Departing Marathon for a deep sea fishing trip with the 'Seven Mile Bridge' in the background. The deep blue waters off the east cost of Florida Keys is of the Gulf Stream where waters as deep as 2,000 feet are home to hard-fighting tuna, lightning-fast dolphin, torpedo-shaped wahoo and leaping sailfish. Waters off the west coast are of the Atlantic. The Seven Mile Bridge is a bridge in the Florida Keys, in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It connects Knight's Key (part of the city of Marathon, Florida) in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys.

Orbicular Batfish in Burgers Ocean.
The Orbicular Batfish (Platax orbicularis) is a popular aquarium fish endemic to tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Its body is almost disc-shaped, and very thin; the tail, about 20% of the body length, is fan-shaped and taller than it is long. Males can grow to up to 50cm in length, though aquarium specimens are generally much shorter.
In the wild, the Orbicular Batfish is found in brackish or marine waters, usually around reefs, at depths from 5 to 30 metres. Its range extends from the Red Sea and East Africa in the east to the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia in the west, and from southern Japan in the north to northern Australia and New Caledonia.
Juvenile fish are solitary or live in small groups, among mangroves or other inner sheltered lagoons. Adults are found in more open waters and at greater depth.
Burgers Ocean, a part of Burgers Zoo (Arnhem, the Netherlands), is a tropical reef, where you will find living corals, coral fishes, sharks, rays and many more animal species from the tropical seas in South-east Asia.
Highlight is a tunnel through a tank with sting rays and sharks swimming over your head.
It consists of 11 very big bassins with a total content of over 8 million litres of seawater. The largest bassin is protected by the largest window in the world, a 100 m2 and 35 cm thick. For keeping the water clean there are 10 km in piping and a pumping capacity of 1.050 m3 per hour. They are able to produce an equavilant of 57.000 litres seawater.
In the aquariums of Burgers Ocean live over 3000 fish in 160 species, and over 5000 invertebrates in over 200 species (including 3000 corals in about 100 species), plus numerous polyps and the like.

Ronde vleermuisvis in Burgers Ocean.

It just brought back memories of catching them back in the early 70's. My mother got me into fishing, not my father and she would come out on the charter boat's with me, even in rough weather.

Two whitebar surgeonfish (Acanthurus leucopareius) in Burgers Ocean.
There are over 80 species of surgeonfish worldwide. Surgeonfish are found in tropical oceans, especially near coral reefs, with most species in the Indo-Pacific, but a few are found in the Atlantic Ocean. Depending on species, they grow to a maximum length of 15-50 cm. Many are very colourful and consequently popular in the marine aquarium.

The fishing harbour of Anstruther at sunset, Kingdom of Fife, Scotland
Some background information:
Anstruther is a charming little fishing town in Fife, Scotland, situated on the North Sea coast about 14 kilometres (9 miles) south-southeast of the university city of St Andrews. The town comprises two settlements, Anstruther Easter and Anstruther Wester, which are divided by a stream, the Dreel Burn. With a population of more than 3,500, it is the largest community on the Firth of Forth's north-shore coastline known as the East Neuk. To the east, it merges with the village of Cellardyke.
In earlier times, Fife, where Anstruther is located, was one of the major Pictish kingdoms, known as Fib, and today it is still commonly known as the Kingdom of Fife within Scotland. The Pictish king list and De Situ Albanie documents of the Poppleton manuscript mention the division of the Pictish realm or Albany into seven sub-kingdoms, one being Fife. The earliest known reference to the common epithet "Kingdom of Fife" dates from only 1678, in a proposition that the term derives from the quasi-regal privileges of the Earl of Fife.
The name of Anstruther derives from Scottish Gaelic, meaning "place of one burn". Local tradition states that early in the 12th century, Alexander I of Scotland granted the lands of Anstruther to a William de Candela. However, no records survive of this original grant, and the earliest recorded lord of Anstruther was mentioned in a charter of 1225. There have been several theories as to the origin of the, possibly mythical, William, but recent research has suggested that he may have been a Norman count, whose family came from Italy to England around 1066.
In the same year, it took the intervention of Pope Honorius III to settle a teinds dispute between the monks of Dryburgh Abbey and the fishermen of Anstruther, suggesting that the fishing was sufficiently good to warrant arguing over. Sometime in the 1280s, land in Anstruther Easter was gifted to the Cistercian monks of Balmerino Abbey, and soon a first chapel was built.
In 1583, James VI of Scotland gave the town the status of a Royal Burgh with trading rights, recognizing the importance of the port, called the draucht of Anstruther. The bounds of the new Burgh were the "Silver Dyke" on the east, the low water line on the south, the Anstruther burn to the west, and the Kylrynnie march road. James Melville's diary provides a graphic account of the arrival of a ship from the Spanish Armada to Anstruther. Local tradition has long held that some of the survivors remained and intermarried with the locals. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the town was home to The Beggar's Benison, a gentleman's club devoted to "the convivial celebration of male sexuality".
By the 19th century, Anstruther-Easter, Anstruther-Wester, and Kilrenny were all separate royal and parliamentary boroughs. The Royal Burgh of Anstruther-Easter held tanning, shipbuilding, and fish-curing establishments, as well as a coasting trade. In the 1870s, the Board of Fisheries constructed a new harbour, which was completed by 1877. By the First World War, the community was connected to St Andrews by the North British Railway. Herring fishing remained a feature of the area until the mid-20th century when, after a record catch in 1936, the shoals mysteriously declined until the industry effectively disappeared by 1947.
However, there are still some full-time fishermen in Anstruther, who bring their haul ashore day by day, although more recreational vessels are now moored in the harbour. The town is home to the Scottish Fisheries Museum and has several fish and chips shops that offer fresh local fish. The most noted one is the Anstruther Fish Bar, which won several awards, among them the "Seafish Fish and Chips shop of the year" in 2001/2022 and 2008/2009, the "Food Awards Scotland’s Takeaway of the Year Award" in 2014, and the "Visit Scotland ‘Taste Our Best’ Award" no fewer than seven times between 2015 and 2021.
Furthermore, Anstruther is home to a golf course and Scotland's only true-scale model Solar System. The model, which shows the Sun and planets and the distances between them all at the same scale of 1 to ten thousand million, is located mostly in the town centre. It stretches almost 600 m from the Sun to Pluto. The town is popular among day trippers and overnight guests alike and we really enjoyed our three nights‘ stay there.
The morning sun over the sea created an interesting silhouette of the fisherman preparing his rods & lines.
Unicorn fish in Burgers Ocean
The unicorn fishes are 17 species of surgeonfishes in the genus Naso; all of which are marine fish living in tropical seas, usually around coral reefs. They are so named because of a spike that protrudes from its forehead; however some species have a bulbous protrusion rather than a pronounced spike, and some lack a spike altogether.
The species here is Spotted Unicorn Fish or Paletail Unicorn Tang (Naso brevirostris).

There will be looots more to come from this shoot - look at this as a sneak peak from something you'll see soon. :) Caitlin all dolled up, ready to be a mermaid!
The colorful makeup and hair by the lovely Adina Sullivan.
Two lookdowns (Selene vomer), also known as Atlantic or silver moonfish, horsehead and many other names, in Diergaarde Blijdorp (Zoo Rotterdam), the Netherlands.
The lookdown is a real unusual-looking saltwater and brackish water fish with its shiny thin body and blunt high forehead. The head has the mouth set low and the eyes high.
The lookdown's eyes often have the illusion that they are looking down at the bottom at all times. They are usually described as being silvery on both sides with darker tints on top. The body length is 16 - 30 cm. The longest lookdown known was 48.3 cm long, the heaviest known lookdown weighed 2.1 kg.
In the western Atlantic at depths of 1 to 15 m, the lookdown is found from Canada and Maine south to Uruguay, which includes Bermuda, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.
The lookdown live in large groups of hundreds to thousands of animals. These groups prey on small fish, which they as a group, such as pelicans, embed and hunt.

This family reminded me of my own childhood in Gibraltar, sea fishing for dinner with my parents. My mother was amazing at fishing! Caught huge fish. My father rarely caught anything haha!
I like sea fishing. I hope I can do it again one day. It's so chill. Patience, patience, patience. Much like photography!

I know fish don't everyone like. There is fish, however, which is very soft in taste. If you prepare it well, it tastes excellent. I very often eat "Merluza" (hake). It is obtained filleted and without fishbones.
My summer recipe for 2-3 people
Ingredients: approx. 300 gr hake, approx. 1 litre water, 2 fish bouillon cubes, 1 onion, 5 cloves, 3 bay leaves, 1 leek, 2-3 carrots, 2 potatoes, 7-8 whole black peppercorns, 1 lemon, parsley
Recipe: Pour the cold water into a large pan. Add the fish stock cubes, the whole onion with cloves, the bay leaves and the peppercorns and bring everything to the boil.
In the meantime, cut the leeks, carrots and potatoes into pieces and add to the mixture. Cook for 5 minutes.
Then place the fish in the broth. Cover and let simmer at 80°C for 10 minutes. DO NOT COOK, otherwise it will fall apart!
Wash the lemon with peel, cut into pieces and strip/pluck the clean leaves of the parsley from the stalk.
Carefully lift the fish out of the pan and serve with the sieved vegetables. Finally, spread the lemon pieces and sprinkle with the parsley leaves.
It goes well with mayonnaise, or a tender onion mayonnaise (mayonnaise, grated onion, salt & mix it) and of course a cold sip of dry white wine.
Now I wish everyone a good appetite and especially those who didn't like fish up to here .. ;)))
Ingredientes: aprox.
