Epson V330 = one noisy scanner. lesson learned.
I built a camera out of a portable photo scanner that would scan directly to SD cards. I took the guts out and put them into an old Polaroid film pack. I then loaded that film pack into a Tektronix C-5C oscilloscope camera. Using a ton of light and carefully panning the camera, I got some images out.
This is the first recognizable image I got from the camera.

Best $100 I've spent in a while. Minolta Dual Scan II. The scanner responsible for most of the film images I've thrown up here lately.
