Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Hovercraft "Moytel" departs Sea Island Search and Rescue Station with a SAR tasking from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre for a second incident that day. One tragic and one 'routine' mission.
The migratory waterfowl have FINALLY started to arrive. Recent weather patterns (climate change) have disrupted their comings and goings. I do appreciate seasonal wildlife diversity.
puffins are polite. While spending hours observing, photographing, and napping (yup) with puffins, there was never a single squabble amongst them. There is always room for one more to perch alongside and everyone just gets along.

A shot like this has been an idea in my head for more than two years. It finally took a rental lens to get the view that I wanted.
Jim Richardson did a similar image from somewhere in Kansas in a recent National Geographic article. He chose to use flash to light up a tree, but I truly like the black silhouette which is how I saw the scene as I stared into the Milky Way last night. Do yourself a favor, get out to a location with dark skies and no moon...the Milky Way from horizon to horizon is unforgettable. It bothers me that dark sky sites are increasingly difficult to find (as you can see from small town and interstate lights in the bottom of this frame).
I would hope that when anyone in this world throws a penny in a fountain, sees a shooting star, or meets a genie, they'll wish for the only thing they should: peace.

Should Ould acquaintance be forgot, as the song goes?
I had searched keywords in Lr and came across this bench scene from 2016. The encroaching foliage had caught my eye.
In the interest of blending old and new, I wondered what might happen if I brought it to the LAB color space in Ps and wildly exaggerated the separation of hues. Learning about the LAB color space has been a major endeavour of mine lately.
I discovered, not surprisingly since this was an infrared image, that the green-magenta channel had tons of magenta information.
Very surprisingly, when I turned off the curve adjustment that exaggerated the green-magenta, the exaggerated blue-yellow curve adjustment showed this pretty much.
It doesn't look like channel swapping. And it doesn't have the duotone look, as the brownish and purplish tones aren't at the luminosity ends of dark and light. The LAB exaggeration shows where in the image, blue and yellow information was, irrespective of luminosity. The exaggerated yellow interacted with the natural amount of magenta in the image to create the various browns we see. The exaggerated blue interacted with the natural magenta to create the various purplish violet hues here.
This manner of editing won't take precedence over my inclination to turn my IR images to black/white, but it's a nice occasional change up.

The Search For Validation. 💟
Last time I checked, there wasn’t a scale for kindness, morality or sense of humour. There wasn’t a grade system for your ability to be swept away inside a beautiful song, or a book, or a poem. There’s no number that can be assigned to the impact your art can have on others, or the way your lover holds you when you come home defeated after a bad day.
I love social media, and I think it can bring all kinds of beautiful things into people’s lives - connection, art, sharing someone else’s joys, the bond of humanity across cultures. Social media essentially brought me a career in something I love, so I owe social media quite a lot.
That said, I’ve found it quite difficult to separate my art from the number that sits next to it. I’ve struggled with not questioning myself when faced with 200+ souls clicking a button to unfollow my work each time I share a new piece. Social media is rewiring us to find our validation in our phone screens, and I can promise you - it’s not there.
I’ve decided to start up a blog - somewhere with no measurements or numbers - to put all my thoughts and behind the scenes. My first post is the making of this image, as well as my journey of social media, and how it’s affected my self esteem. It feels exciting to be taking care of my “art & soul” (see what I did there?) a bit better!

Lance-A-Lot spots something out of the corner of his eye as he searches the banks of Horsepen Bayou for his next meal. Tri-colored Heron foraging on the bayou at low tide. Also a bit of blue on the beak and some red still remaining in the eye as the breeding colors fade.
