"Come said the wind to
the leaves one day,
Come o're the meadows
and we will play.
Put on your dresses
scarlet and gold,
For summer is gone
and the days grow cold."
(from a children's song of the 1880's)
Have a nice weekend!
Like I have said in the 2 previous photos of this Snowy, "It was my First Ever Encounter with a Snow Owl". I can't believe how fortunate I was to be able to actually get photos of this beauty. In the first comment I will try and place a copy of this photo without a crop.
Nehemiah 8:10 NIV Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
John 16:22 NIV So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
These are called Resurrection Ferns. They were on the old Camphor Tree out front the first year I moved here (2013) and since cut down. I cannot for the life of me remember what happened that motivated my choice in this two verses way back then ... but I'm leaving them as is. God knows ...
. . . said the hummingbird to the woodpecker . . .
I kid you not . . . this little guy is a regular on our hummingbird feeders! He's really into the sweet stuff!

The program booklet said about this performance:
The three-part performance is about raising awareness of given structures, about recognizing and visualizing them. Then dissolving them and transforming them into something new: Along the way, encounters take place, relationships with others, being accompanied, step by step.
What I remember: a wonderful place on the Neckar island under the plane trees with a view to the Neckar front of the old town Tübingenwith the Hölderlin Tower, lots of interested, curious looks, a wonderful performance.
The original name for Corncrake in Britain was Rail. John Ray wrote the first bird book in the English language in 1678 and he called it "Rail, or Daker-hen". The word Rail comes from the French râle, which is a death rattle, the gurgling or rattling sound sometimes heard in the throat of a dying person. But it is also the French word for Water Rail. Corncrake and Water Rail are similar, and were often confused, and there was even a superstitious belief that Corncrakes turned into Water Rails in winter. John Ray (1678) called them Water Rail, to distinguish them from the Rail. To differentiate the two, Corncrake later became known as Land Rail, but the original Rail (râle) referred to the rattling call of a Corncrake. The name Crake is also imitative of the sound made by Corncrakes, and the word croak is from the same root. The slang term "to croak" is still used to refer to someone dying, from the death rattle. And finally I was reading The Birds of Yorkshire by Thomas Nelson, written in 1907 when Corncrakes were still widespread in the county. He said that the children in Skipton district are forbidden by their parents to search for this bird, being warned that death is certain to follow within a year if they see one. I have several books on bird folklore and this is the only place I have seen mention of this superstition.
I photographed this Corncrake very early morning on Iona. You can see a few drops of dew. This one was right behind the Fire Station on Iona.

Mystery Dance - it said on the radio this weekend that the RSPB was part formed in response to GCGs being almost wiped out for the milliners trade - fortunately the demand for hats is now restricted to posh gels at Ascot and those decorative head wounds favoured by mothers of the bride - I think the technical term is a fascinator (fascinating why someone would want to look a prat in public?)

That's why I always loved to walk around Sidi Bou Said! Each time I go from one discovery to another, from one enchantment to another! Wait all the same. I can’t doubt that of this attraction, on many occasions, I have been subjected to the discreet attraction at the approach of one of those places where I hadn’t the design to make a stop. But this calling power was so engaging and so sweet that I turned away from the path I had planned each time to go and see, and each time my heart beat.
Yes, he was beating. 💕💟🙌💞❤️😀☕🌷
Not very strong, perhaps, but enough for this beating to be perceptible to me: more keenness in the mind and in the step. A lightweight shock ... 💕💞 💕💞
I was, without knowing why, more alert; and my road, the wise road which I had at first intended to make, was imperceptibly inflected. I was deviating. To the incomprehensible pleasure that penetrated me little by little, I guessed that a simple alley had taken place on the main thoroughfare: there are alleys and living alleys which glide along the roads and, half hidden from view, Remain on the alert. They say nothing. They are there. You see them. They look at you; sometimes, very gently, they take your foot, and if you give them a step, they pull you out of the road. God knows where! 💕💟🙌💞❤️😀☕🌷
It was funny ... I was on my way to the Reservoir, and I passed a garage sale where the guy had about fifty fishing rods out so I stopped by (this was Friday the thirteenth). When I got up to his table, he had old tackle boxes filled with beaten wooden lures, one of which was a lucky thirteen which was my Grandpa Cliff's bread and butter (it is a white plug with a red head and two treble hooks). It was ancient and exactly like his ... I really wanted it but the guy said he had to have $15 dollars for it because it was an "antique." I told him I couldn't give him that for it ( but, I did get an old MLB California Angles fitted cap with a bygone logo from him for fifty cents that fit just perfect : ) About twenty minutes later at the reservoir I met this thirteen pointer ... Lucky thirteen indeed ... in hindsight I should have offered him $13 for the lure for the trifecta.

“Good morning, Sky, Bertie; a lovely bright one too.” Said Posh Bear as he sat down beside his friends.
“It is indeed Posh, but it is a worrying one too, well for some of us.” Replied Sky.
“Why would that be, Sky?” Asked Posh.
“I have been having an enormous thunk, and I can tell you both that I am a tad concerned.”
“Poor Sky, I’m sorry to hear that Sky. What have you been thinking about? What, is wrong?” Asked Bertie.
“It’s the buzzy things Bertie. I’m so worried about the buzzy things.”
“I don’t see why Sky, they don’t hurt you and they make our honey, so what is to worry about?” Asked Posh.
“I worry about how clever they are? I mean, how good are their memories. Suppose they had all forgotten that they are supposed to flit around the flowers and then make us honey, what then?”
“I can’t see that happening Sky, they have always made sure we have enough honey.” Argued Bertie.
“I don’t know Bertie; they might forget and the we would have no honey. I was wondering if we should help them, what do you chaps think?”
“I think you are bonkers Sky. How can we help the buzzy things remember what they are supposed to do?” Asked Posh.
“I was thinking that maybe we need to begin writing notices that we can place by the flowers to tell the buzzy things to visit them and start making honey.”
“No, that would never work Sky. We can’t write in bee and they can’t understand bear, so no point in notices.” Said Bertie.
“Ah, I see your thinking Bertie, I hadn’t thought about that. So, what can we do?”
“A difficult one Sky. How about we begin keeping all our empty jars and place them by the flowers so the bees can just drop the honey straight in the jars and that’ll save us ordering on the man’s thingy machine?”
“Brilliant Bertie, you are a genius. Why didn’t I think of that? Simply brilliant, that is what we have to do from now on. We’ll even leave the labels on the jars so if the buzzy things can read, they will know why the jars have been put there.”
“It won’t work fellas, for one thing the man won’t want empty glass jars strewn all over the flower beds. Even if he didn’t mind that or notice, the buzzy things will do what they have always done and that is take the honey to their nest which is called a hive. Only there can it be turned into real honey and then placed in jars for us bears and a little bit we allow hoomans to have too.” Said Posh Bear.
Posh looked at his two friends and could see their concern and so decided to try and help them forget all this nonsense and let the buzzy things do what they are best at on their own.
“Look, how about we go to my store and I give you both a full jar of my honey and the we all go out for a long walk in the garden?”
“What a good idea Posh.” Said Sky as he winked at Bertie. “I knew you would come up with a brilliant idea eventually, Posh.”
“Yes, I agree Sky, our friend Posh is quite brilliant at times.” Agreed Bertie.
“Just not quite often enough.” Whispered Sky as he and Bertie gave a soft chuckle as Posh stood up and they followed him to where he stored his honey.
It's said that witnessing comet NEOWISE is a once in 6,800 year event, however, what does it mean if you can see it multiple times over the course of a month? Is it still "once in a..."???? Willie and I went out on multiple occasions to photograph the comet, both when it was visible at sunrise and when it was visible at sunset.
The comet NEOWISE was first discovered on March 27, 2020 by the WISE space telescope. It consists of 2 tails, one of which is blue and made of of gas and ions (called the "ion tail") and the second, which is made up of dust (the "dust tail"). Apparently a third tail was observed, which is a sodium tail. The first 2 tails (ion and dust) are visible here.
We made a few sunset attempts to see the comet but we were flustered by smoky skies from a fire a few hours south. A few friends had taken some amazing photos from Marin and we decided we would shlep up there one evening.... but I had an idea that we might be able to see it from Windy Hill Open Space Preserve in Portola Valley, so the night before our Marin outing, we set off to see if we could skip driving 2 hours north. Sure enough we were in for a treat. At sunset the fog came in and created a beautiful foreground for witnessing the comet descend. The fog also blanketed the Bay Area, reducing some of the light pollution that would have washed out the comet. Instead we got a beautiful view of the sky. I strapped on a new 105mm f/1.4 lens so I could get the most amount of light in, and we were treated to this stunner.
This is a combination of an ~85mm foreground photo with the 105mm sky photo. Yes, this is a composite (I'm not a lier or a hider of the truth).

This will be my last post of a Snowy Owl for a while. I might have said that with the last Snowy image that I posted, but I found this perch shot that I wanted to share. I took this image with foreground tan vegetation at the bottom end of the frame and I like the effect. Please view large for best Snowy Perch experience.

Later that evening, in my studio. I saw you looking in my sketchbook, looking for a story, looking for a drawing not yet photographed, searching for a hidden secret.
And what you said about colors and paint, about drawings, the secrets of the stills, the dance of the shadows in the light. The things a painter should know… I didn't hear, just looked at you, dreaming, …
But this time, no past, no memories, only the moment of being. Not freezing the moment of a scene to remember. Just empty bubbles and no paintings anymore.
Just.. the colors of orange and red.

“…Lay in bed and realized what I was: I was happy. Said the strange word happiness and realized that it was there, not as an “it” or object. It simply was. And I was that. And this morning, coming down, seeing the multitude of stars above the bare branches of the wood, I was suddenly hit, as it were, with the whole package of meaning of everything: that the immense mercy of God was upon me, that the Lord in infinite kindness had looked down on me and given me this vocation out of love, and that He had always intended this, and how foolish and trivial had been all my fears and desperation…The only response is to go out from yourself with all that one is, which is nothing, and pour out that nothingness in gratitude that God is who He is. All speech is impertinent; it destroys the simplicity of that nothing before God by making it seem as if it had been something.”

Yes, I realise this topic has already been talked over many times on our humble photo gallery. This time however, we have another big developement in front of us.
The famous Polish ban on photography had not really been in power, no matter what any person said. You were fully permitted to photograph anything you want, as long as you were on public grounds, which is a reasonable idea. All is to change now though.
My first post in this "no photo" topic has been published on 6.02.2024, when the Polish Ministry of National Defence published a draft of the ordinance containing the description of a "Photography forbidden" sign, along with many other things. This ordinance is what is required for the photo ban to be implemented in practice, as per a law published all the way back in 2022. The draft remained all that, just a draft, up until... this very day, 3.04.2025. It is now a full-blown ordinance of the allmighty Minister himself.
The published version can be seen on the official government service Dziennik Ustaw - dziennikustaw.gov.pl/DU
The ordinance itself, numbered 432 can be seen here - dziennikustaw.gov.pl/DU/2025/432 - contains a PDF file with the ordinance and a graphical display of the sign.
From now on, any person responsible for the security of an object of critical infrastructure (whatever that means...) will be able to hang out these legal signs and there is nothing the poor citizen can do about this, even when standing on public grounds.
*The ordinance comes into effect 14 days after its publishing, you have time until the 17th of April. For real now.*

Santorini
We had always said we would never ever go to Santorini as too many tourists visit the island and we like less obvious holiday spots. Time showed that we took a flight actually to Santorini to get to Paros by ferry. And tell you what - Santorini is awe-inspiring!. There are absolutely too many tourists (here great respect for the local bus drivers and the guys who sell tickets on buses) but the unique volcanic beaches with their hot black sands, the mighty rock you see when approaching the island from the sea, the dazzling white-washed buildings cascading down the cliffs, finally he breathtaking views of the caldera and the deep blue Aegean Sea, sunsets that paint the sky with stunning hues of orange, pink, and purple - all of this makes Santorini appear as a true paradise on Earth. The magic of the island leaves a lasting impression on you
Santorini (Greek: Σαντορίνη, romanized: Santoríni, pronounced [sa(n)doˈrini]), officially Thira (Greek: Θήρα, romanized: Thíra, pronounced [ˈθira]) or Thera, is a Greek island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast from the mainland. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago formed by the Santorini caldera. It is the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km2 (28 sq mi) and a 2021 census population of 15,480. The municipality of Santorini includes the inhabited islands of Santorini and Therasia, as well as the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi and Christiana. The total land area is 91 km2 (35 sq mi). Santorini is part of the Thira regional unit.
The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred about 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of metres deep.
It is the most active volcanic centre in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, though what remains today is chiefly a water-filled caldera. The volcanic arc is approximately 500 km (300 mi) long and 20 to 40 km (12 to 25 mi) wide. The region first became volcanically active around 3–4 million years ago, though volcanism on Thera began around 2 million years ago with the extrusion of dacitic lavas from vents around Akrotiri.

Looking west northwest down over the western edge of the town of Brian Head, Utah (located at the 9,700 foot elevation, Brian Head is the highest town in Utah) - past Cedar Breaks Nat'l Monument towards the mountains of southwestern Utah and eastern Nevada. Some notes in the image.
Brian Head Peak, at 11,312 feet (3,448 m) high is the highest peak on the Markagunt Plateau and in Iron County in southwestern Utah.
Brian Head Peak is located 11 miles east of Cedar City, 10 miles south of Parowan and just north of Cedar Breaks National Monument in Dixie National Forest.
The town of Brian Head at the western base of the mountain is the location of the Brian Head Ski Resort.
This part of the mountain was untouched by last year's wildfire - the dead, gray (grey) trees were killed by the years of drought and then the bark beetle infestation.
