Dangerous items are destroyed in a safe demolition.

As well as removing/destroying unexploded landmines and bombs -- making it safe for people to grow food crops; access water sources; build homes, schools, health clinics etc -- MAG also carries out 'mine risk education', to keep communities safe until their land can be cleared.

Support from the U.S. State Department's Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement has enabled MAG's safety messages to reach an additional 31,000 men, women and children.

This Black-crowned Night Heron attacked the two Ibis chicks, then mom came out of nowhere and drove the heron away. The attack lasted about ten seconds but seemed like 10 minutes. After mom drove the heron away the chicks just wanted to eat. So no damage done. They seemed fine the rest of the time I was there.

WESTERN DARFUR ON VERGE OF ABYSS, UNDER-SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS

WARNS SECURITY COUNCIL IN BRIEFING FOLLOWING RECENT VISIT TO DARFUR, UGANDA

For More Than 1,000 Days, Nights, Darfur’s Defenceless Civilians

Fear for Lives; Sudanese Government’s Failure to Protect Is ‘Shameful’

With a volatile mix of Government forces, militias, rebels and armed opposition groups from Chad roaming freely throughout much of the Sudan’s western Darfur spreading fear and terror, the United Nations top humanitarian official warned the Security Council that war-torn western Darfur was close to the abyss, and suggested that faster progress in the peace process could be made if those negotiating in hotels in big cities did so in the refugee camps, accompanied by their wives and children.

Briefing the Council on his recent visits to Darfur and northern Uganda, Jan Egeland, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said “for more than a thousand days and a thousand nights, the defenceless civilians of Darfur have been in fear for their lives, and the lives of their children. The Government’s failure to protect its own citizens even in areas where there are no rebels, has been shameful and continues. So does our own failure, more than a year after world leaders in this very building pledged their own responsibility to protect civilians where the Government manifestly fails to do so.”

I say this everytime, but I think Im done with Six Flags. Amusement parks are just too much, not even the rollercoasters can cheer me up when Im bombarded with shitty overpriced foods, advertisements everywhere (Really a big banner for hair gel across the "haunted house" Poltergeist ride?) and 1 hr wait times. I'll stick to my true love: Carnivals, Delicious treats, dirty carnies, night time neon lights....

"Message from Mary S.: The future of the Internet as we know it is at stake. The FCC is proposing rules that would kill the open Internet and create a fast lane for companies that can afford big fees and a slow dirt road for the rest of us. We're fighting back--and we're being heard. This Thursday, May 15, the FCC will meet in Washington, DC, to vote on whether or not to advance this proposal. We'll rally in DC, but we won't stop there: We'll gather at FCC offices in 24 cities to send shockwaves through the FCC bureaucracy until they restore real Net Neutrality and protect the Internet for all of us."

Save Historic Olvera Street

Save the St. from commerical interests ?

the rental rates of the small stalls have increased dramatically on a bad economy so much that

small vendors are unable to make a profit selling on this

historic street. seems to be a message to small vendors to get out so commerical interests can come in.....maybe Starbucks, Taco Bell, and a Mcdonalds, ??instead of the local taco stand ?

Trouble in paradise. This woodcut created by artist Gillyin Gatto is a protest poster against a proposed LNG terminal that is threatening Passamaquoddy Bay. This terminal will mean that huge LNG (liquified natural gas ) tankers would enter Passamaquoddy Bay through a channel between two Canadian islands, Campobello and Deer Island. They will the have to take a right hand turn passing near the "Old Sow" one of the worlds largest whirlpools before getting to the proposed terminal at the Passamaquodddy Reservtion across from Deer Island. These tankers would be escorted by gunships in case of terrorism. No ship can operate within 1000 yards of these tankers while in transit. The terminals will be lit up 24 hours a day within sight of St Andrews New Brunswick a very popular tourist resort. Fishing and all tourist boat traffic will have to cease during the tankers transit. Life as we know it will drastically change downeast. The LNG proponents are offering big $ to the towns and the Passamaquody Tribes to get this to pass. it has turned neighbor against neighbor in the hopes of jobs and tax breaks. The biggest hope we in Maine have that they won't be able to build these terminals in such a dangerous place, is that the Canadian Government has said it won't allow these tankers to pass through Head Harbour Channel. the LNG proponents argue that it is international waters. Canada was instrumental in stopping a Pittston oil refinery from being built in this area in the late 70's and we can only hope that they can help us win this fight, too.
