutors and judges who took copious notes were his sole “persons of contact.” Hermann remained in a state of absolute helplessness and reduced perception for 18 weeks. Contacts with friends and a trusted lawyer were prevented and manipulated. When he finally escaped isolation, Hermann F. rejected his purported testimony as construed and not his own.

33 Years of Exile

In the fall of 1978, one year after the “German Autumn” and in the midst of a state hunt for radical leftists, Sonja and Christian notice that they are being followed. They travel abroad, to an unknown destination. It isn’t until later that they learn of the accusations raised against them.

In 2000, 22 years after their disappearance, Sonja and Christian are arrested in Paris. In the meantime, another charge has been added: After 24 years, government witness Hans Joachim Klein has suddenly claimed to remember that Sonja transported weapons to Vienna in 1975, for an attack by a Palestinian-German commando against the OPEC oil minister conference. (Klein participated in the attack, but soon took his distance from it and them; aided by German Greens and former leftists, and with the knowledge of the German secret service, he lived in France until 1999. After his politically forced arrest, followed by copious testimony, he was convicted in 2000 in Frankfurt, but soon released and pardoned. Frankfurt district court rejected Klein’s testimony against Sonja and others as not credible during his trial in 2000: and yet, his claims are still being repeated in the recent warrant and charges against her.)

Those German accusations notwithstanding, a French court rejected the German extradition request in 2000. After posting bail of a few hundred Euros, both were allowed to remain in France. But in 2007, prodded by the Paris representative of the German federal criminal police BKA, German prosecutors took advantage of recent changes in EU law to submit a “European” arrest warrant. Though the warrant contain no new information, simply representing a change in format, the French authorities under Sarkozy agree to it in 2010.

No Deal. No Testimony.

Sonja and Christian come from the Left of the 1960s and 1970s; they were fighting the systems of prison and repression back then. Ten years ago, they refused to take a deal offered by the German prosecution, which promised respite from custody and parole in exchange for their voluntary return to Germany and a confession. They have consistently refused to testify. Sonja said, in a 2010 interview: “If you have agreed beforehand, ‘should something happen, no word, no testimony,’ then you feel very secure.”

Their life demonstrates that it was and remains possible to live without a bourgeois career and without adapting to the ruling system. They are 1968ers that did not morph into Greens, opportunists or power-hungry politicians. Activists of the Left do not need to sacrifice their political and personal integrity to so-called practical constraints. Sonja and Christian’s extradition and trial have been so doggedly pursued for only one reason: because they refuse to cooperate with the state security apparatus.

The Real Crime

All political trials aim at redefining legitimate resistance as criminal acts. The real crime here, however, was arming a racist regime, not the militant resistance against it; the real crime was and is the destruction of livable and affordable neighborhoods, not the protest against gentrification; the real crime was and is the nuclear program, not anti-nuclear resistance.

While the BRD government keeps supporting nuclear exports of German firms, and while no corporation has been taken to task for its support of the Apartheid regime, Sonja and Christian are to be tried based on acts against those crimes after three decades. They weren’t imprisoned until EU law had been tightened to the detriment of refugees and asylum seekers.

Freedom and happiness for Sonja and Christian!

Their steadfast attitude despite Christian’s severe illness and despite three decades of exile deserves respect and international solidarity from all those who have resisted and are resisting prison, the state security justice system, the nuclear mafia, racism and gentrification. It is no coincidence that, on the occasion of Castor 2011 in the Wendland, banners and fliers underlined the long tradition of anti-nuclear resistance since the 1970s and called for solidarity with Sonja and Christian.

Sonja and Christian should receive international support – let’s make sure that they don’t feel extradited!

Some detail of the creature's head. The reason for the pin-sizes eyes it threefold: first of all, in space, in a lightning storm, or in other environments where Dragon Bolts may find themselves, having eyes larger than a certain size can be quite hazardous. Second of all, they absorb light through their wings as solar panels, which gives them a certain ability to navigate using those as another pair of eyes. Thirdly, I couldn't find a way to make their eyes larger without it looking even weirder.

---STORY---

Well, way back in 2012, I first saw the CGI model of the Dragon Bolt, and I fell in love with the concept. Upon seeing the set, I was half let down and half elated at the usefulness of the set. However, I wanted to build something that would do the CGI model justice. So I started to build. And I quickly ran out of parts, having finished only the front legs, the back ones, the rear end and its head. So I got three more copies of the set, as I was running out of blue. Now, eventually I managed to build the body, and the wings. However, I had nowhere near enough parts to finish the design. At this point, it's fall 2014. I take apart the wings and steal some parts from the dragon's back to use in other MOCs, my Golden Mask Contest entry taking up most of them. I get some more sets, most notably two copies of Surge and Rocka Combat Machine. Then, I hear about this contest. And I decide that I will finish this project, once and for all. And I get to work.

---BACKSTORY---

See www.customherofactory.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_Bolt_(ThePurpleDragonNinja) for information on my canon's version of the Dragon Bolt. The rider is Abigail Katevnas, who has been assigned by the Hero Factory to research this species, which, despite probably being the most common species in the known galaxy, is quite obscure. As such, a wild Dragon Bolt has been captured and been trained to ignore Abigail to allow her to study it. For safety reasons, Abigail has been outfitted with special grip claws and a line to secure her to the Dragon Bolt in question. In emergencies, her wrist-mounted spikes can be used to administer sedatives.

---OTHER---

I think it's worth mentioning that this is, according to my canon, a newly adult Dragon Bolt. The CGI version or the set is about the size of an adolescent Dragon Bolt. I've also built a hatchling Dragon Bolt, which I will endeavor to post soon.

Also know as May Pops, the fruit is edible and the leaves when made into tea have a sedative effect. The leaves are also the larval food of Gulf Fritillary butterflies. You can see some of the small fruits not quite ripe yet. Will turn orange.
