The Jupiter factory in Pripyat is a legend. The official history is alleged that they made cassette recorders and other minor parts, but most of its shops made different products. Secretly (allegedly) in the factories they were developing and assembling military computers and “black boxes”, those products were mysteriously named “Product No:”. It is not officially known what the products were used for but We can only assume that most of them were used for military submarines, fighters and even in the space industry.
The dimensions of the factory are huge. While the majority of the population of Pripyat were working at the Power plant, the remaining residents were employed by this factory. Jupiter had been functioning up until the moment when power generation was halted at the Powerplant. Chernobyl NPP was the main source of power for the factory.
Today it is abandoned. Even though people left it not so long ago, it still has many Soviet machines, devices and other stuff.
Named for the nearby Pripyat River, Pripyat was founded on 4 February 1970, the ninth nuclear city in the Soviet Union, for the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It was officially proclaimed a city in 1979, and had grown to a population of 49,360 before being evacuated a few days after the 26 April 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
Though Pripyat is located within the administrative district of Ivankiv Raion, the abandoned city now has a special status within the larger Kiev Oblast (province), being administered directly from Kiev. Pripyat is also supervised by Ukraine's Ministry of Emergencies, which manages activities for the entire Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
Access to Pripyat, unlike cities of military importance, was not restricted before the disaster as nuclear power stations were seen by the Soviet Union as safer than other types of power plants. Nuclear power stations were presented as being an achievement of Soviet engineering, where nuclear power was harnessed for peaceful projects. The slogan "peaceful atom" (Russian: ?????? ????, mirnyj atom) was popular during those times. The original plan had been to build the plant only 25 km (16 mi) from Kiev, but the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, among other bodies, expressed concern about it being too close to the city. As a result, the power station and Pripyat were built at their current locations, about 100 km (62 mi) from Kiev. After the disaster the city of Pripyat was evacuated in two days.

Some new faces, some old, made new friends and generally we were in our elements.
Rhetorical question but did we have a blast? You bet!
Amazing group, top guys. Till the next time!

In the Second World War on the Home Front in the United Kingdom, there was a killer that took a toll on the civilian population - but it wasn't bombing.
It was the blackout, which caused more deaths and injuries than enemy action as people were involved in accidents caused by the very difficult driving conditions. Road vehicles were made to carry heavily-masked lights to conceal them from aircraft flying above, but the resulting effect was that it was virtually impossible to see in the dark and accidents were all too frequent.
There were frequent road safety promotional campaigns all over the country including in Manchester, where we can see tram number 1029 promoting a safety exhibition covering civilian safety at home, at work and not least on the roads. 1026 would have toured the city's tram routes, and it looks as though the 'tannoy' upstairs would have been used to exhort passers-by to be safe and to visit the exhibition at Manchester Central Library. No doubt the tone of the announcements was somewhere between 'irritating' and 'patronising'!
We are not sure exactly when the photo was taken but we're going to guess at 1942, as that would make 15 May a Friday and 24 May a Sunday.

The M/T Skaw Provider is an oil/chemical tanker that has a gross tonnage of 2889 tonnes and was built in 2005 at the Selah Shipyard.
The vessel sails under the flag of Malta with the Port of Registry as Valletta. With a Call sign of 9HA3641 this Combined chemical/oil tanker has a double hull. The vessel has a length of 95.82 m a breadth (beam) of 14.20 m and a capacity of 4,719 m3
In the background is the The Port of Southampton which is a passenger and cargo port in the central part of the south coast of England. The modern era in the history of the Port of Southampton began when the first dock was inaugurated in 1843. The port has been owned and operated by Associated British Ports since 1982, and is the busiest cruise terminal and second largest container port in the UK.
The port is ten miles (16 km) inland, between the confluence of the rivers Test, (on the left) Itchen (on the right) and the head of the mile-wide drowned valley known as Southampton Water. The mouth of the inlet is protected from the effects of foul weather by the mass of the Isle of Wight, which gives the port a sheltered location. Additional advantages include a densely populated hinterland and close proximity to London, and excellent rail and road links to the rest of Britain which bypass the congestion of London.
The average tidal range is approximately 5 feet (1.5 metres), with 17 hours per day of rising water thanks to the port's "double tides". These allow the largest container and cruise ships access to the port for up to 80 per cent of the time, according to the container terminal operator DP World Southampton. The effect is a result of tidal flow through the English Channel: high tide at one end of the Channel (Dover) occurs at the same time as low tide at the other end (Land's End). Points near the centre have one high water as the tidal swell goes from left to right, another as it then goes from right to left. Neither is as high as the one at each end.
The principal berths are divided into three areas, The Old Dock at the junction of the Rivers Test and Itchen consisting of berths 20–49; The New Dock, known as the Western Dock, built by the Southern Railway consisting of Berths 101–110; and the Container Terminal consisting of berths 200–207. The last two are constructed on reclaimed land.

A couple of weeks back, I took only film downtown and happened to take a handful of really awesome photos. Unfortunately, I had not advanced the film all the way so the pictures only existed in the realm of my mind. One of them was a cyclist on State Street, with awesome shades hunched over on his bike after a hard ride.
Fast forward to present day where I just so happened to be out snapping pictures while out on a lake loop, and I came across this fellow with cool shades resting. He complimented me on my bike and I back at him, and I told him I liked his look and asked "can I take your picture?" He gave a big smile and said, "Yes but I feel we've had this conversation before." Sure enough, he remembered me snapping his picture two weeks previous. Madison is such a small world and cycling seems to bring things full circle more times then not for me.
As we had more time today and I wasn't shooting film, I learned that Mauricio only recently took up cycling in the last few years for mental health and physical fitness. Hailing from Costa Rica he's still getting used to winter. Allowing him to recapture him, I have included him in my (608)strangers project as well as the 100 strangers group here on Flickr. While I took his picture before that was just a random snap that never got to see the light of day. This just goes to show you that you never know who you may cross paths with and remember to keep!

Brave little tomboy Clover ain't so tough afterall! Heehee! Takes a boss sometimes to put one in their place!!
I was up North this past weekend, and one of the things we always do there is go to the shooting range. My brother-in-law is a really good shot with his 9mm, so I proposed that I would hold a clay pigeon up, and he would shoot it out of my hand. At first he didn't want to do it, but I said I had just watched him hit the pigeon 7 times out of 10, and I thought those were pretty good odds. He consented.
So, I set up my camera for rapid fire, and put it on my tripod. As I stood 20 feet down range, his brother held the camera trigger down and Carl shot the clay.
In hind sight, this might have been a little foolish, but I liked how the picture came out at the moment of impact, so it was all worth it. I made a diptych out of the last frame before impact so you could see that his target was actually quite large, and thus, I was never in too much danger.
I still have all of my fingers, although they did sting for a bit afterward. I tried to have my "calm" face on, but that's as close as I could get. If I had a faster camera, it would have been cool to see the bullet.

As tornado sirens were going off for a few hours we took shelter in our basement. In the background my wife can be seen checking the tornado reporting on our the local tv stations. Luckily we did not get hit, but some other nearby towns were not so lucky. I had my Leica M9 with me and took this photo to document the moment.
A little shot at Bahamas Memories resort
The Bahamas became an independent Commonwealth realm in 1973, retaining Queen Elizabeth II as its monarch. In terms of gross domestic product per capita, the Bahamas is one of the richest countries in the Americas (following the United States and Canada). Its economy is based on tourism and finance.[10]

I was chasing the sunset by mode of four wheels after taking the month of February off to recover from lingering knee issues. Low and behold, Madison cyclist @c_poly was there to enjoy the stunning site to behold. Of course a photo had to be taken to document the occasion.
Maspalomas lifeguards don’t just keep watch — they own the beach in bold red. From their lookout perch they scan the shoreline with calm professionalism, the only splash of colour in an otherwise muted palette. Whether the Atlantic is behaving or throwing a tantrum, these guys are the steady presence you’re very glad to have nearby.

In November 2005, I took an AMTRAK Train from Tampa Union Station in Florida to Hamlet, North, Carolina to attend a Summer Convention of the ACL/SAL Historical Society in and around the Hamlet Area Hamlet Metro Area, One of the sites we visited was CSX Hump Classification Yard Hamlet.
Tower Mailing Address: 127 CSX Drive, Marks Creek, NC 28345"
This Yard is relies on Gravity, a Ladder of Switches and Speed Retarders to assemble trains destined for all parts of the US and Canada on an assortment of tracks, one track for each destination. or Intermediate Yard.In addition to the Posters & Signs, a no longer used caboose, now serves as a place for Safety Classes and Safety Signs.
These particular photographs show some of the Safety Alerting Signs all over the CSX Yard.
SAFETY is a BIG Concern in the Railroad Industry and Yards are particularly dangerous, not only due of all the traffic, but also particularly Coupling & Uncoupling Railcars, Trowing Switches, Checking the Bills of Lading for the contents being shipped, limited space, minimal Lines of Sight, setting & releasing Hand Brakes, etc. Lack of Attention, can be Fatal ! Consequently there are numerous Safety Signs, Classes, and Accident Tracking Billboards !
