I was out looking for birds this morning when I came upon this little Jewel. Not a Bird, but not bad :-)
The California Poppy was designated the state flower of California in 1903. Also known as the Flame Flower and Cup of Gold, the California Poppy grows wild throughout the state.
Native Americans in California valued the poppy as a food source and for the oil extracted from the plant.
The plant is used as an herbal remedy: an aqueous extract of the plant has sedative and anxiolytic actions. The extract acts as a mild sedative when smoked, but the effect is far milder than that of opium because California poppy contains a different class of alkaloids.
Sorry, but some comments for this Image were deleted when I uploaded another image from Lightroom. My version of Lightroom was updated today and I think that was the problem.

Erythrina Mulungu and its "customers"
July and August are months rich in beauty and color here.
Crossing the mountains that separate Rio de Janeiro from São Paulo, with a halfway detour to Minas Gerais, this is the time when the green is punctuated by many trees with red flowers, others in coral tones.
Erythrina mulungu, known by the common names of Murungu, Mulungu-coral, is an endemic tree in Brazil, found in several national ecosystem including the Amazon and Atlantic Forest.
The species is used as an ornamental tree in tropical and subtropical regions and as a medicinal plant in traditional South American medicine, especially in Brazil. The tree is 10 to 25 m tall, blooms from mid-August with the tree completely leafless, lasting until the end of September. Its flowers are much sought after by hummingbirds and other birds to suck their nectar.
The fruits ripen in October-November with the plant still without leaves, but they are not edible.
Studies show that the plant has sedative, anxiolytic and anticonvulsant properties.
In my hometown I saw specimens of this beautiful and exuberant flowering being attacked by flocks of Maritacas, and I ended up feeling a small shower of flowers on my head, as the clumsy creatures lose a lot of food on these wild visits to the trees where they feed on.
Maritaca is a popular term to refer to the various species of birds in the parrot family. Depending on the region, Maritaca is the name used for medium-sized birds, which are smaller than parrots.
In the first photo you can see the Psittacara leucophthalma (Periquitão Maracanã) which has an “oval” shaped head, general green coloration with the sides of the head and neck with some red feathers. The average size is 32cm. In juveniles, the red feathers on the head and under the wings are absent, being entirely green in color.
The species flyes in flocks of 5 to 40 individuals, sleeping collectively in different places.
Found from the east of the Andes, from Colombia and Venezuela to the north of Argentina and Uruguay, including part of the Amazon and almost all of Brazil.
In the second photo another species, the Brotogeris chiriri (Yellow-winged Parakeet or Star Parakeet).
It is found in Central and Eastern Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Eastern Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru. In the national territory, it occurs from the South to the extreme of Pará, Ceará, Maranhão, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Pantanal, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
Both species were feeding from the same tree when I took these photos.
I have seen mullein described as the most useful of weeds. It may be beneficial as a sedative, diuretic, expectorant, astringent, demulcent, and emollient. It may also be useful as an foreground element iin photographs. :) In case you don't know, the mullein is the stand of weeds midframe in front of the barn.

Silver leaf is an arbustive species originating in the Chihuahua desert in North America. It features branched ramage with ornamental foliage and flowering.
Flowers are lonely, tubular and can be white, pink, purple or blue, according to variety. Flowering occurs after summer rains.
From very low maintenance the silver leaf is an excellent choice for rocky gardens of desert inspiration. But its beauty can also be enjoyed, in several garden styles as it is a very versatile bush, vegetating well in vases as well.
Curiosity: The leaves and dried flowers make a tasty and slightly calming and sedative tea. Good for bedtime.

Wilde cichorei of wegenwachter (Cichorium intybus)

Wild chicory or road keeper (Cichorium intybus)
The popular name road keeper (German: Gemeine Wegwarte) refers to the presence of the plant in large numbers in roadsides along roads.
Chicory is used in folk and plant medicine for stomach and liver complaints, constipations and a loss of appetite.
A strengthening and sedative can be made from the plant in the form of a lick pot. For this, one part of fresh flowers must be chopped and crushed in a mortar. Then three parts of sugar should be added until a mixture is formed. This should be placed in the sun for a while in a tightly closed container and then kept cool and dark.

She bent over backwards to try and move forwards she should of just left you behind,
Cos you tried to make out that the problem was her but the problem was you the whole time,
She believed you loved her but you turned her blind,
You slept with others and told her lies,
She ignored the signs of a narcissist and lost herself for a guy,
Why do you only love her when it suits you?
cos thats something she got used to,
She don't wanna say the wrong thing or make the wrong move but she lost herself trying to keep you,
She don't want no part time love hearts too big for some half assed love and her past too dark to keep starting again,
She gave you one hundred percent but it weren't enough,
She's way too genuine for this generation of gentleman,
Little bit hood but she's ever so elegant, damaged and delicate,
Hearts so pure its like she was heaven sent,
She's soul medicine, never had anything only the negative searching for something outside of a sedative,
You messed her up and she's lost in her head again.

I took this photo from a big clump of Borage in the lane next to our house. I've tried in the past to photograph it but never succeeded - it can be a tad difficult because of the way the stunning flowers hang but this time I managed to find a way.
"Borage also known as starflower, is an annual herb in the flowering plant family Boraginaceae native to the Mediterranean region."
"Borage flower and leaves are used for fever, cough, and depression. Borage is also used for a hormone problem called adrenal insufficiency, for "blood purification," to increase urine flow, to prevent inflammation of the lungs, as a sedative, and to promote sweating."
It's also very popular with bees which of course is a very good thing indeed 😊

ENGLISH
Nymphaea alba, the white waterlily, European white water lily or white nenuphar, is an aquatic flowering plant in the family Nymphaeaceae. It is native to North Africa, temperate Asia, Europe and tropical Asia (Jammu and Kashmir).
It grows in water that is 30–150 cm (12–59 in) deep and likes large ponds and lakes.
The leaves can be up to 30 cm (12 in) in diameter and take up a spread of 150 cm (59 in) per plant. The flowers are white and they have many small stamens inside.
Although roots and stalks are used in traditional herbal medicine along with the flower, the petals and other flower parts are the most potent. Alcohol can be used to extract the active alkaloids, and it also boosts the sedative effects.

“A poppy is a flowering plant in the subfamily Papaveroideae of the family Papaveraceae. Poppies are herbaceous plants, often grown for their colourful flowers. One species of poppy, Papaver somniferum, is the source of the narcotic drug mixture opium, which contains powerful medicinal alkaloids such as morphine and has been used since ancient times as an analgesic and narcotic medicinal and recreational drug. It also produces edible seeds. Following the trench warfare in the poppy fields of Flanders, Belgium, during World War I, poppies have become a symbol of remembrance of soldiers who have died during wartime, especially in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other Commonwealth realms.
Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep, peace, and death: Sleep because the opium extracted from them is a sedative, and death because of the common blood-red colour of the red poppy in particular.[16] In Greek and Roman myths, poppies were used as offerings to the dead. Poppies used as emblems on tombstones symbolize eternal sleep. This symbolism was evoked in L. Frank Baum's 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, in which a magical poppy field threatened to make the protagonists sleep forever.[17] A second interpretation of poppies in Classical mythology is that the bright scarlet colour signifies a promise of resurrection after death.”
Papaya is a plant. The leaves are used to make medicine.
Papaya is used for preventing and treating gastrointestinal tract disorders, intestinal parasite infections, and as a sedative and diuretic. It is also used for nerve pains (neuralgia) and elephantoid growths. Elephantoid growths are large swollen areas of the body that are symptoms of a rare disorder of the lymphatic system caused by parasitic worms.
Papaya contains a chemical called papain, which is commonly used as a meat tenderizer.

Pineapple weed (Matricaria discoidea) was introduced to Britain from Oregon in the late 19th century and spread rapidly. It is now an abundant annual wildflower of waysides and waste places, its cone-shaped flower heads a familiar sight from June to September.
When crushed, the flowers give off an odour resembling ripe apples or pineapples, and it is thought that either this, or the fact that the flowers resemble a pineapple in appearance, is responsible for the plant’s common name. The flowers have an agreeable fruity taste before they are fully ripe, and have been added to salads, as well as being used, either fresh or dried, as an infusion.
A close relative of camomile, pineapple weed has been used in folk medicine for centuries. The name matricaria is derived from the Latin matrix (uterus), and camomiles have been used for a host of gynaecological disorders. Other uses for pineapple weed have been as a sedative, an anti-inflammatory, an antispasmodic and an anthelmintic.
A smokey and very different tasting honey.(a slightly bitter taste and then the sweetness hits) One teaspoon 45 minutes before bed acted like a strong sedative. Slept very deeply throughout the night. Maybe someday when I want to take a trip without leaving the farm, I'll be bold and increase the dosage. The most exotic honey I have ever owned. This brand is from Nepal. Local honey hunters risk their lives because the altitude is so high(about 8000 ft or higher) and the rugged remote mountains make it a dangerous adventure to just get to the special location where this prized honey is located. The bees that make this magical honey are the largest bees in the world, about 2 times larger than the average honey bee.
Rosebay Willowherb - one of our most beautiful wild flowers.
A tea made from it's fermented and dried leaves was common in England until the 17th century and is still popular in parts of Russia where it is known as Koporsky tea from the town of Koporye, where it has been produced since the 13th century.
The leaves are picked, rolled to slightly crush them and left to ferment before drying, which brings out the unique fragrance and taste.
Rosebay Willowherb is said to have more vitamin C than rosehips (which has up to 8 times more vitamin C than lemons), and also contains magnesium and B vitamins and is supportive to the function of the heart and the immune system as well as being caffeine-free.
The herb is also a mild sedative and is useful for the relief of lower urinary tract symptoms such as difficulty starting urination or a frequent need to urinate
Hawkweed has anti-inflammatory, diuretic, astringent, antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. Hawkweed is also used as an anti-bleeding, wound-healing and antiseptic agent in case of bleeding and slow-healing wounds, as an analgesic in case of headache and as a sedative in case of insomnia.
Found along northeastern Australia from Mackay to Cooktown, the Cairns Birdwing is Australia’s largest endemic butterfly. The females’ wingspan can measure a whopping 18cm, and they’re easily recognized thanks to their vivid coloration. I think their highly adapted lifecycle is their most fascinating attribute.
Male Cairns Birdwing Butterflies are smaller, but more colourful than the females. They are fussy butterflies who lay eggs on native rainforest Pipe Vines (Aristolochia tagala and Pararistolochia deltantha). Females find the ideal vine using chemical receptors in their legs and abdomen to ‘sense’ tender, caterpillar-friendly leaves. Newly hatched caterpillars eat their own nutritious egg shell, and will even eat other caterpillars if times are tough. Caterpillars are brightly coloured to ward off predators, and store toxins absorbed from Pipe Vines so attackers won’t make the same mistake twice!
The Cairns Birdwing caterpillar uses bright colours and sharp spines to ward off predators.
When caterpillars are almost ready to pupate they ringbark their vine. Although leaves droop from water loss, the flow of nutrients is concentrated so the caterpillar gets a more nutritious meal before pupation. Pupation occurs in a cleverly camouflaged cocoon, which resembles a dead, dried leaf.
As soon as adult butterflies hatch the race is on to mate, as they only live for 4 – 5 weeks. Males are extremely territorial, performing early morning patrols and competing with other males to find fresh, newly hatched females. Courtship can be lengthy (up to 36 hours) and aggressive, and apparently the female slips the male a sedative to ensure he behaves himself!
The species was once under threat due to wide-scale clearance of its native rainforest habitat, and the spread of exotic vines including Dutchman’s Pipe (Aristolochia elegans). A. elegans closely resembles the native A. tagala vine, and is lethal to the butterflies in their larval stage.

Simple yet lovely, cowslips are synonymous with spring and Easter. Find them in woods and meadows during springtime.
Value to wildlife
Cowslips are important for wildlife, their flowers an early source of nectar for various insects including bees, beetles and butterflies such as the brimstone. Cowslip is also a food plant for the Duke of Burgundy butterfly.
Did you know?
‘Cowslip’ is actually a distorted pronunciation of ‘cow slop’, so named because the flowers are associated with cow pat in meadows and fields.
Uses of cowslip
The plant was traditionally used to treat sleeping problems as it is said to have a sedative quality, as well as the flowers being used to help treat coughs.
Cowslip leaves are used in Spanish cooking and have a slightly citrusy flavour. The flowers are traditionally used to flavour English country wine.
Mythology and symbolism
Cowslips were traditionally picked on May Day to adorn garlands but also for other celebrations, such as weddings. Cowslips have also been called ‘St. Peter’s keys’ or ‘keys of heaven’ because the one-sided flower heads looked like a set of keys, and it was said that cowslips grew where St. Peter dropped the Key of Earth.
After a 6am start to get to Cambridge for 8am & waithg in prepared mode all day, I was cancelled for 2nd time @ 4.30pm. I perhaps need the sedative qualities of this old herb! Never mind means I am out again tomorrow with camera, I hope.
This herb can easily be mistaken for some hybrid wild orchid. Taken @ Snettisham in the RSPB car park
Bright orange when in flower, these seed pods contain a cherry coloured fruit. The dried fruit of P. alkekengi is called the golden flower in the Unani system of medicine, and used as a diuretic, antiseptic, liver corrective, and sedative. Physalis alkekengi seed fossils are known from Miocene of Siberia, Pliocene of Europe and Pleistocene of Germany. Physalis alkekengi pollen have been found in early Pleistocene sediments in Ludham east of Wroxham, East Anglia.
This fantastic little woodland flower only grows in pristine forest glades where fairies roam. Also known as the ghost flower or ice plant, prehistoric people used it to sooth their nerves and also as a sedative, though they were then said to have wild vivid erotic dreams. Hmm...

This past Friday thru Sunday were the days for the annual Great Falls Balloon Festival. I got up very early to go to Lewiston on Friday for the 6 AM lift off but sadly there was too much wind. So sort of against my better judgement, I went on Saturday and was pleased to see the event go off on time. Very little wind. This is one balloon that just launched and three others that are still being inflated prior to take off.
I wish I had more time on Flickr but there are a lot of things going on right now. Lily, our dog had her second operation on Aug first and is now in the 12 week recovery period when for the most part she cannot be disturbed and is on a leash out side and in a pen while inside all the while taking pain medicine and a sedative to keep here quiet. Also some construction and painting.
Things are getting back to "normal" whatever that is. We have "kids" coming down today, and we went to a seminar on Bonsai trees where neither we nor the trees needed masks. (Well, it's voluntary, and we've had the two Covid shots and I got a distemper so that I no longer need a sedative when hearing about politicians, schools, and "gender appropriate" woke language where neither word in the phrase makes sense.
Anyway, I haven't had any time to comment on your photos, and I'll catch up tomorrow ... unless the other kids decide to come on down.
I shot another 285 cacti and succulents today, and they all survived. I'm not entirely happy because my "failure rate" is up to 70%, and I'll have to tweak my methods, especially on the smallest flowers.
On the other hand, I'm fairly happy with this Echeveria agavoides first because I can pronounce it, second because I can now put name and plant together, and third because for a flower that's a quarter-of-an-inch, it's spectacular and very satisfying.
