Pahto (Mount Adams), seen from Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
Last weekend I decided to meet up with a friend for a sunset hike at Mount Rainier National Park. We made detailed plans ahead of time for both the hike and sunset watching, and then ended up both arriving later than planned, doing a different hike, and hiking more slowly than anticipated due to snow (yes, more snow!) on the trail and a stop to search for my friend's dropped phone. But sunset wasn't until 8:51pm so we figured we still had plenty of time.
We were hiking with the sun behind us, and time was flying by as it has a way of doing when we hike together, so when we emerged from a forested section of the trail into a meadow, we suddenly noticed that the sun was starting to drop into the trees, and realized we had to turn around and hustle back down the trail to where we had planned to watch the sunset over Tahoma (Mount Rainier).
As we hiked at a quick pace back, through every break in the trees, my eyes were drawn to this view of Pahto and the south Cascades. In the evening light, with that fog rising from the forest below, I finally decided it was necessary to stop for photos, despite our time constraints.
Note: Pahto is the second highest peak in Washington, standing 12,281 feet/3743 meters tall and is considered one of the 5 active volcanoes in the state, although the last eruption was 1000 years ago. It is one of the five sacred mountains to the native Yakama peoples and part of the mountain is territory of the Yakama Nation.

I walked the world afar
Built up a thousand walls
To try and hide away
I searched to find my soul
A journey far from home
Lost in a life I'd made
And I'd been 'round in circles
Living for the moment
I know I ran so far
Was acting kind of crazy
Coming up with empty
Felt like I lost my heart
Now I've found a love that
Is clearer than the deep blue skies
It's true You were right there
I can see it in the days gone by
I see You in the days gone by
Your promise never left my side
I know sometimes I tried to give up
Still You caught me when I fell from high
I see You in the days gone by
You took my fragile fate
And didn't hesitate
Your love in every scar
Passion with no restraints
Held back the darkest days
So now my life is Yours
You've got me when I'm broken
You're with me when I'm hopeless
I know You're never far
Your mercy has no ending
It perseveres unfailing
You'll always have my heart
Now I've found a love that
Is clearer than the deep blue skies
It's true You were right there
I can see it in the days gone by
I see You in the days gone by
Your promise never left my side
I know sometimes I tried to give up
Still You caught me when I fell from high
I see You in the days gone by
See You in the days gone by
See You in the days gone by
And I need You everyday 'cause
I see You in the days gone by
Your promise never left my side
I know sometimes I tried to give up
Still You caught me when I fell from high
I see You in the days gone by

I was watching one of the log piles yesterday with my friend John, where I walk my Dog, when this tiny beauty was seen weaving in and out of the logs. The first one we have seen and been able to get photographs of. So you can imagine how excited we were. A great day and the perfect start to the weekend.
Size:
Pygmy Shrew 40-60 mm; tail 32-46 mm the Common Shrew size that I posted before being Size: 48-80mm, tail 24-44mm; tail less than 3/4 length of head and body.
Weight:
2.4-6.1g. Weight may decrease up to 28% in winter.
Diet:
They feed mainly on insects, arachnids and woodlice, requiring regular meals and eating up to 125% of their body weight in food daily. Unlike common shrews, they rarely eat earthworms.
Lifespan:
Peak mortality is at 2-4 months and the maximum lifespan is around 13 months.
Origin & Distribution:
Widespread throughout the mainland of Britain and Ireland, in most terrestrial habitats which offer sufficient ground cover. They are also found on the Isle of Man and Outer Hebrides, where common shrews are absent. Pygmy shrews are active day and night, largely above ground. They make and use "surface tunnels" in vegetation and will frequent burrows dug by other animals. They seem to be relatively more common on moorland than are common shrews.
Habitat:
Urban & gardens
Deciduous woodland
Grassland
Mixed woodland
Arable land
Behaviour:
As in all shrews, senses of smell, hearing and touch are well-developed. Pygmy shrews are solitary and aggressive towards conspecifics. Home ranges vary from around 500-2000 square metres, depending on habitat, with maximum densities of around 12 per hectare. Strict territoriality is only abandoned during the breeding season.
Breeding:
Pygmy shrews overwinter as immatures and breed between April and October, producing two or three litters of 5-7 young. Their main predators are owls and other avian predators, particularly those which hunt on moorland.

. . for breakfast.
While out in search of a sunrise I came across this father and daughter setting off in their small boat to catch fish. The morning sun was not fully over the horizon and a mist was burning off the water.
Have been away from Flickr for a week so I surely have a lot of catching up to do . . .
But being honest, the break was refreshing.

In search of some more mist Iain (Highlandscape) and I took a pre-dawn trip to Loch Droma this morning. No clouds to take any colour but the mist didn't disappoint and with a bit of patience (and a 5 stop ND) there were also some decent reflections to be had.

Short Beach is an excellent place to search for wave tumbled agates and jasper. Search the large gravel beds during low tide, especially after a storm. Once polished, the better quality rocks are considered to be semi-precious gemstones.

the last flower to appear on my balcony. It's a trumpet-shaped thing on a twisty vine; I'll have to search my files for the name, I do have it somewhere... Cheap thing from Lidl but it has lasted a long time.
Searched for a Barred owl and Great Horned owl at a park. This guy was right above my head watching me search.
This is an oldie ('21), but it deserves an encore. This Kirtland's Warbler, found at Swann Park in Baltimore, is the only one recorded for Maryland. It stayed for a week or so, giving excited birders many fantastic views. It exhibited no fear of humans, occasionally landing on or walking over shoes as it searched for food. Given the behavior, thinking was that it was a young bird.
Kayla searched for any sign of the Corogins. How could they vanish so quickly? She hadn’t been in the trance that long.
All she could do now was descend to where they had been standing and try to pick up their trail.
Kaszon watched her through his scanner.
Kayla’s heat signature blazed like a beacon against the stone—impossible to miss. She stood on the roof of a building barely a hundred yarons away. But she moved fast. In moments she was off the roof and slipping between structures.
It didn’t matter.
The scanner tracked her heat through the stone as if the walls weren’t there. The Mudag’s electric motors hummed softly as it glided through the labyrinth of the Core complex, angling to intercept her.
Kayla reached the spot where the Corogin group had paused. Dusty footprints marked the street in chaotic patterns. She crouched, trying to decipher them. The trail split—two directions, two possibilities.
Which way?
As she leaned closer, an energy beam tore past her head, scorching the wall beside her. Stone exploded outward.
They were behind her.
She sprinted around the corner, breath ragged, voices closing in. The thin air burned her lungs. Another shot sizzled past, close enough to feel its heat exploding the side of another structure.
Then her stomach dropped.
She had run into a blind alley. A dead end!
Walls rose sheer on all sides. No open doors. No ladders. No escape.
She spun, desperate, searching for anything—any crack, any ledge. Behind her, three Corogins advanced on foot, and the Mudag rumbled into view, rounding the corner..
Kayla froze, out of breath, helpless.
In slow, dreadful motion, the Mudag slid into position, blocking the only exit. Its weapon swiveled toward her, locking on. One of the Corogins yelled “HALT”
She had moments to live.
