The calmly flowing waters of a swollen Kickapoo Creek gently touch the concrete footings currently supporting the passage of this heavy, 131-car, southbound Union Pacific coal drag as its two, lead, AC six-axles ride their dynamic brakes, coasting downhill across a combination deck plate and lattice through truss bridge along the former C&NW "SI Line" outside Bartonville on a gloomy July morning. This train of loaded aluminum BethGons -- symbol CNAPW 14 -- are topped out with over 18,000 tons Wyoming's finest black diamonds; Filled at Peabody's North Antelope Mine in the state's rich Powder River Basin, these hoppers have only a few short miles left to travel before reaching their destination at NRG Energy's Powerton Generating Station near Pekin. The train will soon cross the Illinois River drawbridge and immediately make a right turn onto the IMRR and down into Crescent Yard for interchange where they'll tie down and the loads will wait for an Illinois & Midland crew to spot the cars at the plant for final dumping. Slated for decommission come the end of 2028 due to the country's relentless insistence on "cleaner" energy alternatives, Powerton is the sole remaining, actively burning coal-fired power plant to still remain standing in the greater Peoria area, outliving the facilities at Havana, Hennepin and Canton's Duck Creek (2019), and eventually the E.D. Edwards Station at Bartonville (2022). Once closed, it'll be another major hit in activity levels for a route that is already down in traffic. Twice weekly scheduled manifest service between Peoria and Clinton, IA, as needed coal, grain and ethanol unit traffic, and seasonal ballast trains are pretty much the bulk of what traverses this line.
For southbounds, this is the final, and most dramatic, crossing atop a snaky Kickapoo Creek which twists and turns beneath the rails of the Peoria Subdivision in six different locations within just about a short, two mile stretch of track. Just about a half mile back from this bridge, the train is still working through the CTC controlled interlocking at "Peoria JCT" where the Peoria Sub main to South Pekin splits from UP's "Low Line," which routes trains for Peoria area interchange into and out of their small Adams St. Yard just a short distance away on the city's southwest side. The single-tracked Peoria Subdivision, which runs south out of Nelson away from the busy Geneva Sub, uses a combination of CTC, TWC and ABS infrastructure to route what little traffic runs down this line and is also the only class 1 of four that has a "through route" through the city. A line that does not get much attention from photographers, an older "winged" EMD SD70ACe on the point of a well timed coal load just was enough for me to grab the camera and quickly pick it off at this very seldom shot location.
I sure could do without that walkway.

In September 2015, I was scouting out and photographing numerous sites around Lake Tahoe, California and many sites in the Eastern Sierras for a short 5 days.
One the night of September 17, I took the Bonsai Rock Milky Way shot with the moon just above the distant mountain peaks.
The next day we moved down into the Eastern Sierras where I had been planning to photograph the iconic bristlecone pine tree with the Milky Way. Little did I know on the way down how well the moon would come into play with my night sky photography work there.
I used a long established technique to get the moon rays in this shoot while I light painted the bristlecone pine tree with my special light.
In 2017, I will have two 5 day Milky Way photography workshop in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, one over the 3rd week in March and one over the 3rd week in April.
During each of the two workshops, I will conduct 3 4+ hour Milky Way Photoshop post processing session where I teach all the techniques I used to create this final photo but this time it will be more of what is called a "Deep Dive" PS post processing session and workshop participants will need a laptop with Photoshop CS 2017. Lightroom will work but lacks some functionality used in what I will teach.

February 26th, 2022 marked the second to last day of normal operation on the Chicago South Shore’s famous 1.8 mile stretch of street running on 10th and 11th streets in Michigan City Indiana. The railroad and the community have shared this stretch of roadway since 1908, and over the past 114 years much has changed. Michigan City and the surrounding areas have changed, the railroad has changed and modernized with the times, but one of the things that, for the most part, has stayed relatively the same is the presence of the Chicago South Shore & South Bend railroad and its interurban and freight trains running down the middle of the streets. The community and railroad have coexisted fairly well over the past 114 years considering trains and motorists share the same piece of roadway and the proximity of homes and businesses to the railroad.
However, change is inevitable whether we like it or not I guess, and soon the famous street running will be significantly altered. The streets will close and vehicle traffic will be detoured onto alternate routes. Interurban passenger service will use buses to bridge this stretch of railroad, and freight traffic will mostly run at night. Once the $500 million project is complete the vehicle traffic will return to a new one-way road, the interurban passenger and freight trains will once again run on a more normal schedule but will return to a new double track main through town. The project is designed to help with congestion, efficiency, and safety through Michigan City. But at the same time it comes at a loss of the famous street running that was a time capsule glimpse back into a forgotten era of railroading over 100 years ago.
As the sun dips down close to the horizon on this late February day, a pair of CSS SD38-2s run light down 10th street, as people from all over flocked to Michigan City to document the final moves of normal operations down what could be the most famous stretch of street running left in North America.
Landing on late afternonn, scheduled flight as AirBerlin from Berlin (TXL) to Milan (LIN).

Last night was the annual Million Mask March through central London. After the troubles last year, such as the burning of a police car there were a lot more police on the streets, and they were much more assertive in dealing with protesters.
The red lines on this guy are focus beams from a TV camera outside the van. I couldn't help thinking it looked like the Terminator had tracked him down!
The final scheduled Deltic departure from King's Cross 40 years ago today is seen at its penultimate stop as the service was terminated on arrival at Grantham due to a broken rail. After running round the stock it formed a 18.58 Grantham - King's Cross but this was terminated at Knebworth due to wheelslip problems and ran ecs to King's Cross assisted by 47 426.
This Friday & Saturday (16&17th of May!!! I'll be spinning on Saturday at 11 am. Don't miss it. Can't wait to see you all \o/.

a heavy travel schedule this week left only one chance to go trig hunting, luckily the weather on Saturday was good.
Axe Edge Moor is the major peat moorland, west of Buxton in the Peak District. The moor is the source of the River Dove, River Manifold, River Dane, River Wye and River Goyt.
The summit at Axe Edge is marked by this trig, close to the source of the Dove.
I'm one day behind my initial schedule, but I'll be in NYC by tomorrow morning.
I don't know if I'll have internet, so if I don't update, know that eventually I will.

Just as my life would be full of rescued critters if I had the time and space... my garden's full of rescued plants... a small handful of which I salvaged after a friend moved houses last summer. They'd been neglected in pots on a patio, and were quite near death.
I've got all but one of them revived and planted... out of pots, so their roots can spread. But the last little guy is still waiting. He's a very unhealthy boxwood. And... frankly... I can't find a space in my yard for such a sad lone specimen. I mentioned this to a friend the other day, and she suggested keeping it potted... and cutting it back into something that, some day, might resemble an interesting shape. "You could do your first topiary plant," she said. And it is an idea... but it's just not me.
This is the only kind of topiary I'll ever make - an imaginary one.
Doesn`t seem possible but we`ve reached the fortieth anniversary of the first scheduled withdrawals of RM`s from front line service. A landmark day in Routemaster history for being the unfortunate - and some would say unjustified - result of a policy designed to promote greater use of public transport being undermined by a minority.
The schedule changes of 4 September 1982 removed over two hundred RM`s and caused a massive cascade of vehicle transfers (of all types) all around the fleet. I spent so much of my spare time in the preceding weeks attempting (and succeeding) to capture on film every one of the Leyland RM`s destined for withdrawal and many of the other RM`s that moved location such as here at Leyton Garage where I visited forty years ago today - 3 September 1982 - and found RM`s 541 and 375 de-blinded and ready for transfer to Peckham.
...for at least 30 years at this long abandoned farmhouse in Iowa.

Visited my dentist this morning and, as is customary, we scheduled the next two visits. How's March 20th? Sure. And the one after that, June 22? Wow! We are discussing June already? I just put away my Santa hat and soon I'll be sitting outdoors wearing a straw western hat. Wish I could slow down the passage of time. When we were kids summer breaks went on forever. Now they feel like they last as long as just a couple of weekends. This pic is from 2022 and I had to double check the date because I could've sworn it was taken this past September, which was just a couple of weekends ago. Wasn't it?
And now, back to our regularly scheduled program! After my previous street photo upload, I'm happily back to long exposure monochromes! Only 3 days ago, I was writing about how, lately, I've had no patience for processing and, all of a sudden, I'm back in the game. Funny how these things work!
This week, I've suddenly rediscovered why I just adore b&w photography. There's just such an amazing emotion that is evoked when I look at a really good b&w photo. Yea, I dabble in the odd colour image or two when I'm feeling a little stale, but b&w is really where it's at for me.
This image is probably one of the darker ones I've done and it's inspired by one of the best b&w photographers around these parts - Andy Brown. He is the king of the dark moody monochrome. Do check out his work if you can.

Our parkade was scheduled for cleaning so I had to be out early. I decided to head just West of the city to see what I could. I did see a few bluebirds but was delighted when a Great Gray Owl perched itself beside the highway!

A Scheduled Ancient Monument and probably the oldest bridge to cross the River Stour is reputedly also the oldest bridge in Dorset, but who knows!
What is known are references to the building of "A Bridge on the River Stour adjacent to the White Mill" in the year 1175 and that during an investigation of the foundations on which it stands, there are timber pilings which have been carbon dated to the twelfth century. There is also a record from 1341 showing three shillings bequeathed for bridge repairs.
The basic construction of what you see here, somewhat updated by the Victorians and again repaired in more recent times, probably dates from the 16th century.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

The overnight schedules of the CN pair of Centralia to TRRA locals have gotten out of whack lately with many of the trains dying somewhere on the St. Louis Subdivision. As you can see, the 8 inches of recent snow are no longer a cause! The IC SD70 fleet continues to make appearances as well with the IC 1024 leading the L548 on this day. Big train of nearly 115 cars bound for the TRRA. Some of the extra power is bound for STL area repair shops (Quality Rail, MEI) but the 1024 was definitely putting in some work.

Startrail, single-shot, one hour exposure, taken at night close to the northeast walls of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Dolomites), Italy.
Therefore my camera was pointed towards southwest. When you almost turn your back to the Polaris you get all these "parallel" lines, which are the trails of starlight recorded by the camera while the Earth rotates to the east.
I've been waiting to have the Milky Way completely shifted to the west, because, as I've already written some time ago, I do not like to see the light trail of our galaxy included in a strar trail, it is just a matter of personal taste of course, but I think it only generates confusion. Therefore, when my schedule and weather conditions allow, I definitely prefer to wait for the right time before to start such a demanding exposure.
It is only necessary to calculate that the exposure ends enough time before the appearance of the first faint light before the dawn.
All my startrails are always the result of one single exposure.
I want to have the shot in camera in the moment I leave the place I've visited, just to be sure I've really got what I was looking for.
So it is paramount to find out the perfect spot where to fix the equipment. It must be an area shielded by winds.
Fortunately in this alpine pass, always exposed to the winds, there are also some huge stones (taller than a person) that turned out to be very useful to protect my camera and tripod from any kind of vibration during the long exposure.
I've never particularly loved the startrails, and, telling the truth, neither I do now... anyhow, presently I have at my active 183 night shots, plus many other pending publication, so, the fact of coming out occasionally with a startrail, well, I guess is pratically statistically inevitable :-)
Actually, this shot comes from a very simple feeling: I was mounting my tent for the night, it was pitch black, with rather strong wind, so the process took a little more time than usual. Time to time I was watching these walls, huge, looming... beautiful, yes, but also somehow disturbing... black huge blocks of stone, ominous... a vision light years different from what you can see on a typical sunny day!
That's when I began to think about a possible startrail, in black and white, where these black monsters would have contrasted with the shining light of the cosmos. Huge mountains, dark, hopeless, death... pervaded by a cosmic breath of glorious otherworldly light.

In an attempt to get myself reantiquated with my work sleep schedule after a week off, I woke early yesterday to go shoot sunrise. Luck would find me at the Kenosha Pierhead lighthouse where I snapped arguably my best shot of the year. What a way to ring in the final month of 2024. A nippy -2 wind chill was not ideal, a long thaw in my car took place after I finished here.

Synopsis
Kei Kitami # who is aiming for a university # meets Kaori Uemura # an event companion who is 6 years older than her on SNS.
Kaori's dream of coming to Tokyo is to become friends with famous artists.
For that purpose # the presence of radio station producer Ryo Osawa was necessary.
Osawa talks to Kaori during the live radio broadcast.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

I apologize for the break in uploads of the series. I suffered a crash of my laptop's 1 TB storage HDD and had to run a recovery for days to try to restore access. Bud has been coming the past few days around supper time - he is already on the fall schedule - the squirrels and chippies love to share in the treats!
It was a bit haze night to see the cityscape from Twin Peak with the Embarcadero center holiday lights but no "mini star" on top of the Transamerica. I have to wait till this weekend. Do you know when will they turn on the light on Transamerica schedule?

Built in Bergen 1904.
Pre war history: Delivered in Sept.-1904 from Bergens Mek. Værksted, Solheimsviken, Bergen as Stavenes to Nordre Bergenhus Amts Dampskibe, Bergen. Steel hull reinforced for travel through ice, rounded bow, 104,6’ x 20,1’ x 9,8’, 181 gt, Tripple Expansion 49nhk 237ihk. Used in regularly scheduled service in Dalsfjord and Førdesfjord in Sunnfjord, occasionally in Nordfjord and around Florø. During the wintertime in the period 1904-1909 she carried mail Gudvangen-Lærdal in inner Sogn. In regularly scheduled service Florø-Måløy-Nordfjordeid-Sandane, summer of 1912. On Jan. 25-1919 the owning company changed its name to Fylkesbaatane i Sogn & Fjordane, Bergen. Rebuilt in 1934; could now carry 7-8 cars and at the same time she got electricity and a covered wheelhouse. Used as ferry Lærdal-Vadheim in inner Sogn every summer.
POST WAR: For several years after the war Stavenes was in the tourist trade Flåm-Balestrand-Fjærland in the summertime, then in service Lustrafjorden-Årdal and Flåm-Gudvangen in the wintertime. Rebuilt at Frydenbø Slip & Mek. Verksted, Damsgård in Bergen, spring 1954. Converted to motor vessel with a 6cyl 2tev Weddop 300bhk (1942), 10 knots, then in 1957 with a 2tev Normo dm 350bhk (1957). Ran aground on Dec. 23-1958 near Ortnevik in Sogn, refloated herself, no damages. Later placed in the local Bergen-Gulen-Solund-Hyllestad route in outer Sogn. Ran aground in Nov.-1960 south of Bakkastraumen in Nordhordland county. The floating library vessel Abdullah took the passengers to Bergen. Refloated by salvage vessel Salvator the next morning. Laid up at some point in the 1960's, then in the summer of 1969 she was hired out (with some adjustments) for use in the film "Song of Norway", filmed in Gudvangen, Aurland, Olden and Geiranger, then laid up again. Sold in Dec.-1972 to J. Graham Kew, Rugby for use as a yacht. Not long afterwards she visited western Norway with the American Jeffrey A. Hoffmann as skipper, later astronaut for NASA.
Following the death of her owner she was laid up at Grimsby for 3 years and fell into a bad state of repair. Taken over at some point in the 1970's by The Monks Ferry Training Trust, Birkenhead. Placed in drydock in Port Penryth, northern Wales with the intent of fixing her up using unemployed workers. All interior was removed and some alterations made before the project stranded and she continued to fall into bad state of repair. After a while the dock was to be torn down so Stavenes had to be removed. A politician in Liverpool helped prevent her from being broken up.
In Jan.-1990 Sigmund and Jarle Lomelde from Sogn went to England to see if she could be preserved, then in Oct. that year she was also examined by people from Fylkesbaatane and from Sogndal Utviklingsselskap. Taken over by Veteranskipslaget Stavenes, Kaupanger in May-1991 for restoration back to her 1930's appearance, and towed from Liverpool to Solund that same month. That summer a new deck was installed and her diesel engine removed, laid up in Kaupanger where she sank in the winter of 1994 due to large amounts of snow. Raised, a temporary roof installed across her entire length. In 1998 the owners purchased a suitable steam engine from a condemned Swedish tug (engine was built in Jönköping in 1893). Additionally, a suitable boiler was obtained from Måløy Sildoljefabrikk (herring oil factory). In 200o she was still laid up in Kinsedal, Lustrafjord.
(All details on this vessel received from T. Eriksen, Norway - his sources: "Fjordabåten" by Dag Bakka Jr., 1994, "Bergenske Fjordabåter" Dag Bakka Jr. for Bergens Tidende, 1974 and "101 Fjordabåtar, FSF 1858-2000" by Magnus Helge Torvanger 2000).
