I've gone ahead and let the boys join cub scouts. We had our first den meeting yesterday, and the boys had a good time with all of their friends. They wanted to join so badly, at least partly because all of their friends from school were joining and they love the idea of going fishing and camping and such. I seriously debated about it because of my limited time and energy, as well as because the Boy Scouts of America have been slammed the last few years for being intolerant of many types of alternate lifestyles. This gave me serious pause because I don't want to support an organization that espouses values I can't agree with, but on a local scale, the scouts seem to be run by kindly, intelligent and tolerant people. So we're going ahead for now.
I was sad to see Riley in his uniform get a number of surprised and hostile stares yesterday as well as a number of scowls directed at both him and myself. It's gotten very rare to see Cub Scouts in uniform anymore. Perhaps scouts are becoming regarded as a right wing brainwashing sort of organization, I don't know. But it's sad and confusing for a little boy who just wants to go fishing with his buddies to run into open hostility. I'll be more careful where I let them wear their uniforms, at least.
