It's going to be another "Grab-a-Box" week. This box is loaded with grab shots that I took on my to the Roberval & Saguenay Railway in August of 1988. We had went via Maine.
After the BAR in Millinocket, ME, we travel to Aroostock and across the border into New Brunswick and Edmonton and then toward Quebec City. Along the way this train was caught at Saint-Éleuthère, (previously posted here).
And then onto the R&S where a few of the shots there are in this album.

Weather was much better by the end of the week, but a nearly straight shot to New York was in order due to my work schedule.
At Ste-Foy Quebec we find this pull-pull style VIA Rail train getting ready to head for Montreal.
- www.kevin-palmer.com - It was supposed to hit the previous night. But the aurora runs on its own schedule. Only after the solar storm watch was cancelled, most skywatchers had written it off as a bust, did the northern lights show. The late arrival ended up being a good thing because this night was crystal clear in Wyoming. Temperatures below zero and a bitter breeze brought frosted eyelashes and numb fingers. But I've been waiting 3 months for a night like this one. Geomagnetic storms are less frequent in the winter and often hidden behind clouds when they do happen. So when conditions are perfect I have to take advantage. Pillars appeared briefly at 11:00 and faded, then the real show started after 1AM. This is a location I found while exploring the local backroads. After marking it on a map, I waited until the time was right to return and capture the northerly view. In recent months more sunspots have been appearing on the Sun. As we head towards the maximum of the 11-year solar cycle, views like this will only become more common.
The day before our blizzard hit was a balmy springlike afternoon. I went searching to see what Mother Nature might have lined up for us in a few weeks. Sure enough, the reliable Lenten Rose (Hellebore) was right on schedule and nearly ready to bloom. In mild winters or with some protection the leaves are evergreen. Today's snow will slow them down a little but won't hurt the leaves or buds.
My young daughter set up the props for this shot but they were rearranged a few times by the snail. My schedule didn't allow time for photography this morning so I was forced to take this inside with artificial lights tonight. Feeling off my game this weekend, hoping for a fresh start again tomorrow.
...Waiting (for a bus?) The sign in Irish, behind the man, is announcing a coming county council housing project...years behind schedule, most likely due to the pandemic.

The full name of the operator of this Electra was the Emerald Shillelagh Chowder and Marching Society, which trades nowadays as the Shillelagh Travel Club in Fairfax, Virginia. One the Electra was retired in the mid-1980s, the club ceased operating its own aircraft and relied on scheduled flights instead.
Both sandhill crane eggs hatched and out popped two precocious, healthy orangey-gold chicks, endearingly known as "colts" almost immediately ready to follow their parents out of the nest on their diligent foraging for worms and insects to feed the colts.
Interesting to note that these photos were taken exactly one year to the day from my images of the 2019 hatchlings. These guys really keep to a tight schedule!
The sprawling two story Earl's Palace in Birsay, Orkney, Scotland was built between 1570 and 1580 by the notorious Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney, the illegitimate son of James V. The Earl considered himself the absolute ruler of Orkney and Shetland and was the father of the even nastier tyrant Patrick Stewart, executed for treason in 1615. It was in ruins by 1700 and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
VRE 305 heads south toward Fredericksburg, dodging some intermittent clouds as they slow for their stop in Crystal City. With the roads still rough and the federal government offices closed, VRE operated their snow schedule at about 50% the normal service today. I'm guessing most trains were still empty.
A trio of C4s lead an east-bound intermodal past the venerable searchlights that guard the CPKC diamonds in Savanna. Like most searchlights on Class 1s these days, these vintage lights are scheduled for replacement in the near future.
The calmly flowing waters of a swollen Kickapoo Creek gently touch the concrete footings currently supporting the passage of this heavy, 131-car, southbound Union Pacific coal drag as its two, lead, AC six-axles ride their dynamic brakes, coasting downhill across a combination deck plate and lattice through truss bridge along the former C&NW "SI Line" outside Bartonville on a gloomy July morning. This train of loaded aluminum BethGons -- symbol CNAPW 14 -- are topped out with over 18,000 tons Wyoming's finest black diamonds; Filled at Peabody's North Antelope Mine in the state's rich Powder River Basin, these hoppers have only a few short miles left to travel before reaching their destination at NRG Energy's Powerton Generating Station near Pekin. The train will soon cross the Illinois River drawbridge and immediately make a right turn onto the IMRR and down into Crescent Yard for interchange where they'll tie down and the loads will wait for an Illinois & Midland crew to spot the cars at the plant for final dumping. Slated for decommission come the end of 2028 due to the country's relentless insistence on "cleaner" energy alternatives, Powerton is the sole remaining, actively burning coal-fired power plant to still remain standing in the greater Peoria area, outliving the facilities at Havana, Hennepin and Canton's Duck Creek (2019), and eventually the E.D. Edwards Station at Bartonville (2022). Once closed, it'll be another major hit in activity levels for a route that is already down in traffic. Twice weekly scheduled manifest service between Peoria and Clinton, IA, as needed coal, grain and ethanol unit traffic, and seasonal ballast trains are pretty much the bulk of what traverses this line.
For southbounds, this is the final, and most dramatic, crossing atop a snaky Kickapoo Creek which twists and turns beneath the rails of the Peoria Subdivision in six different locations within just about a short, two mile stretch of track. Just about a half mile back from this bridge, the train is still working through the CTC controlled interlocking at "Peoria JCT" where the Peoria Sub main to South Pekin splits from UP's "Low Line," which routes trains for Peoria area interchange into and out of their small Adams St. Yard just a short distance away on the city's southwest side. The single-tracked Peoria Subdivision, which runs south out of Nelson away from the busy Geneva Sub, uses a combination of CTC, TWC and ABS infrastructure to route what little traffic runs down this line and is also the only class 1 of four that has a "through route" through the city. A line that does not get much attention from photographers, an older "winged" EMD SD70ACe on the point of a well timed coal load just was enough for me to grab the camera and quickly pick it off at this very seldom shot location.
I sure could do without that walkway.
Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! We have a fun and friendly holiday schedule this month.

With its scheduled maintenance complete, Arcturus Outpost’s LL-928 Galaxy Explorer takes flight, to explore strange new worlds and seek out new life and new civilizations.
--- For this shot, I was trying to take the vibe from the box artwork with the ship zipping across a starry skied tan colored, planetoid surface and just give it a 2020’s sci-fi cinematic look and feel.

SOO 909 didn't often rate a pair of GP9's by late 1983 when I took this shot. 2408 and 404 are on the hill leaving Trout Lake with 4000 tons on October 18, 1983. With another 36 loads scheduled to be picked up between here and Gladstone the old geeps will be getting a workout before this day is over.
With 258's new schedule, the morning Orrick shot is now constantly available. Getting an eastbound here in morning light used to be a rarity after 120's schedule change several years ago.
The CTC siding here is on its deathbed as the turnout at Curry (east end) has been removed. It's no surprise given it's condition and seldom use. I've only seen MOW equipment parked here. I wonder what that will mean for the west end and the nice signal bridge.

As the military space vessel, IRC Agatha Christie leaves Stonehenge Spacefort in pursuit of the Frigus Iustitia, that ship is dropping out of tach speed near a distant IRC outpost, Septem Caelum.
Septem Caelum Comm Tech: (his image appears on the forward holoscreen) Frigus Iustitia, welcome to Outpost Septem Caelum.
MSS: (on the bridge, in the command chair) Thank you. This is Major Sky. We are rendezvousing with another ship -- soon.
SCCT: Understood. Which ship are you meeting?
MSS: I don't know, but Captain Jetsam will be aboard.
SCCT: Do you plan to vee over?
MSS: No. We're on a tight schedule.
SCCT: Understood. Let us know if you need anything. (his image is replaced by one of the outpost)
MSS: (leans back in the command chair) Now, we wait.
Aboard the IRC Agatha Christie, Cpt Jetsam is leaning back in the command seat, appearing calm. A low tone from the Pilot's station draws her eyes.
Pilot: Captain Jetsam, that signal you had me scanning for; it just appeared at Outpost Septem Caelum.
CDL: (leans forward in the chair with a small smile) Take us there. Tach five.
CMOLB: (moves to stand by CDL's seat) I hope we make it in time.
Cpt Jetsam says nothing to this vocalized concern she shares, she simply gazes at the holo projection of stars and planets they pass until the screen glows purple as they drop out of tach speed, replaced by an image of the Frigus Iustitia orbiting Outpost Septem Caelum.
QDPN: Assume orbit.
Pilot: Aye, sir.
QDPN: Comm Officer, contact the Frigus Iustitia.
CommO: Aye, sir. IRC Agatha Christie to Frigus Iustitia, please respond.
MSS: (her holo image fills the forward screen) Frigus Iustitia, welcome to Outpost Septem Caelum.
CDJ: Major Sky, you have my ship.
MSS: On the contrary, Captain Jetsam. I have your ship, and I have Major Sky.
CDJ: You have? Who are you?
MSS: First, please allow me to apologize for what has happened, but the circumstances are dire, and there was no time to explain.
CDJ: Oh, then apology accepted. Give me back my friend, and my ship.
MSS: (smiles) Scrummy's told me about your sense of humor.
CDJ: You may call her, Major Sky. Has she told you about my overdeveloped protective instincts?
MSS: She has, which is why the two of you were chosen, actually.
CDJ: Chosen? Look, who the red nova are you?
MSS: My name is, Koe Ghitatio, Tech Mentalist to her Highness Princess Bhonumm Durus of the planet, Vhipernhal.
CDJ: Vhipernhal? (looks around the bridge) Anyone know the name? (the entire bridge crew shakes their heads, no) Never heard of it.
MSS-KG: Our planet lies beyond your current exploration.
CDJ: Why have you attacked Major Sky? Why did you kill Dr. Litefful? And why did you steal my ship?
MSS-KG: You misunderstand, Pips.
CDJ: (raises a hand) No. Oh, no, no no.
MSS-KG: Apologies, Captain. I did not kill Dr. Litefful. I was unable to properly express myself to her. My mentalist tech is experimental. She assumed I was trying to seize control of her mind. She killed herself.
CDJ: It appears she was correct. You HAVE seized control of Major Sky, AND my SHIP.
CMOLB: (quietly, to CDJ) Careful, Captain.
MSS-KG: This merging with Scr--Major Sky was consensual. We took your ship, knowing you would follow. Captain Jetsam, the people of Vhipernhal, all of us, are dying! We desperately need your help!
CDJ: Consensual? Then let me talk to Major Sky.
MSS-KG: I'm sorry, Captain. If I sever the connection, I might not be able to reconnect. I barely managed to communicate with her after Dr. Litefful killed herself.
CDJ: I just call that, convenient.
MSS-KG: Captain, we don't have time for this verbal sparring. The people of my planet are dying. That is why our king took your scientists--
CDJ: (interrupts) YOU kidnapped the scientists?
MSS-KG: No, King Durus did. He's desperate to save our people, but his desperation verges on madness. He will do anything to save us, even risk going to war.
CMOLB: What are your people dying from?
MSS-KG: You are the chief medical officer of this ship. Good, I'm glad you chose to accompany the Captain. We don't know what is killing us, but we do know the source. A great, stellar cloud of unknown properties is slowly engulfing our world. There is nowhere for our people to hide. As our world rotates, all points ultimately come into contact with the phenomenon.
CDJ: How are the scientists supposed to help you with that? They aren't medical scientists.
MSS-KG: Plicare.
CDJ: (tenses, pretty sure this crew didn't know the secret of Plicare) You clearly have ships that can traverse space, if you need to move your people.
MSS-KG: King Durus doesn't want to move ships, Captain. He wants to move the world.

Stonehenge a Scheduled Ancient prehistoric monument located 2 miles west of Amesbury in Wiltshire.
One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is the remains of a ring of standing stones set within earthworks. It is in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.
Archaeologists believe it was constructed from 3,000 BC to 2,000 BC. The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3,100 BC. Radiocarbon dating in 2008 suggested that the first bluestones were raised between 2,400 and 2,200 BC. Another theory suggests the bluestones may have been raised at the site as early as 3,000 BC.
The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury Henge. It is a national legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage, while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.
Archaeological evidence found by the Stonehenge Riverside Project in 2008 indicates that Stonehenge could have been a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. The dating of cremated remains indicate that deposits contain human bone from as early as 3000 BC, when the ditch and bank were first dug. Such deposits continued at Stonehenge for at least another 500 years.
An elderly couple at the train station trying to decipher the fine print of the arrival schedule. Ostensibly a play on reflection, shots like these also tell a story - here, probably two grandparents about to welcome their children or grandchildren later on :-)
Last Saturday afternoon, I took our two young students from Thailand for a short walk down to the Trentham Memorial Park, and found that preparations were well under way for the Truck Fest scheduled for the next day!
Whilst there weren't many trucks on display that afternoon (A huge number turned up early the next morning), one of the 'stars' of those gathered was this Kenworth T908. And there was a bonus; a second truck was parked on the back half of the low-loader trailer...!
Belonging to "Quality Demolition", this Rig is part of the company's truck racing team. No, the T908 isn't used for racing (even though it exhibits sheer grunt!), but the "little" truck on the trailer certainly is - and very successfully too...!
And the cost of a Kenworth T908 in New Zealand? Hard to say, but as a rough indicator, a 2009 Prime Mover (i.e. The Tractor Unit but not the trailer) with 23,555 on the clock sells for $NZ176,000...!
So I'm guessing that a new T908 would set the Purchaser back around $NZ600,000 - maybe?
And although it was used a few weeks ago, few songs with a Trucking theme have had more success in New Zealand than CW McCall's "Convoy", so here he is again:

Due to a crazy schedule of meetings, a lunch break seemed unlikely today. So, my wife told me to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, then cram it down whenever. But, some things changed and the plan didn't work out. As a result, my wife told me the leftover sandwich would be my dinner tonight –– plus a small salad. Yes, I eat like a king. #classicnegative
Norfolk Southern local H66 is on their way back south to Allentown after making a turn up to Hazleton with their pair of homely SD60Es as they cross the Lehigh River at Glen Onoko, MP 125 on Norfolk Southern's Lehigh Line maine. They are on what was once Main 2 of the former Lehigh Valley Railroad mainline while Main 1 at right is now the property of the Reading and Northern. When Conrail sold the upper Lehigh Line from Lehighton to Mehoopany to the RBMN in 1996 they retained one track as far as Penn Haven and the junction with their Ashmore Secondary in order to continue to serve the Hazleton market which successor NS continues to do to this day.
The LV passed to Conrail in 1976 which continued to use this as a thru route until 1993 and then three years later sold the middle of their Lehigh Line from Penn Haven to Mehoopany (and one of the two mains from Penn Haven to Lehighton as described above) to the expanding RBMN system. Even after that date, however, thru freights operated by the Delaware and Hudson and successor CP continued to travel this way on a route via trackage rights ultimately to Philadelphia and Washington which they were awarded upon the creation of Conrail. Interestingly, after the Norfolk Southern purchased half of Conrail they brought through freights back to this route, and as late as 2015 one pair of NS and one pair of CP trains could be seen here. Alas when CP sold half of the D&H to NS their trains disappeared forever, and then in 2019 NS rerouted their last thru train when the Allentown hump yard was shuttered during the draconian cuts of the PSR era.
For the last five years the upper Lehigh Line has seen nothing but local freights, and north of Lehighton those have operated almost exclusively at night. However a recent schedule change has seen NS running local H66 in daylight on Sundays making a late morning turn north from Allentown to Hazleton and back which was the other major goal of this weekend trip other than 2102 of course!

Excerpt from www.rbg.ca/events/chrysanthemum-and-dahlia-show/:
The Hamilton District Chrysanthemum and Dahlia Society annual show includes dahlia blooms from the entire array of the ADS classification and is a highly impressive spectacle of size, colour, and form!
These blooms are “exhibition quality” and typically not found in local garden centres. There will also be a Design section of the Show which will highlight dahlias and chrysanthemums in various themes according to the Design Show Schedule. There is currently a judging school program running at Royal Botanical Gardens through GCO and many of the students are anxious to enter the show in order to achieve their credentials requirements.
Smithills Hall is a Grade I listed manor house, and a scheduled monument. Early medieval records about the hall began in 1335 and it is one of the oldest and best preserved manor houses in the North West of England.
Over the years the original Medieval Hall has been added to, and provides a fascinating history of the people who lived there. The buildings include Tudor and Victorian wings, in addition to the Medieval Hall, and a private Chapel.

Last night was the annual Million Mask March through central London. After the troubles last year, such as the burning of a police car there were a lot more police on the streets, and they were much more assertive in dealing with protesters.
The red lines on this guy are focus beams from a TV camera outside the van. I couldn't help thinking it looked like the Terminator had tracked him down!
Here's a sunrise photo to wish all of my Flickr friends and followers a Happy New Year. I was going to call this the crack of dawn because of the crack in the dark sky, but I opted for a line from a Nina Simone song instead. This is a famous West Yorkshire landmark known as Castle Hill, just south of Huddersfield. This hill has signs of human occupation dating back 4000 years. This scheduled ancient monument comprises the remains of a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age Hill Fort, plus the remains of a 12th century motte and bailey castle. The tower on the top was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's jubilee and was opened in 1899.
For Station Saturday here's another from my recent little chase of Berkshire and Eastern Railroad train B100. They are passing the historic former passenger station here at MP 427 on the B&E operated Pan Am Southern Freight Mainline, the one time Boston and Maine Fitchburg Division. Built in 1898 by the Fitchburg Railroad, it saw its last scheduled passenger train call on November 30, 1958 when the final train headed east to Boston via the Hoosac Tunnel. Sold into private hands the following year it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
To learn a bit more see below:
www.historic-structures.com/ma/williamstown/train_station...
B100 is the symbol B&E uses for the continuation to Ayer of Norfolk Southern train 264 (intermodal 63rd Street Yard in Chicago to Mechanicville) that used to be known as 22K. The train is led by the standard SD60E which is necessary due to it being one of a small fleet of this model equipped with ACSES for operation on the MBTA property east of Westminster. This train is on borrowed time here because one condition of the sale of Pan Am to CSXT in 2022 was the granting of trakage rights to NS for the operation of one daily pair of premium trains (this one and its westbound counterpart) over CSXT's former Boston and Albany route. These trains will then take the old Delaware and Hudson Albany main to Voorheesville, NY and utilize the connection on to Selkirk Branch which has been rebuilt there. From there they will travel east via Selkirk Yard, the Castelton Bridge and the Berkshire and Boston Subs to Worcester and on up to Ayer. Allegedly that routing will commence June 1, so if you want shots of 'the pig train' on the old Boston and Maine the time is now.

Notice regarding "Lot No.402_”.
From now on, I will host "Lot No.402_".
The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.
That is the number when it was put up for auction.
No sign was written on the work.
So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.
However, as a result of various appraisals, it was exposed to the sun.
A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.
I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

Glastonbury Abbey was a monastery in Glastonbury, Somerset, England. Its ruins, a grade I listed building and scheduled ancient monument, are open as a visitor attraction.
The abbey was founded in the 7th century and enlarged in the 10th. It was destroyed by a major fire in 1184 but subsequently rebuilt and by the 14th century was one of the richest and most powerful monasteries in England. The abbey controlled large tracts of surrounding land and was instrumental in major drainage projects on the Somerset Levels. The abbey was suppressed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII of England. The last abbot, Richard Whiting (Whyting), was hanged, drawn and quartered as a traitor on Glastonbury Tor in 1539.
From at least the 12th century the Glastonbury area has been associated with the legend of King Arthur, a connection promoted by medieval monks who asserted that Glastonbury was Avalon. Christian legends have claimed that the abbey was founded by Joseph of Arimathea in the 1st century.

One story goes, that in order to raise extra funds from pilgrims to rebuild the abbey the monks, in 1191, dug to find King Arthur and his Queen Guinevere; and bones from two bodies were raised from a deep grave in, the cemetery on the south side of the Lady Chapel. These bones were reburied, much later, in 1278 within the Abbey Church, in a black marble tomb, in the presence of King Edward I.

Not a huge fan of daylight savings time...threw off my whole schedule.
I went back to the field (the part that's still intact at least) and caught the sun lighting up the tree.
Our gardens here in Vancouver are about three weeks behind schedule. Things are starting to bloom now though.
- Mrs P, I know we had euthanasia scheduled for your sick cat today, but I run some tests and it seems he's suddenly feeling better, so I'll cancel it. To keep HCM under control, give him half of this pill every twelve hours and come back every two weeks for exam.

Yes, after our 11,5 y/o was quickly fading away despite treatment we were called to do it, but that same morning something must have been manipulating his midi-chlorians. The vet told us cat's vital signs are better (we were all quite surprised) and the big "E" was cancelled. So, we came back home with our cat alive and pills to keep fluid out of his lungs. That was 35 days ago and he's still here. His heart is in bad shape so we're not expecting miracles, but every day counts.
Would like to do some Lego shooting but without a single new piece in months, I'm out of ideas.
Will try to catch up on vacation next week :)

This morning's 6Y48 Eastleigh-Hoo Jn departmental sedately passes West Byfleet to schedule when conveniently uncrowded this moment.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program! After my previous street photo upload, I'm happily back to long exposure monochromes! Only 3 days ago, I was writing about how, lately, I've had no patience for processing and, all of a sudden, I'm back in the game. Funny how these things work!
This week, I've suddenly rediscovered why I just adore b&w photography. There's just such an amazing emotion that is evoked when I look at a really good b&w photo. Yea, I dabble in the odd colour image or two when I'm feeling a little stale, but b&w is really where it's at for me.
This image is probably one of the darker ones I've done and it's inspired by one of the best b&w photographers around these parts - Andy Brown. He is the king of the dark moody monochrome. Do check out his work if you can.
Hope everyone has a rocking weekend ahead!
There was a definite theme for large parts of the trip to the LS&I - rain. Lots and lots of rain. I was stood in it for a good long while waiting here for this train, and would end up standing in even more later in the day waiting for more trains. It's a cycle, I suppose.
3 Yard-Hill rounds the curve at Forestville, MP58, as it nears the yard at Marquette. With a ship now scheduled for the next day, things are getting busy as the railroad prepares for it. The rain probably isn't helping matters as the heavy train slinks through the forest, though the worst of the grade is behind them now.
Oh what could have been. The QNYCLAC was scheduled to pick up the BNSF 706 from the engine facilities and when they called DS9 to let him know, he responded with "Are you going to be adding it the head end?" The crew came back with "No, it's facing east so can't use it." With the outbound crew already out at the 706 to help expedite the process, the sharp fakebonnet was buried 3rd. out in the consist. After waiting an extra 20 minutes for an eastbounder to clear the new switch to come off of Main 4, they have them rolling out of town at the west end.
Memorial a relembrar todas as vítimas do Acidente de Alcafache. 11-09-1985
Alcafache Memorial to the victims of the Portuguese 11-09. The year was 1985 and a misunderstanding between two dispatchers led to the most severe accident of the Portuguese Railways. The north branch of the international Sud-Express was running behind schedule. From the other side, a Regional train was ordered to proceed to the next station where it should cross with the Sud-Express. However, the International was able to recover part of the delay and was also authorized to carry-on to the next station. From the head collision, 140 souls were lost, from which, about 100 are still missing. May they all rest in peace!
