Had a talk with my old man
Said, "Help me understand"
He said "Turn 68, oh, you'll re-negotiate"
"Don't stop this train"
Don't for a minute change the place you're in
And don't think I couldn't ever understand
I tried my hand
John, honestly we'll never stop this train"
Cause now I see, I'm never gonna stop this train
Never gonna stop this train.
Stop This Train - John Mayer / Where The Light Is (Live in Los Angeles), Cd 1 / (2008)

I have always lived in houses, which were very close to the sea and also very close there was a railway line. I have always liked to see a train pass or hear its sound. When I was little and left school, we would go to the railways, close to home, to throw stones at the freight wagons of the freight trains that came down and brought salt from the Súria and Cardona mines, to be loaded onto ships in the port of Barcelona. In addition to throwing stones at it, we counted the number of wagons the locomotive was carrying. Possibly, this train loaded with salt, its schedule was around 1 noon and not at 2:10, like the song written by Albertano and sung with that special voice by Taj Mahal, whom I consider the best bluesman, with permission from B.B. King.
We spend a part of our childhood on the railroad tracks, between abandoned wagons and freight trains. And the port and the sea in summer. Unforgettable days.
There was a day, when several locomotives united, transported many wagons. We count more than a hundred. They seem like a lot to me, but the mind of a child, when he is a child, is a little messy. They talk and think in such a way that it seems they are a little crazy. But they are not. I don't know if it was really more than a hundred wagons that we counted. Possibly we miscounted. But that day... that day was a truly unforgettable "orgy" of stone throwing.
On this railway line, some people died who did not hear the locomotive arrive. And even some person committed suicide, stretched out on the tracks while the railroad came at full speed, without the possibility of stopping. While i'm listening to "Mystery Train" by The Neville Brothers, with this lilting rhythm, imitating the sound of a railway, I remember the kind locomotive driver, who when he saw us, he would sound the train's horn, say hello to us and reduce the speed of the locomotive, so that we had more time to throw stones. We were not hooligans. We were just... children playing .
Never let a train get away from you. And much less, those trains that suddenly appear and cross our lives. Get on all the trains you find, even if they are mysterious... because life is a mystery train, you never know where it will take you.
.....
Cause now I see, I'm never gonna stop this train
Never gonna stop this train.
Well I woke up this morning and the sun refused to shine.
Til I hear the 2:10 train.

The Austonian held the crown of tallest building in Austin for nine years until The Independent surpassed it by only seven feet in 2019. Located at 200 Congress Ave., the 683-foot tall, 56-story building is a modern architectural icon in this rapidly growing city.
This post modern skyscraper was designed by Ziegler Cooper Architects of Houston. At the time of its completion in 2010, the Austrian was both the tallest building in Austin, and the tallest residential skyscraper in the United States west of the Mississippi River. Both distinctions are now held by The Independent, although another downtown Austin tower, Sixth and Guadalupe and still under construction, has already topped out at its final height of 865-feet and is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2023.
Austin is the capital of the State of Texas, as well as the seat of Travis County. With a population of just under one million residents, Austin is the 11th largest city in the United States. The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos Metropolitan Area, now with a population of 2.3M, is one of the fastest growing large metropolitan areas in the country having added more than 579,000 residents since 2010.
A different take on this encounter.
On our last night in the Grand Teton National Park, I had scheduled for us to be at Schwbacher’s Landing at sunset. This was the first location we visited prior to making our way up to Yellowstone NP a few days before. We shot this location at sunrise (I still haven’t posted any of those images) but I really wanted to see what kind of light I would get at this time of day.
I was actually shooting the scene of the mountain range about 30 yards down to the right when I decided I had enough of that spot and that we should head back a little to get a few more compositions from back closer to the trailhead. As we were shooting, a single moose came out of the pine trees and walked all the way to the marsh in front of us (about 20 yards away!) and those amazing sunset rays were peaking over the range.
Snow + Sunrays + Moose = Jackpot! We saw in total five moose on our few days in the park and it really made our trip. This was our first time seeing them in the wild. The others were all males with big antlers over near the Gros Ventre area. That is a story for another day.

Led by a former Conrail SD40-2, M426 rounds the curve by the Readfield bog on their way east to Waterville. While the current schedule is about as good as it can be for an eastbound on District 1, the excessive brush growth in recent years makes it somewhat frustrating to find open spots, with this spot in Readfield being about the best available.
ENG: The underground station "Rotes Rathaus" is one of the two newest open underground stations in the Berlin district Mitte of the same name. It is part of the extension of the U5 underground line from Hönow deep in the east of the city beyond Alexanderplatz to Brandenburg Gate and on to the terminus at Hauptbahnhof. The construction had its ground-breaking ceremony in 2010 and it has now been ceremoniously opened on 4 December 2020 at 12 noon. The second new station also opened on 4 December and is called "Unter den Linden". The third and last new station will then be called "Museumsinsel" and is scheduled to open in mid-2021.

Oktober 2021).
At Fahlenbach, the Munich-Nuremberg-Express RE 4023 already slowed down to make its scheduled stop at the nearby Rohrbach station. The Škoda set with 102 006 as the locomotive still looks somewhat unusual on German rails and will probably also retain an exotic status due to various problems in service (01 October 2021).

The express train R 768 ‘Berounka’ from Praha hl.n. to Železná Ruda-Alžbětín runs from Klatovy with a class 754 diesel locomotive. 754.058 in the so-called Najbrt design 1.1 was scheduled for this task on 27 October 2024. This colour scheme was used on the ČD between 2008 and 2011. Shortly after leaving Zelená Lhota station, I was able to take this train in front of colourful deciduous trees in the soft afternoon light.
Moelfre is a village, a commuity and until 2012 an electoral ward on the north-east coast of the Isle of Anglesey in Wales.
The community area covers the village and the harbour, and several smaller dispersed settlements. It includes six scheduled Iron Age hut groups and many other sites of archaeological interest.
As soon as spring arrives, the sheep invade the foreshore to come and taste the halophilic plants. The sea flora charged with salt and iodine, combined with the long displacements, gives this so particular taste to the flesh of the lambs, very appreciated by the experts.
Taking the sheep to graze in the foreshore is a local tradition attested since at least the 15th century. Lambing takes place in the sheepfold during the winter, although some farmers schedule births in the spring to avoid supply shortages. For the first two or three months after birth, the lambs are fed mainly on their mother's milk. The animals are taken out in March after the high tides of the equinox and stay in the bay for a minimum of two and a half months, extending into the autumn.
To recap, on 25 Oct. 2024, I joined a small caving party to explore a world famous cave system, situated in Mulu, Sarawak, Borneo; with an excellent guide from Sarawak's last remaining nomadic tribe, the Penan.
However, after an initial visit to Deer Cave and the exploration schedule, to prepare better, we first decided to visit the Borneo Cultures Museum, and Bako National Park, at nearby Kuching, the capital of Sarawak: Malaysia's northern most State, and next to Sabah, home of the giant apes (the orangutans).
But with this shot , the photo series on this unusual journey kicks off with the entry point to the first of the four amazing caves involved: The Deer Cave
Deer Cave was named thus by local tribes, because of deer being there a lot to suck salt from bat guano.
The four caves were seen over 2 days:
Day 1: Deer Cave & Lang Cave
Day 2: Wind Cave & Clearwater Cave
To recap more: these caves are a key part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Deer Cave is over 2 km long and has the world's largest cave passage. The main chamber is 174m /571 feet wide, and 122m / 400 feet, high.
The four caves are accessed by boardwalks, and rock and wooden stairs, built by Sarawak State Government.
The Sarawak limestone mountain range is honeycombed with underground caverns and rivers (the latter best seen at Clearwater Cave), giving rise to the world's most extensive cave systems.
In the mini series following we focus only on Deer Cave as the most attractive cave to display in photo form, with the series concluding with the an exit photo of some reputed two million bats, which live in the caves (but hard to see sleeping during the day), flying out of Deer Cave at dusk tp search for insects to eat.

VIA Nº29, the last westbound out of Quebec City's Gare du Palais leaves Daveluyville behind, pulling the last British built Metro-Cammell Renaissance equipment in use in the Corridor with two F40PH-2D's on the head-end.
Having roamed the Quebec City - Windsor corridor for 22 years, the last 7-car set was scheduled for retirement one week ago, but due to various mechanical issues with the new Siemens Venture trains, the REN was granted an extra week on the road. Polishing the rails between Ottawa and Quebec City at 95 miles per hour for 7 extra days.

A morning shot in the majestic glen. Heading north on a schedule but always time to catch some great light and awesome views.
With the FEC's new schedule, 101 can be a morning shot at Stuart on the longer days of the year (and a little bit of delay helps too). The standard GEVO-LNG tender set lead it southbound on this day, under common FL weather conditions for the summer. July 2021.
Today's edition of Armchair Traveling takes me back to our Panama Canal Crossing. We were up long before dawn to be sure that we didn't miss any of the action. This image was taken at 6:15 a.m. We were leaving Limon Bay and entering the Canal, approaching the Gatun Lock.
Designed by Louis Berger. The joke is that this bridge, the third to cross the canal, scheduled for completion in 2016 but not finished until 2019, will allow the French to succeed at something on the Panama Canal where they failed in their attempt to build the Canal in the late 1800's.
The main span was joined in September 2018 (about 5 months after this image), and the bridge was finally opened in August of 2019. Total length 9,250 feet; 697 feet high.

Merlin - Falco columbarius
The UK's smallest bird of prey, this compact, dashing falcon has a relatively long, square-cut tail and rather broad-based pointed wings, shorter than those of other falcons. Its wingbeat tends to be rapid with occasional glides, wings held close to the body.
In winter, the UK population increases as most of the Icelandic breeding birds migrate to our warmer climate. Although recovering from a population crash in the late 20th century, it is on the Red List. It is a Schedule 1 listed species on The Wildlife and Countryside Act
The merlin (Falco columbarius) is a small species of falcon from the Northern Hemisphere, with numerous subspecies throughout North America and Eurasia. A bird of prey once known colloquially as a pigeon hawk in North America, the merlin breeds in the northern Holarctic; some migrate to subtropical and northern tropical regions in winter. Males typically have wingspans of 53–58 centimetres (21–23 in), with females being slightly larger. They are swift fliers and skilled hunters who specialize in preying on small birds in the size range of sparrows to quail. The merlin has for centuries been well regarded as a falconry bird. In recent decades merlin populations in North America have been significantly increasing, with some merlins becoming so well adapted to city life that they forgo migration.
Merlins inhabit fairly open country, such as willow or birch scrub, shrubland, but also taiga forest, parks, grassland such as steppe and prairies, or moorland. They are not very habitat-specific and can be found from sea level to the treeline. In general, they prefer a mix of low and medium-height vegetation with some trees, and avoid dense forests as well as treeless arid regions. During migration however, they will utilize almost any habitat.
Most of its populations are migratory, wintering in warmer regions. Northern European birds move to southern Europe and North Africa, and North American populations to the southern United States to northern South America. In the milder maritime parts of its breeding range, such as Great Britain, the Pacific Northwest and western Iceland, as well as in Central Asia, it will merely desert higher ground and move to coasts and lowland during winter. The migration to the breeding grounds starts in late February, with most birds passing through the USA, Central Europe and southern Russia in March and April, and the last stragglers arriving in the breeding range towards the end of May. Migration to winter quarters at least in Eurasia peaks in August/September, while e.g. in Ohio, just south of the breeding range, F. c. columbarius is typically recorded as a southbound migrant as late as September/October. In Europe, merlins will roost communally in winter, often with hen harriers (Circus cyaneus). In North America, communal roosting is rare.
Merlins rely on speed and agility to hunt their prey. They often hunt by flying fast and low, typically less than 1 m (3.3 ft) above the ground, using trees and large shrubs to take prey by surprise. But they actually capture most prey in the air, and will "tail-chase" startled birds. Throughout its native range, the merlin is one of the most able aerial predators of small to mid-sized birds, more versatile if anything than the larger hobbies (which prefer to attack in mid-air) and the more nimble sparrowhawks (which usually go for birds resting or sleeping in dense growth). Breeding pairs will frequently hunt cooperatively, with one bird flushing the prey toward its mate.
By far the most serious long-term threat to these birds is habitat destruction, especially in their breeding areas. Ground-nesting populations in moorland have a preference for tall heather, and are thus susceptible to overmanagement by burning vast tracts instead of creating a habitat mosaic containing old and new growth. Still, the merlin is rather euryoecious and will even live in settled areas, provided they have the proper mix of low and high vegetation, as well as sufficient prey (which is usually the case) and nesting sites (which is a common limiting factor).

Stonehenge a Scheduled Ancient prehistoric monument located 2 miles west of Amesbury in Wiltshire.
One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is the remains of a ring of standing stones set within earthworks. It is in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.
Archaeologists believe it was constructed from 3,000 BC to 2,000 BC. The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3,100 BC. Radiocarbon dating in 2008 suggested that the first bluestones were raised between 2,400 and 2,200 BC. Another theory suggests the bluestones may have been raised at the site as early as 3,000 BC.
The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury Henge. It is a national legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage, while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.
Archaeological evidence found by the Stonehenge Riverside Project in 2008 indicates that Stonehenge could have been a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. The dating of cremated remains indicate that deposits contain human bone from as early as 3000 BC, when the ditch and bank were first dug. Such deposits continued at Stonehenge for at least another 500 years.
Dunster Castle is a former motte and bailey castle, now a country house owned by the National Trust, in the village of Dunster, near Minehead, Somerset, England.
The castle stands atop a steep hill called the Tor, and has been fortified since the late Anglo-Saxon period. The medieval castle walls were mostly destroyed following the siege of Dunster Castle at the end of the English Civil War. Remodelling work carried out by the architect Anthony Salvin extensively changed the appearance of Dunster Castle during Victorian times to make it appear more Gothic and Picturesque.

Female Blinded Sphinx (Paonias excaecata; Hodges 7824) - Suburban New Jersey, 25 miles west of "The City" (NYC)
Earlier today Dah Wife came running into the house shouting, "Giant moth, giant moth!" She wasn't as excited as the time she spotted a Polyphemus Moth in Florida, so I was reasonably sure that it wasn't Mothra, so instead of hiding in the basement I ran to get my camera and take some pics.
When I found the moth I immediately recognized it as a Blind Sphinx, and then gave her a little poke to see if she would be so kind as to show me her blind eyes, and was pleasantly surprised at how she accommodated me!
And then when I looked up her last visit on Flickr ( to find her scientific name), I found she was right on schedule ± a day or two. Pretty amazing how you don't really need a calendar if you know your buggers.

In September 2015, I was scouting out and photographing numerous sites around Lake Tahoe, California and many sites in the Eastern Sierras for a short 5 days.
One the night of September 17, I took the Bonsai Rock Milky Way shot with the moon just above the distant mountain peaks.
The next day we moved down into the Eastern Sierras where I had been planning to photograph the iconic bristlecone pine tree with the Milky Way. Little did I know on the way down how well the moon would come into play with my night sky photography work there.
I used a long established technique to get the moon rays in this shoot while I light painted the bristlecone pine tree with my special light.
In 2017, I will have two 5 day Milky Way photography workshop in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, one over the 3rd week in March and one over the 3rd week in April.
During each of the two workshops, I will conduct 3 4+ hour Milky Way Photoshop post processing session where I teach all the techniques I used to create this final photo but this time it will be more of what is called a "Deep Dive" PS post processing session and workshop participants will need a laptop with Photoshop CS 2017. Lightroom will work but lacks some functionality used in what I will teach.

Well if it isn't the lovely Jessica again! And she's now she has a new look, out with the red and in with the blonde and it looks great on her. Then again she looks breath taking regardless!
We originally were planning to meet up and shoot earlier last week but I had the cancel on her the night before. I managed to get sick the week before and the days just before our planned shoot it just got worse. I was hoping I'd get better but 1 week later my cold developed into the flu. At the moment I wasn't sure when our next chance to meet up would be, figured it wouldn't be until next month since I was (and currently am) going to be in Halifax for a week and my work schedule after that wasn't looking the greatest. So just before I was to leave for Halifax we managed to meet up for a little bit later in the evening after we both finished work. We spent around 3 hours walking around downtown Toronto shooting and its great working with Jessica because we always end up getting a lot of great shots. Got almost 20 keepers from the shoot and I'll slowly upload some of my favourites. I want to say this one might be my favourite from our little shoot and funny enough it was the first shots of the day too.

So much so that I only just made it in time.... Thanks to gen providers.
