The Jelly Belly Candy Company, or simply Jelly Belly, is a maker of jelly beans and other candy. Formerly known as The Herman Goelitz Candy Company,[2] Jelly Belly produces more than 34 million pounds of candy annually.[3] The company is based in Fairfield, California and has nearly 800,000 square feet (74,000 m2) of production space between its Fairfield , North Chicago, Ill., and Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin facilities.[3]

Jelly Belly makes many varieties of jelly beans, including juicy pear, watermelon, root beer, cherry and buttered popcorn. The jelly beans were most famously endorsed by U.S. President Ronald Reagan, who kept a jar of them on his desk in the White House and on Air Force One[2], and who also made them the first jelly beans in outer space, sending them on the 1983 Challenger shuttle as a surprise for the astronauts.

Men's dances

* Fancy Dance or Fancy Feather Dance (Northern and Southern styles): A dance featuring vivid regalia with dramatic movement, including spins and leaps. Often the biggest crowd-pleasing competition of a pow-wow. Aside from bright color and non-traditional materials, fancy dancers are also distinguished by use of a two-bustle design on their regalia.

* Northern Traditional (simply "Men's Traditional" in the North): A dance featuring traditional regalia, authentic design and materials, single or no bustle, and movements based on traditional dances.

* Southern Straight:

* Grass Dance: A dance featuring regalia with long, flowing fringe and designs remniscent of grass blowing in the wind. Dance movements are more elaborate than the traditional dancers, but less flashy than the fancy dancers

Mail Tribune

May 13, 2008

Dianne Ruch was one of 16,107 Jackson County voters who had cast their ballots by Monday, a week before the Oregon primary concludes on May 20.

"I want Hillary, or else the guy with the strange name," said the 52-year-old Medford resident after she put her ballot in the box at the Jackson County Elections Center in Medford. "It would be hell with McCain."

Of the 115,596 registered voters in the county, 14 percent had returned their ballots to the elections center by Monday afternoon. Both Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois and Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York have campaigned heavily in Oregon, a pivotal state in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. The winner will take on Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the apparent Republican nominee, in the general election.

Ruch made up her mind to vote for Clinton months ago, but said she would be happy with Obama as well.

She said if Obama wins the nomination, "come November I will go ahead and vote for the one I can't pronounce."

The elections center expects the pace of ballot returns to pick up by the end of the week, and that by Tuesday, more than 50 percent of registered voters will have cast their ballots.

"They always come in at the last minute," said Jackson County Clerk Chris Walker, who is running for her first full term.

Walker said many voters are having a difficult time deciding on some of the measures.

Statewide, 13 percent of voters had returned their ballots by Sunday, the last day tallied by the Oregon Elections Division.

Summer Davis, compliance specialist for the Elections Division, said the ballot return numbers are slightly ahead of previous years.

In 2006, 10 percent of ballots had been returned by this point in the primary, and in 2004, 12 percent, she said.

Ashland resident Cara Frantz-DeJong said despite the tug-of-war between the candidates, she made up her mind six months ago to vote for Obama, and so did her husband.

"I only voted for the presidential candidate," said Frantz-DeJong, 31. "I didn't feel I knew enough about the local candidates. I felt it would be unethical to make any other votes."

Both Clinton and Obama are expected to return to Oregon this weekend.

Interest in the two candidates has swelled the ranks of Democrats.

In Jackson County, Democrats make up 37 percent of the registered voters. Republicans make up 40 percent, while non-affiliates and other parties make up 23 percent. There are 42,367 Democrats, 46,165 Republicans and 26,547 from other parties or non-affiliates.

In 2004, 42 percent of voters were Republican and 34 percent Democrat, while other voters numbered 25 percent.

There are 115,596 registered voters in the county this primary, compared to 123,000 in the 2004 general election.

Pow-wow committee

A pow-wow committee consists of a number of individuals who do all the planning prior to the event. If a pow-wow has a sponsor, such as a tribe, college, or organization, many or all members of the committee may come from that group. The committee is responsible to recruit and hire the head staff, publicize the pow-wow, secure a location, and recruit vendors who pay for the right to set up and sell food or merchandise at the pow-wow.

Black leopards

A melanistic morph of the leopard occurs, particularly in mountainous areas and rain forests. The black color is heritable and caused by recessive gene loci.[19] (While they are commonly called black panthers, the term is not exclusive to leopards; it also applies to melanistic jaguars.)

Melanistic leopards are particularly common on the Malayan Peninsula: early reports suggested up to half of all leopards there are black, but a 2007 camera-trap study in Taman Negara National Park found that all specimens were melanistic.[20] Although the benefits of melanism are difficult to interpret, it may serve as camouflage in the rainforest habitat. (Genetic research has found four independent origins for melanism in cats, suggesting that there must be some adaptive advantage.)[19] Another possibility is that the color variation was relic adaptation to an epidemic; genes causing melanism can also affect the immune system.[20]

In Africa, black leopards are much less common as melanism is not an adaptive advantage on the savanna: dark coloration provides poor camouflage and makes hunting difficult. Estimates are as low as one in 80 or 100. In the dense forests of the Ethiopian Highlands, however, the black leopard is much more common than in Africa generally; as many as one in five leopards may be melanistic.

Planning for a pow-wow generally begins months, perhaps even a year, in advance of the event by a group of people usually referred to as a pow-wow committee. Pow wows may be sponsored by a tribal organization, by an American Indian community within an urban area, a Native American Studies program or American Indian club on a college or university campus, or any other organization that can provide startup funds, insurance, and volunteer workers.

Love is any of a number of emotions and experiences related to a sense of strong affection.[1] The word love can refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from generic pleasure ("I loved that meal") to intense interpersonal attraction ("I love my wife"). This diversity of meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, even compared to other emotional states.

The company operates two manufacturing plants in Fairfield, Calif., and in North Chicago, Ill. A third facility is a distribution center in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., which offers public tours.

The Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield, California, has daily tours and were named "Best Factory Tour in America" by a 2005 Reader's Digest article. The tours, which are free for anyone, take visitors along suspended walkways over the rooms where the candy is manufactured, stopping them from time to time to watch video segments about what is going on below. Free samples are distributed afterward. Visitors can also purchase bags of Belly Flops, imperfect jelly beans that didn't quite make it to specification. A feature of the tour are several portraits made entirely of Jelly Belly jelly beans.

Sunset Colors

The red hues of the sky at sunset and sunrise are caused by Rayleigh scattering, the same mechanism that causes the sky to be blue. [1] [2] [3]

As light travels through the atmosphere, some of it is scattered at large angles by small particles. This type of scattering, where the particles are much smaller than the wavelength, is called Rayleigh scattering. Because Rayleigh scattering is much stronger for shorter wavelengths, like blue, the light from a clear sky is blue. Likewise, as the blue component is scattered out of a ray of sunlight, the remaining light becomes yellower. At sunrise or sunset the light has traveled a long distance through the atmosphere leaving only the longest wavelengths like orange and red. The reddened sunlight illuminates clouds and other particles. The combination of orange and red clouds and the blue sky can produce a variety of colors.

Volcanic eruptions release particles into the atmosphere that affect scattering. A number of eruptions in recent times, such as those of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 and Krakatoa in 1883, have been sufficiently large to produce remarkable sunsets and sunrises all over the world.

Sometimes just before sunrise or after sunset a green flash can be seen.
