Have always though that the humble twin set is , for me, one of the great feminine outfits. Yes it may look a bit retro, but I still think they are a fabulous garment...perfect for the office!!

I met Sam and Lisa while we were all awaiting the Snowbirds arrival in Kingston Ontario. The Snowbirds are Canada's aerobatic demonstration team based in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan.

Word spread on social media that the Snowbirds, having just completed their annual airshow in Toronto, were en route to Quebec for their next show and were going to spend tonight at the Kingston airport. Quite a few aviation enthusiasts waited out a heavy downpour and a waterspout that came and went over Lake Ontario.

Sam, Lisa, and I had selected historic Fort Henry as our vantage point as it sits on a hilltop over Kingston and at the strategic mouth of the St. Lawrence River and the Rideau Canal.

A number of photographers and aviation enthusiasts waited out an intense downpour and even a waterspout that appeared over Lake Ontario and then disappeared.

While waiting for the airplanes to arrive and do their formation fly-by, I struck up a conversation with Sam and Lisa who then agreed to pose for my photo project.

Sam (with a cell phone on a tripod) is posted to the nearby army base where he has been serving for the last two years. He is originally from Toronto. Not a super-serious photographer, he still came prepared with his cell phone and tripod. When I asked if he had an "inside track" on when the Snowbirds would arrive he jokingly said "I'm Army and they are Air Force. We don't talk to each other that much."

Lisa, on the other hand, came equipped with a Nikon and a 200 mm zoom lens. She wished it was 600 mm. She is the photographer for the Royal Military College, "Canada's West Point" where officers are trained. It is located nearby. Lisa was very enthusiastic and said she had been in the military for 11 years, having decided upon the military as a career and as an educational opportunity. She talked about some of the exotic equipment she has used in the military - especially a high speed camera which was used to analyze how body armor stops bullets.

Before long the Snowbirds made their characteristic dramatic arrival from Toronto, circling Kingston in a tight formation with their smoke trails streaming out behind.

We all hoped for one more pass but after two or three circuits we had seen what we had come for and packed up our gear. I said goodby to Sam and Lisa and said I had enjoyed meeting them and they in turn wished me well and said they hoped I was enjoying Kingston.

Thank you Sam and Lisa for a friendly chat and for participating in my project. I hope we all got a decent photo or two of the Snowbirds.

Once again, an interest in photography served as a bridge between people who might otherwise never have met. I felt fortunate to have shared some time with these friendly, respectful soldier-photographers.

Meet Sam

Its really difficult to miss Sam - and I say that despite her rather petite frame (and even though she had her hair all bundled upwhen I first saw her walking with her friend Zach). I hesitated on my initial approach when I saw them deeply engrossed in a conversation - but when I met her again on the way back I made my request. Her tied-up hair backlit by the evening sun, her strong eyes and that nose-ring just made her a great subject to photograph as did her slightly shy smile. After a very brief hesitation she agreed and Zach helped us with the reflector. Then Sam opened up her hair and revealed her fabulous curls and you would agree that I made a great choice making my request.

We did a few clicks with the sun in the back and I learned a little about this stunning lady. She hails from New York and works with child welfare. Her favorite quality of herself - her warm nature and ability to connect with people. She spoke very pleasantly in soft calm tones - almost zen like.Turns out she loves yoga - I teased her about her "monk" like vibe. Her favorite memory was her stint in a small village in Panama for her fellowship.

I do not think Sam liked these pictures much - but I was personally quite pleased. The fun part for me was when she complained - paraphrased "don't know what to do with this face?". All I could think was "just enjoy it my friend - you look awesome". Turns out she has also done some modeling last year which really didn't completely surprise me - she just had a standout personality.

Thanks a lot Sam for being a sport and doing these pictures (and to Zach for his patience and helping out). Wish you both all the very best for your futures.
