Usually, you don't go to a DIY superstore/warehouse to photograph the building's façade but buy DIY stuff (which we did, too, of course). Unless it's the "Bauhaus Halensee". This DIY warehouse in the busy and densely-populated Charlottenburg borough (Halensee district) is located between an urban railway line and the urban motorway, its entrance facing the busy Kurfürstendamm, one of Berlin's most famous and well-known boulevards. Its façade, consisting of textured, structured, 3D-shaped aluminium panels, is very photogenic.
This is the façade on one of the building's long sides in a wide-angle close-up view, as I stood right in front of it. Stupidly, I shot at F2,2 (I had photographed a flower growing on the adjacent green strip, wanted a blurry background, and had forgotten to adjust the aperture back to "architecture-suitable" when taking the first shots of the façade), so the roof area was a little blurry so I sharpened that part in post (Topaz).
Please note that this is not a mirrored image. It is the façade "as is", and the only manipulation here is that I removed a roof overhang on the lower left side because it was distracting.

The Silodam is situated on the IJ River, at the tip of the pier, next to two former grain warehouses silos that have been converted. The IJ River served as Amsterdam's harbor in the golden age. Then, when the harbor fell into a decline, the buildings, warehouses, and shipyards were left unused. In the 1980s, when Amsterdam had a housing shortage, the city regained interest in the river's potentials and a variety of restructuring projects. Originally both silos would be demolished and replaced by new buildings, but the industrial heritage was saved when the silos was declared a national monument. The designers tried to fuse the remaining structure and character of the harbor with new architecture, followed. This new building IJside forms a link between the historic warehouses on the Van Diemenstraat and the renovated grain silos on the Silodam. With its sturdy appearance, the building fits in nicely with the watery surroundings and bustling environment of the old Houthaven on the IJ river. To emphasis the relation with the harbour, steel-coloured, concrete sandwich panels, which refer to the former harbour activities at this location, were used on the outside.The inner courtyard, with its open, transparent core, provides for light and sunshine on the covered section of the square.
In the western part of the Amsterdam harbour an extensive urban operation has transformed a former dam and silo building. A mixed program of housing, offices, work spaces, commercial spaces and public spaces. The new IJside building forms a link between the historic warehouses on the Van Diemenstraat and the renovated grain silos on the Silodam.
Langs de Silodam staan twee voormalige graansilo's die nu dienstdoen als appartementengebouwen, de betonnen en de Stenen Silo. In de jaren 1980 werden de leegstaande silo's gekraakt. De feesten die sindsdien regelmatig in de silo's plaatsvonden speelden een belangrijke rol in de Amsterdamse dancescene. Oorspronkelijk zouden beide silo's worden gesloopt en vervangen door nieuwbouw, maar het industrieel erfgoed werd gered toen de Stenen Silo in 1996 tot rijksmonument werd verklaard. Rond de millenniumwisseling werden de silo's omgebouwd tot appartementengebouwen. De silo werd in 1896-1898 gebouwd naar een ontwerp van architect Jacob Frederik Klinkhamer. Klinkhamer had al in 1888 gepleit voor de bouw van de silo om de graanvoorziening van Amsterdam veilig te stellen, voor het geval dat de stad belegerd zou worden. De silo, met een lengte van 105 meter, bestond uit 60 stortschachten met elk een oppervlak van 15m². In totaal kon er 17 miljoen kilo graan worden opgeslagen. Via lopende banden werd het graan overgebracht naar binnenvaartschepen of treinwagons. In het mulderij- of reinigingsgebouw in het middengedeelte, tussen de twee blinde vleugels, stonden de stoommachines, de reinigingsapparatuur en was het kantoor. Toen de Stenen Silo te klein bleek, werd in 1952 de naastgelegen Betonnen Silo gebouwd. Het terras staat open voor het publiek en biedt je de gelegenheid om dit adembenemende uitzicht over het IJ mee te maken. 's Avonds is het gebouw prachtig verlicht en ziet het geheel er erg sfeervol uit. De ontwikkelingen aan het Amsterdamse IJ staan niet stil. Voor een schitterende stek direct aan het water van de Houthaven ontwierp Tekton Architekten een bijzonder woonwerkgebouw met enorme puien. De IJside met volop uitzicht over de oude Houthaven en de Silodam. Het gebouw is de schakel tussen de reeks oude pakhuizen en de Graansilo. Om de relatie met de haven te accentueren zijn aan de buitenzijde staalkleurige betonnen sandwichpanelen gebruikt, die refereren aan voormalige havenactiviteiten op deze locatie. Het binnenhof, met de open transparante kern, zorgt voor licht en zon op het overdekte pleindeel.
Ideally, no parts of a reentering satellite would survive their fiery return through the atmosphere, so testing is being used to understand how satellites break apart as they fall.
ESA subjected samples of typical satellite structures – such as the one shown, with a structural joint between two aluminium sandwich panels – to conditions equivalent to atmospheric reentry.
The testing made use of the Plasma Wind Tunnel of the DLR German Aerospace Center in Cologne and the Reentry Chamber of Austria’s AAC company in Wiener Neustadt to produce the hypersonic winds and high heat flux required.
“The objective was to understand the failure modes of the current structural joining technologies used on satellites,” comments ESA materials researcher Benoit Bonvoisin.
In future, the aim is to design satellites to disintegrate during reentry, known as ‘design for demise’ or D4D.
Engineer Tiago Soares is working on D4D as part of ESA’s Clean Space initiative, reducing the environmental impacts of the space sector on both Earth and in orbit: “The next step is to develop and test promising new technologies to ensure better fragmentation during reentry.”

“Apollo 6 lifted off smoothly and cleared the tower after performing a yaw maneuver to provide a bit more clearance for the ascending Saturn V. Fortunately, the modifications made to the pad facilities resulted in much less damage on MLP-2 than MLP-1 had experienced during the Apollo 4 launch five months earlier. At 11.1 seconds after launch, SA-502 began a 20-second roll maneuver to align itself to the proper azimuth so that it could begin to slowly pitch over and start travelling downrange. While all seemed to be going well with the flight, at the 110-second mark the ascending rocket began to experience a longitudinal oscillation known as pogo. Superimposed on the steadily growing acceleration curve was an oscillation with a frequency in the 5.2 to 5.5 hertz range which reached a peak amplitude of ±0.6 g about 125 seconds into the flight – over six times larger than the same effect experienced by Apollo 4. This was much higher than the ±0.25 g upper limit permitted during earlier manned missions and would have been intolerable for any crew. If Apollo 6 had carried astronauts, it would have certainly been aborted at this point.
But as the longitudinal oscillations began to die out and finally reach acceptable levels 140 seconds after launch, ground-based and airborne cameras tracking the ascending Saturn V noted several pieces of debris coming off from the area of the SLA just after 133 seconds of flight. At about this time, the emergency detection system (which was flying in an automated closed-loop configuration for the first time) cast one vote for aborting the mission which would have been mandatory had a second vote been cast. Changes in the telemetry readings indicated that the outer skin of one of the SLA panels had debonded and separated from the rocket. Fortunately, the SLA maintained its overall structural integrity allowing the ascent to continue.
The center engine of the S-IC stage shutdown as expected 144.9 seconds after launch followed by the outer four F-1 engines at 148.4 seconds. After operating for just 1.1 seconds longer than planned and travelling just 7.3 meters per second faster than nominal, the S-IC stage was separated 149 seconds after launch at an altitude of 60.1 kilometers. The S-IC-2 had completed its task and fell to Earth breaking up about 397 seconds after launch at an altitude of 28.9 kilometers some 611 kilometers downrange. Aside from the 30 seconds of excessive vibration and the failure of three of its four camera pods to eject from the falling stage, S-IC-2 had met its objectives.
After casting off its spent first stage, the five J-2 engines of the S-II stage ignited 149.8 seconds after launch as Apollo 6 continued to accelerate towards orbit. At 184.8 seconds after launch, the LES separated since it was no longer needed to support abort options for the rest of the mission. All was going well until the 319-second mark when the fuel flow rate on engine J-2044 in the no. 2 position on the S-II stage suddenly increased at the same time its thrust decreased. Following a spike in the engine bay temperature, engine no. 2 shut down after running for 263.8 seconds out of a planned 368.8-second burn. Although it was showing no signs of trouble, engine J-2508 in the no. 3 position also shutdown 1.3 seconds later. After the loss of two J-2 engines, the Saturn V guidance system did its best to cope with the situation. While never configured to deal with the loss of two J-2 engines, Apollo 6 continued its ascent. Finally, the remaining three engines of S-II-2 shutdown nine minutes and 36.3 seconds after liftoff. With the three remaining engines burning for 58.8 seconds longer than planned, Apollo 6 was travelling 102.3 meters per second slower than expected due to the lower acceleration while being 436.8 kilometer farther downrange and 6.4 kilometers higher because of how the guidance system tried to cope with the unexpected situation.
After separating from the now spent S-II stage, the single J-2 engine of S-IVB-502 ignited just a second after the S-II engines shutdown to continue the troubled ascent to orbit. The guidance system continued to attempt to get Apollo 6 back on course to reach a 185-kilometer parking orbit despite being too high and travelling too slow. Finally at 12 minutes and 27 seconds after launch, the S-IVB shutdown after burning almost 29 seconds longer than planned. Instead of being in a circular 185-kilometer circular orbit, Apollo 6 was in a more eccentric 173.0 by 356.8-kilometer orbit. Despite this off-nominal orbit and the longer than expected burn time, enough propellant remained in the S-IVB to proceed with the mission and perform the TLI burn near the end of the second revolution.”

“Approximately 2 minutes 13 seconds after lift-off of the Apollo 6 mission, abrupt changes of strain, vibration, and acceleration measurements were indicated in the S-IVB, instrument unit, adapter, lunar module, and command and service modules; photographs showed objects coming from the area of the adapter. The adapter, however, continued to sustain the required loads with no impairment of the mission.
The investigation was first focused upon the understanding of the coupled vibration modes and characteristics of the launch vehicle and spacecraft. Extensive test programs were conducted. It was eventually concluded that the adapter failure was not caused by vibration.
Extensive study of the airborne photography and other evidence indicated that a large area of the adapter had lost inner facesheet from the honeycomb sandwich panels. Loads and stresses resulting from vibration were determined to be insufficient to initiate such a failure.
The investigation was then directed toward determining the range of pressures that could have been trapped in the Apollo 6 adapter sandwich panels, and toward determining the tolerance of the panels to withstand pressure with various degrees of flaws such as adhesive voids and facesheet dents. The degradation effects of moisture and heat exposure on the adhesive strength were also studied and tested. These tests and analyses led to the conclusion that pressure internal to the sandwich panels could have caused the failure, if a large flaw existed. The pressure buildup would have been caused by aerodynamic heating effects on air and moisture trapped in the panel.
The probable cause of the failure was found in the original ultrasonic inspection scan record of the affected adapter panel. In the center of the region where the adapter failed, horizontally along the station 709 panel splice, the record contained two thick anomalous lines extending several feet. Without an X-ray record of this region, the significance of this particular scan record cannot be fully understood. However, since all other evidence had indicated that the adhesive had to be weakened in a rather large area to initiate the failure, the investigation was focused intently upon the station 709 splices of other adapters. Sufficient information was developed to verify that deficient assembly techniques have consistently resulted in abnormalities in the structure at this station. These abnormalities were identified in adapters 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16.
Before the splice abnormalities were pinpointed, corrective action was taken to reduce pressure "buildup in the honeycomb panels and to reduce heat degrading effects on the adhesive. This was done by drilling vent holes in the inner facesheet and covering the outer facesheet with cork. The adapters having identified abnormalities in the station 709 splice are being repaired, and the contractor is investigating ways of avoiding these abnormalities in panels yet to be bonded.”

Nassau Community College (The Eggers Group, PC, with lead designer David L. Finci, completed 1978). A shockingly under-reported entry in the megastructural tradition, built on another chunk of the same former airfield site as Hofstra University, this complex embodies the late-modernist search for variety of spatial effects within a highly systematic design and construction logic. In this case, as the 1992 AIA Guide reports, "the entire complex is based on 20-foot-wide structural bays of precast, prestressed concrete components with spans ranging from 20 to 125 feet, permitting easy expansion of the original core." In other words: design your own kit of LEGO parts, and make them do things for you.
On top of that, Finci permits himself one decadent indulgence: the 60-degree angle, permitting an equilateral triangle for the administration tower, mitred ends for the linear spine buildings, and a few picturesque kinks in plan. That last tool permits some employment of the magical "what's around the next corner?" effect, and a couple of courtyards (too few, really) charmingly nestled into the elbows of the scheme. The real impact is felt when looking or walking down those grand spines, which frame two grand trenches (one planted, one an asphalt driveway) with spacious sheltered walkways and the sense of occupying some techno-heroic space-colony of tomorrow. The ramped bubble-canopy bridges spanning the trenches are the cherry on top.
The Team-10-like blocks which flank the spines - almost inevitably dubbed "Clusters" - are less instantly eye-catching but display the range of the module. Ziggurats of concrete beams and columns, filled in with glass and what look like some kind of steel sandwich panels, they still radiate a midcentury conviction that all a campus needs is enough space, a consistent geometric order, and the variegation of trees and their shadows as counterpoint. At least on this sunny summer's day visit, I was convinced. This has to be one of the last large-scale American campus projects to remain steadfast in its Modernist convictions; just a few years later, it's hard to imagine such a mega-scale master plan being adopted at all, and certainly not without some imported historicist vocabulary intended to reassure parents, teens and donors that they will be getting a Proper College Experience. You know, like in the movies!

The unloaded parterre carries a "floating pontoon" of the second above-ground floor with a prominent angle iron spike at the corner of the Šalamounská and Výstavní Street.
The compound contains two administration premises.
At the horizontal level, the building ends with a wooden mass of saw-tooth roofs containing two residential units.
The object has a partial cellar containing the company owner's vinotheque.

The buildup of heat due to skin friction during sustained supersonic flight had to be addressed. During a Mach 3 cruise, the aircraft would reach an average of 450 °F (230 °C), with leading edges reaching 630 °F (330 °C), and up to 1,000 °F (540 °C) in engine compartments. NAA proposed building their design out of sandwich panels, with each panel consisting of two thin sheets of stainless steel brazed to opposite faces of a honeycomb-shaped foil core. Expensive titanium would be used only in high-temperature areas like the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer and the nose. To cool the interior, the XB-70 pumped fuel en route to the engines through heat exchangers.

CONCEPT
The design approach studies the impact of physical influences on our hearing perception and how to apply soundscape effects to alter our sensation through transforming and adopting building volumes and their material specifications. Contrary to our built environment, sound or music has no present materiality so it is always perceived at the moment of its generation. Because of this immediate perception of sound our sensations could range from supreme beauty to painful intolerability. In architecture and urban planni, soundscaping design approaches of exterior spaces are barley recognized and hardly ever applied; therefore many public spaces are unattractive in our psychological perception.
The Pavilions spatial structure acts as a “transformator” that changes our perception and sensation of the soundcape on the plaza around the Pavilion and music inside the performance space. The shapes and volume as well as its material specification were developed to recognizably reduce the ambient noise level of the urban plaza setting around the Pavilion. This generates an acoustical “black hole” that changes our perception close to the Pavilion and on the Marstallplatz and heightens our sensation additional to our visual cognition.
Parallel to acoustical approaches and simulations the generation of the form of the Pavilion was driven by the concept of materializing music into architecture. Selected sequences of songs become dynamic forces that transform and create spatial form. Here we transcribed a sequence of Jimi Hendrix’ “Purple Haze” “…’Scuse me while I kiss sky…”. Analyzing the frequencies of the sound file and linking it to the computer generated 3D model, the scripting tool then parametrically transforms the shell into pyramid shaped like spikes. Music becomes frozen and creates perceivable architectural space.
The position of the mobile Pavilion on the southern end of the Marstallplatz in front of the Marstall building and the new Opera rehearsal building meets three important design criteria, it maximizes its visibility in this urban setting, it improves the soundacpe of the plaza and also complies with local fire and building codes. The temporary building volume acts as a sound barrier to block emissions from cars passing by and creates a “zone of silence” around and in front of the Pavilions entrance area.
Towards the street and the Marstall plaza the double shell dissolves from the tilted façade and transforms into an interstitial space that offers a weather protected lounge and bar area. The “transcribed” crystal like inhabitable double skin performs as a transitional space from the plaza to the entrance and towards the main performance space. The main entrance is indicated and high lighted with a folded and cantilevering roof.
The mobile and temporary Pavilion is constructed as a “portable building”. Its modular structures are designed and constructed to be stored into regular sea containers for transport. The Pavilion is conceived to travel and be erected in different locations worldwide and to perform in different urban settings. It can be used with maximum flexibility for a wide range of functions. The primary steel structure is mounted as finished modules and completed with semi finished industrial products. The wall assembly consist of 3mm anodized brush finished aluminium sheets on the exterior, partially perforated with sound absorptive mineral wool panels, and standardized 60mm aluminium sandwich panels on the interior, partially perforated for sound absorption.
The exterior scape of the Pavilion is planned as a programmed ramping landscape to adopt to existing terrain and plaza height differences and create an even event platform and entrance. The surface of the podium is made of absorbing soft material to enhance the physical and psychological sensation on the created absorbing “zone of silence” while approaching the Pavilion.
The interior space is designed to be used for different types of performances and holds 300 seats for different stage settings. The uses are varying from opera, classical music to theatre, lectures and banquette events with focus on maximum flexibility for users and operators.
The interior surfaces can be varied to meet different acoustical and atmospheric settings using pyramid like shaped mobile elements for wall and ceiling to create different sceneries. Complying with standard clamps for production lighting and theatre devices the roof structure is designed to avoid extra technical rigging elements. The interior performance space has overall clear dimensions of 21 m length and 17m width and a variable clear height from 6m to 8m. The backstage service area is conceived as a flexible open space for artists changing room and storage.
