The recent NHS hack highlights just one of the new challenges government faces as it enters the digital age. Digital public services need to be easy to use, secure and save money. But someone needs to be responsible for setting and enforcing standards, driving the improvement of services and safeguarding against cyberattacks. So, who is it?

To discuss this issue, our panel included:

Ciaran Martin, CEO, National Cyber Security Centre

Janet Hughes, Digital Leadership Director, Doteveryone

Bryan Glick, Editor in Chief, Computer Weekly

Daniel Thornton, Programme Director at the Institute, Chaired the discussion and presented new research.

Do bike parking well! Follow the three rules of Simple Bike Parking.

This is the only acceptably secure to lock one's bike on a grill (elementary school) rack when the ends are taken.

This sucks: It's difficult to maneuver your bike in this position; not everyone has a u-lock to fit around this; you risk scratching your frame; it's an inefficient use of bike parking space.

Specialist officers secured the arrest of three men this morning as part of an investigation into drugs supply across the Manchester area.

Today (11 February), a dedicated team from our Xcalibur taskforce, alongside officers from our Tactical Aid Uni, Challenger, and Neighbourhood teams, performed a series of strike warrants across six addresses in Manchester.

In total, three men – aged 21, 22, and 25 – were arrested, with a quantity of Class A drugs, several phones, and a machete seized as part of the work.

The trio were each arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and conspiracy to supply Class B drugs.

Additionally, the 22 year old was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and on suspicion of aggravated burglary, in connection with separate investigations.

The warrants were part of a long-term proactive investigation, focusing on the supply of Class A drugs in and around the South Manchester area.

The investigation commenced when the Greenheys Neighbourhood Team identified a property containing significant quantities of Class A drugs and cash.

This discovery initiated several months of enquiries, during which various tactics were employed to identify the suspects and establish links to additional addresses involved in the wider supply conspiracy.

The three arrested individuals remain in custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Kat McKeown, from GMP’s Xcalibur task force, said: “Our dedicated anti-gang team executed the warrants this morning in connection with an ongoing investigation into drugs supply in the Manchester area.

“This work has been several months in the making and I am glad that we have secured three arrests and made significant disruption to those we suspect of being involved in drugs supply.

“We want to show the public that we are committed to tackling organised crime and will utilise all resources available where necessary as part of that.”

The card reader in my computer has had trouble lately reading the SD card from our P&S camera unless the card was seated very securely in the slot. I've gotten in the habit of giving it a firm press when inserting it. Tonight, I guess I must have been pushing in at a slight angle, because I heard a crunch as I taco'd my SD card. I apparently seated it sufficiently, because despite the damage, I was still able to pull all the data off the card. This is not the first time I've heard of the data on SanDisk cards surviving catastrophic physical damage.

This is why professional grade cameras use beefy CompactFlash cards instead of pansy SD cards. This is also why I only buy cards made by respected manufacturers (SanDisk, Lexar, and Kingston). I've had no-name cards lose data just sitting on a shelf.

This experience prompted me to dig up historical and technical information comparing the two formats, as well as the recently-announced XQD format. Read about it on the Prairie Rim Images blog:

Securing today’s connected enterprise is a race across many different terrains where we are often unsure or unaware of what lies ahead and who or where our opponents really are.As boundaries continue to erode between the physical and cyber worlds, between high and low-tech risks, between the human workforce and artificial intelligence, and as the valuation of digital compared to physical assets undergoes radical shifts, ASIS Europe 2018 tackles the most challenging issues.Cyber-physical threats in hyper-complex, connected environments are the core themes of the event.ASIS, as a global community of security practitioners tasked with the protection of assets – people, property, and information – is uniquely positioned to deal with enterprise-wide risks.

Strobist - Shoot-thru's camera right and left

I recently visited India. My lasting impression from the tour is aptly captured in this photo. Almost all the places i visited (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) were under severe security obviously a fallout of the almost two decade long terrorism in our country. However, what made me really glad is the fact that inspite of repeated attacks and threats people refuse to bow down. As seen, India Gate and all other tourist places are choc-a-bloc with tourist and people of all shades. Long live the Indian spirit!!
