River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.

These images were taken during the month of September 2013. In this particular area, project work has all but ceased. To the casual observer, it's now a case of the riverbanks slowly reverting to a 'ghost site'!

The following are a small selection of documented proposals for public consideration.

 

The project was born of a need to address the negative impact of high water levels and flooding of the River Dargle on local residents, businesses and commuters.

Major structural works include widening the channel downstream of Bray Bridge along the golf course just before the DART bridge

 

- installation of a culvert on the north side of Bray Bridge creating, in effect, an “extra arch” in the bridge to allow for a greater volume of water

- River Bank stabilisation works in areas from Bray Bridge upstream past the Peoples Park and bed widening and adaptation works in the Slang area.

Nice model of a beautiful airliner - love the scheme. Pity this model suffered from quality-control problems. I am starting to sell off much of my diecast models - I'd rather spend the money on trips to aviation museums and my photography.

These images were taken during the last week of October 2012, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed.

 

Gabions consist of steel ‘baskets’ filled with rock pieces. They are filled and then fixed together to provide protection and strength to the existing river bank. They allow ground water to flow through them which helps prevent waterlogging of the bank behind them. Existing examples of these can be seen (here) on the North bank to the rear of the La Vallee Apartments.

Long shallow versions of gabions, known as ‘mattresses’, are used to protect the edges of the river channel, particularly at bends in the river.

 

The recent surge of flood water has subsided, allowing working access to the river banks again.

 

When the DublinBike scheme was first announced many, if not all, people believed that it would fail because the bikes would be stolen or vandalised within days. Much to my surprise it has been a huge success and apparently only bicycle has been stole. According to local legend the thief tried to sell the stolen bike to a local bicycle shop claiming that he owned the bicycle.

 

Dublin was the 17th city to implement such a scheme, and it is considered one of the most successful bike sharing schemes in the world. As part of my “Street Of Dublin” project I am in the process of photographing all the bike stations in the city. The photographs will be included on a website which will include maps and detailed information about the surrounding areas including pubs, restaurants and places of interest.

 

DublinBikes is a public bicycle rental scheme which has operated in the city since 2009. Initially the scheme used 450 French-made unisex bicycles distributed across 40 stations. By 2011 the scheme had expanded to 550 bicycles and 44 stations, and again in 2013 it was announced that a major expansion of the scheme would add a further 950 bikes and another 58 hire points.

River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.

These images were taken during the last week of May 2013, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed.

 

Activity in this Slang area has been drastically curtailed in recent months. Minimal landscaping work on the riverbank top area. And, with the passage of time, and occasional Spring waters, the River has changed it's flow path, having shifted and sculpted the sand/stones/gravel into a twisting, winding pattern along the riverbed.

 

The protection work continues along the river bank, beyond the temporary access bridge.

 

In the background, atop of the slope, we can see evidence of the construction works for the future Cairnhill Nursing Home.

Viewed from this angle, those works appear to be quite close to the edge . . . . and that is a hillside that would require repeated stabilisation work to maintain the integrity of the soil.

We can see evidence of those works, designed to protect and re-inforce the section of the slope directly below the nursing home works.

 

A contributing factor in the instability/fragility of the soil has been the removal of the trees and shrubs that knitted the soil together.

 

This work would continue in different forms for a long period of time. Finally they would need to need to build a stone buttress at the base of the slope to prevent soil slippage.

River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.

These images were taken during the last week of September 2012, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed.

 

In preparation for the river-bank strengthening/protection along this stretch of the river, a 2nd channel was created -- with the intention of diverting the river.

Having endured a similar flooding only days earlier, another heavy fall of rain caused the channels to fill up again.

It meant starting all over again - draining this road/bank side channel, cutting a release channel near the bridge to release the volume, and activating pumps to assist with the repeated drainage.

 

Matters were never helped by the overflow pipe which siphoned run-off from the adjacent motorway!

 

Always quite amazing to see how water levels could drain away within a few days.

The question would always be -- how much work could be completed before the (inevitable) next run of water?

 

As we can see, one or two day's intense rain could produce rapid flooding of channels, swamping on-going works, and causing temporary vehicle access paths to have to be repaired.

River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.

These images were taken during the second week of September, 2016.

 

On a rare trip down to the Harbour area, just to check out progress here. Throughout the summer, this is where the heavy-duty engineering works have been taking place.

This is a section of the flood protection scheme that I have pretty much ignored -- it's inconvenient for me to access, and others cover it much better.

Check out 'Turgidson'.

 

Standing on an access bridge, adjacent to the Bray Boxing Club (from whence sprang Katie Taylor, and others of illustrious note), looking back up the river, towards the town direction.

 

In the foreground is the Railway bridge, and in the distance we can see some construction works taking place on the Ravenswell Road, temporarily closed due to on-going works.

That is the site of the old Bray Golf Club -- hotly contested as a (potentially) poorly considered site for a shopping centre development complex, and still an area of ground that has to act as a flood plain in the event of tidal surges.

 

The Irish Rail Bridge, Bray Harbour:

Phase 1 flood defence works to the Irish Rail bridge commenced in August 2016.

Phase 2 flood defence works will be completed during May to September 2017. This work is being undertaken directly by Irish Rail.

 

The work includes strengthening the integrity of the bridge by creating buttresses around the base of each pillar.

 

To do this they have to pile-drive sheets into the river bedrock.

The work is complicated by;

(a) the need not to damage or disturb in any way the actual bridge itself (Irish Rail train and DART carriages pass overhead on an hourly basis), (b) the confined spaces under the bridge, and (c) the twice-daily rising tides from Bray Harbour which spill upriver into the newly expanded basin.

 

To create proper foundations for the columns, the guys are having to drive steel piles deep into the bed of the river. Similar to work done elsewhere. Within that waterproof chamber, they set/poured concrete to build the columns.

 

This pile driving work here involves a sub-contractor using an excavator-mounted vibratory pile driver – possibly a ‘Movax’ model. That’s the combination they used in 2014 with the work opposite La Vallee.

 

Very delicate work - pick up, adjust grip, swivel, align, interlink with previous pile, and then drive downwards.

 

Trench Control – BANKSMAN.

 

According to standard HSA guidelines, a ‘BANKSMAN’ is defined in civil engineering terms as:

“A banksman (a trained slinger* and signaller) must always be used where loads are lifted and safe direction is given to operators of lifting appliances. The banksman directing a crane’s movements should be easily identifiable to the crane operator (eg, by the wearing of uniquely identifiable high-visibility clothing and/or the use of radio call signs).

The duties of a slinger/signaller include:

• Carrying out visual pre-use checks of the lifting accessories

• Attaching the load to the crane correctly and in accordance with the lifting plan

• Giving the appropriate signals to the crane operator for the lifting, transferring and positing of loads in a safe manner

• Detaching the load from the crane

• Ensuring that the lifting accessories are stored correctly and reporting any defects

As well as testing the integrity of the access bridge (some pretty large tree trunks floated down river in the floods), openings had to be made in the banks to allow the release of water from the channel being repaired.

The meain reason for visiting Cambridge was to see King's College Chapel.

 

I must first than two friends, Simon K and Aidan for posting shots from Cambridge and so firing up my desire to visit.

 

Things fell into place and I found myself on a train last Sunday, and a place on the first tour of the day Monday morning.

 

I will add more thoughts as I post shots, but this for a start.

 

Quite the strongest emotional response I have ever had to a building, I had to choke back tears!

 

All chairs and seating have been removed, so there is just the building.

 

"Just."

 

Just a handful of us early visitors had the entire chapel to ourselves.

Begun by Henry VI, completed under the direction of Henry VII, the glass scheme installed under the somewhat-disinterested Henry VIII. 'The heart and soul of early 20th Century Anglicanism' according to M R James, the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols begun here during the First World War helped invent the modern Christmas. The fan vaulting is spectacular, the proportions (300ft long, 40ft wide, 90ft high) almost shocking in their single-minded Perpendicular triumphalism. The Chapel vies with Ely and Peterborough Cathedrals as the best single medieval building in Cambridgeshire, but the vast scheme of early 16th Century glass is undoubtedly the biggest and best of its kind anywhere in the British Isles.

King's College Chapel is the chapel of King's College in the University of Cambridge. It is considered one of the finest examples of late Perpendicular Gothic English architecture and features the world's largest fan vault.[3] The Chapel was built in phases by a succession of kings of England from 1446 to 1515, a period which spanned the Wars of the Roses and three subsequent decades. The Chapel's large stained glass windows were completed by 1531, and its early Renaissance rood screen was erected in 1532–36. The Chapel is an active house of worship, and home of the King's College Choir. It is a landmark and a commonly used symbol of the city of Cambridge.

 

Henry VI planned a university counterpart to Eton College (whose Chapel is very similar, but not on the scale intended by Henry). The King decided the dimensions of the Chapel. Reginald Ely was most likely the architect and worked on the site since 1446.[6] Two years earlier Reginald was charged with sourcing craftsmen for the Chapel's construction.[6] He continued to work on the site until building was interrupted in 1461, having probably designed the elevations.[6] The original plans called for lierne vaulting, and the piers of the choir were built to conform with them.[6] Ultimately, a complex fan vault was constructed instead.[6] Reginald probably designed the window tracery at the extreme east of the church's north side: the east window of the easternmost side chapel, which unlike the Perpendicular style of the others is in curvilinear Gothic style.[6] The priest and later bishop Nicholas Close (or Cloos) was recorded as the "surveyor", having been the curate of St John Zachary, a church demolished to make way for the Chapel.[7][8][9]

 

The first stone of the Chapel was laid, by Henry himself, on the Feast of St James the Apostle, 25 July 1446, the College having been begun in 1441. By the end of the reign of Richard III (1485), despite the Wars of the Roses, five bays had been completed and a timber roof erected. Henry VII visited in 1506, paying for the work to resume and even leaving money so that the work could continue after his death. In 1515, under Henry VIII, the building was complete but the great windows had yet to be made.

 

The Chapel features the world's largest fan vault, constructed between 1512 and 1515 by master mason John Wastell. It also features fine medieval stained glass and, above the altar, The Adoration of the Magi by Rubens, painted in 1634 for the Convent of the White Nuns at Louvain in Belgium. The painting was installed in the Chapel in 1968; this involved the lowering of the Sanctuary floor leading up to the High Altar. It had been believed that gradations were created in 1774 by James Essex, when Essex had in fact lowered the floor by 5 1/2 inches,[10] but at the demolition of these steps, it was found that the floor instead rested on Tudor brick arches.

 

During the removal of these Tudor steps, built at the Founder's specific request that the high altar should be 3 ft above the choir floor, human remains in intact lead coffins with brass plaques were discovered, dating from the 15th to 18th centuries, and were disinterred.[12]

 

The eventual installation of the Rubens was also not without problems: once seen beneath the east window, a conflict was felt between the picture's swirling colours and those of the stained glass.[13][title missing] The Rubens was also a similar shape to the window, which "dwarfed it and made it look rather like a dependent postage stamp".[14] Plain shutters were proposed, one on each side, to give it a triptych shape (although the picture was never part of a triptych) and lend it independence of form, which is how one sees the Rubens today. The installation was designed by architect Sir Martyn Beckett, who was "philosophical about the furore this inevitably occasioned - which quickly became acceptance of a solution to a difficult problem."[15]

 

During the Civil War the Chapel was used as a training ground by Oliver Cromwell's troops, but escaped major damage, possibly because Cromwell, having been a Cambridge student, gave orders for it to be spared. Graffiti left by these soldiers is still visible on the north and south walls near the altar.[16] During World War II most of the stained glass was removed and the Chapel again escaped damage.[17]

These images were taken during the last week of January, 2016. Out for a walk through the People's Park. Whilst I'd taken a break from the day-to-day activities involved in the engineering works along this particular section of the river, these images were a quick record of work.

Now a days almost all the divisional workshops are painting their fleet in blood Red colour while the CWs are painting new buses in a bit orangy shade.

The following sequences show how the guys reinforced the river bed/bank: spreading out, and stitching in a membrane, layout out wire creels, filled with medium sized stones, welded shut, and laid out in grids, particularly the sections alongside the road/bank side.
