California ISO Headquarters, Dreyfuss & Blackford Architects. #wedesignedthis

The California Independent System Operator moved into their new headquarters campus, ahead of schedule and right on budget. This was a visionary project for the non-profit ISO, which manages the electrical grid for the entire state of California. The over-arching goal in the new facility was to create a secure, innovative and energy efficient headquarters complex. A further design goal was to enhance the work environment so that California ISO becomes the “employer of choice” for engineering and technical staff in the region.

The site is a pristine, gently rolling savannah with a glade of nearly 100 native oaks. We carefully nestled the building into the natural site, preserving the native oak trees. Generous native landscape areas were also preserved and incorporated as passive security setbacks for the facility.

The complex was designed with three separate building elements: a wing for public functions, a wing for administrative offices, and a wing housing the essential services “mission critical” operations. A striking central lobby serves as a hub, linking the building elements, providing way-finding and security screening.

To demonstrate leadership by example, the project placed an emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability and in July 2011 earned a LEED Platinum rating – the highest rating possible - from the US Green Building Council. The building is designed with a particular focus on achieving energy efficiency and is projected to operate nearly 40% more efficiently than California’s restrictive Title 24 standards with nearly 20% of it’s annual power consumption being supplied by renewable energy from on-site photovoltaic arrays.

Pendragon's last scheduled full tour was cut short by Covid just after I'd seen them at Trading bOundaries in 2020. Picking up where they left off, Nick Barrett took his band of merry men & women out again in 2023 to promote both the North Star EP and the last full album, Love over Fear. The set contained some old favourites too such as Paint Box, Indigo and Green & Pleasant Land which ensure happy punters all round! Another great gig and great night at TB.

A flower alongside the footpath outside the remains of Kenilworth Castle in Kenilworth, Warwickshire. It was first constructed in Norman times and updated through to Tudor times, the castle has been described by architectural historian Anthony Emery as "the finest surviving example of a semi-royal palace of the later middle ages, significant for its scale, form and quality of workmanship".

Kenilworth has also played an important historical role. The castle was the subject of the six-month long Siege of Kenilworth in 1266, believed to be the longest siege in English history, and formed a base for Lancastrian operations in the War of the Roses. Kenilworth was also the scene of the removal of Edward II from the English throne, the French insult to Henry V in 1414 (said by John Strecche to have encouraged the Agincourt campaign), and the Earl of Leicester's lavish reception of Elizabeth I in 1575.

The castle was built over several centuries. Founded in the 1120s around a powerful Norman great tower, the castle was significantly enlarged by King John at the beginning of the 13th century. Huge water defences were created by damming the local streams and the resulting fortifications proved able to withstand assaults by land and water in 1266. John of Gaunt spent lavishly in the late 14th century, turning the medieval castle into a palace fortress designed in the latest perpendicular style. The Earl of Leicester then expanded the castle once again, constructing new Tudor buildings and exploiting the medieval heritage of Kenilworth to produce a fashionable Renaissance palace.

Kenilworth was partly destroyed by Parliamentary forces in 1649 to prevent it being used as a military stronghold. Ruined, only two of its buildings remain habitable today. The castle became a tourist destination from the 18th century onwards, becoming famous in the Victorian period following the publishing of Sir Walter Scott's novel Kenilworth in 1826. English Heritage has managed the castle since 1984. The castle is classed as a Grade I listed building and as a Scheduled Monument, and is open to the public.

"The Marché aux fleurs Reine-Elizabeth-II is a flower market in Paris. It was formerly known as the Marché aux fleurs et aux oiseaux Cité but was renamed for Queen Elizabeth II after a state visit in 2014.

It sells caged birds on Sundays but this trade has been forbidden on the grounds of animal welfare and so is expected to cease after a period of renovation and reorganisation scheduled from 2023 to 2025.

The 4th arrondissement of Paris (IVe arrondissement) is one of the twenty arrondissements of the capital city of France. In spoken French, this arrondissement is referred to as quatrième. Along with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd arrondissements, it is in the first sector of Paris, which maintains a single local government rather than four separate ones.

The arrondissement, also known as Hôtel-de-Ville, is situated on the right bank of the River Seine. It contains the Renaissance-era Paris City Hall, rebuilt between 1874 and 1882. The 4th arrondissement is known for its little streets, cafés, and shops but is often regarded by Parisians as expensive and congested. It has old buildings and a mix of many cultures.

Paris (French pronunciation: [paʁi]) is the capital and most populous city of France, with an estimated population of 2,150,271 residents as of 2020, in an area of 105 square kilometres (41 square miles). Since the 17th century, Paris has been one of Europe's major centres of finance, diplomacy, commerce, fashion, science and arts. The City of Paris is the centre and seat of government of the Île-de-France, or Paris Region, which has an estimated official 2020 population of 12,278,210, or about 18 percent of the population of France. The Paris Region had a GDP of €709 billion ($808 billion) in 2017. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit Worldwide Cost of Living Survey in 2018, Paris was the second most expensive city in the world, after Singapore, and ahead of Zürich, Hong Kong, Oslo and Geneva. Another source ranked Paris as most expensive, on a par with Singapore and Hong Kong, in 2018.

The historical district along the Seine in the city centre is classified as a UNESCO Heritage Site, and popular landmarks in the city centre included the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, on the Île de la Cité, now closed for renovation after the 15 April 2019 fire. Other popular tourist sites include the Gothic royal chapel of Sainte-Chapelle, also on the Île de la Cité; the Eiffel Tower, constructed for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1889; the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, built for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1900; the Arc de Triomphe on the Champs-Élysées, and the Basilica of Sacré-Coeur on the hill of Montmartre.

Paris received 38 million visitors in 2019, measured by hotel stays, with the largest numbers of foreign visitors coming from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and China. It was ranked as the second most visited travel destination in the world in 2019, after Bangkok and just ahead of London. The football club Paris Saint-Germain and the rugby union club Stade Français are based in Paris. The 80,000-seat Stade de France, built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, is located just north of Paris in the neighbouring commune of Saint-Denis. Paris hosts the annual French Open Grand Slam tennis tournament on the red clay of Roland Garros. The city hosted the Olympic Games in 1900, 1924 and will host the 2024 Summer Olympics. 2013 Warrior Country 10K by U.S. Army Garrison Casey

The event was scheduled to be a 10K cross country run; unfortunately Area I weather of late has damaged the course so nearly 60 runners took to the roads of Camps Casey and Hovey on July 27.

On hand to make the award presentations was the Commander of 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion Lt. Col. Mark Danner.

Even though this was an individual competition, Danner could see the fellowship among the runners and he liked what he saw during the contest.

“Esprit de corps… fosters unit pride… we can’t ask for anything more for our Soldiers,” said Danner. “This is an example of what we’re all about here in the 2nd Infantry Division.”

Walled Garden at Baddesley Clinton - flowers by Elliott Brown

A second visit to Baddesley Clinton (in around 8 years). Saw the garden again, but this time went into the house for the first time.

Baddesley Clinton is a moated manor house, located some 8 miles (13 km) north-west of the historic town of Warwick in the English county of Warwickshire. The house probably originated in the 13th century, when large areas of the Forest of Arden were cleared for farmland. The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and the hall a Grade I listed building.

In 1438, John Brome, Under-Treasurer of England, bought the manor, which passed to his son, Nicholas. Nicholas was responsible for the extensive rebuilding of the nearby parish church dedicated to St Michael, done as penance for killing the parish priest, a murder reputed to have taken place in the great house itself. The house from this period was equipped with gun-ports, and possibly a drawbridge. When Nicholas Brome died in 1517, the house passed to his daughter, who married Sir Edward Ferrers (High Sheriff of Warwickshire) in 1500. The house remained with the Ferrers family until 1940, when it was purchased by Thomas Walker, a relative of the family who changed his name to Ferrers. His son, who inherited it in 1970, sold the estate in 1980 to the National Trust, which now manages it.

Henry Ferrers "The Antiquary" (1549–1633) made many additions to Baddesley Clinton, including starting the tradition of stained glass representing the family's coat of arms. Such glass now appears in many of the public rooms in the house. It is thought that he was responsible for building the great hall. In the 18th century the great hall was rebuilt in brick, and the east range was extended, though with great care to continue the style of the original building.

The house was inhabited in the 1860s by the novelists Georgiana Chatterton and her second husband Edward Heneage Dering, both of whom converted to Catholicism. The house's Catholic chapel was rebuilt, along with a general refurbishment of the house. Major interior changes took place up until the 1940s, with the first floor outside the chapel being completely altered. The house as it now exists has extensive formal gardens and ponds, with many of the farm buildings dating back to the 18th century. St Michael's church, which shares much history with the house, is a few hundred yards up a lane. Inside the house are a beautiful great hall, parlour and library, amongst other rooms, and there is a great deal of 16th century carving and furniture to be seen, as well as the 19th century accessories the later inhabitants used.
