Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Borough of Scarborough and English county of North Yorkshire. It is located within the historic boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire.
Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby has an established maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where Cædmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived.
The fishing port developed during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets and was, along with the nearby fishing village of Staithes, where Captain Cook learned seamanship.
Tourism started in Whitby during the Georgian period and developed further on the arrival of the railway in 1839. Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by its proximity to the high ground of the North York Moors National Park, its Heritage Coastline and by its association with the horror novel Dracula. Jet and alum were mined locally.
Whitby Jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians, became fashionable during the 19th century.
The earliest record of a permanent settlement is in 656, when as Streanæshealh it was the place where Oswy, the Christian king of Northumbria, founded the first abbey, under the abbess Hilda. The Synod of Whitby was held there in 664. In 867, the monastery was destroyed by Viking raiders. Another monastery was founded in 1078. It was in this period that the town gained its current name, Whitby from "white settlement" in Old Norse.
In the following centuries Whitby functioned as a fishing settlement until, in the 18th century, it developed as a port and centre for shipbuilding and whaling, the trade in locally mined alum, and the manufacture of Whitby jet jewellery.
The abbey ruin at the top of the East Cliff is the town's oldest and most prominent landmark. Other significant features include the swing bridge, which crosses the River Esk and the harbour, which is sheltered by the grade II listed East and West piers.
The town's maritime heritage is commemorated by statues of Captain Cook and William Scoresby, as well as the whalebone arch that sits at the top of the West Cliff. The town also has a strong literary tradition and has featured in literary works, television and cinema, most famously in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula.

Well I now know that God has a sense of humour. For the last few weeks I have prayed for money to pay my bills and when my wish is granted it comes in a safe that I cannot open or move.
This was so solid and heavy that it was impossible to move it.
Claverty Cottage and Clifton Hill are two remote communities in Portland, Jamaica. They are located in the Blue Mountains and are subject to many natural hazards, such as hurricanes, earthquakes and landslides. These two adjoining communities were selected by the Red Cross to benefit from a program entitled: Safer Houses Methodology.

I lay in her arms and then I sleep,
I am not scared, no tears I weep.
This woman is Mummy, or so I hear,
In her arms, I do not feel fear.

Cylindropuntia bigelovii, otherwise known as the "teddy bear cholla" or "jumping cholla," with cactus wren nest.
Cholla are some of the most interesting and beautiful plants in the Sonoran desert, particularly in the spring when in bloom with vividly colored flowers. Cylindropuntia bigelovii, while quite lovely and ethereal with backlighting, is best admired from a healthy distance. From afar, these plants look soft and fluffy, thus the familiar moniker "teddy bear" cholla. However, up close and personal, these buggers are, in a word, brutal. The branches are multi-segmented, with each segment covered in extremely sharp, barbed spines. Un unwary desert wanderer can easily rub up against the cholla, being instantly skewered by multiples spines, at which point the segment breaks free and hitchhikes along with the victim. This behavior led to the name "jumping cholla," as the slightest brush seems to dislodge a segment, leading to a vicious attack. Any attempt to remove the cholla generally leads to further impalement, not to mention severe pain. While the plant has no known toxins, the barbs cause far more discomfort than would be expected.
Some creatures of the desert put the cholla to good use for protection. Pack rats are known to employ cholla segment and spines in the construction of their dens. And some birds, such as the cactus wren, will build nests within the spines of the teddy bear cholla, as in the present photo, the avian equivalent of a gated neighborhood.
I would like to say that no photographers were injured during the making of this photo, however that would be untrue. As I wandered through this heavily cholla-fortified stretch of desert searching for an interesting subject, I was maliciously ravaged thee times by the teddy bear- I'm quite sure my expletive-laden screams were heard for some distance around as I worked to free myself of these little demon plants.

Did you know 20% of all crime is vehicle related? 22% of which takes place in car parks.
ACPO and the BPA are fighting this crime with an initiative called The Safer Parking Scheme.
The Safer Parking Scheme is owned by the Association of Chief Police Officers, run by the British Parking Association, and aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime in parking facilities.
Safer Parking status, indicated by the Park Mark® logo, is awarded to parking facilities that have met the requirements of a risk assessment conducted by the Police. These requirements mean the parking operator has put in place measures that help to deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour, thereby doing everything they can to prevent crime and reduce the fear of crime in their parking facility.
The Safer Parking Scheme development managers work with accredited police assessors to provide expertise and advice to car park operators to improve standards and deter crime.
Encourage everyone - friends, family, colleagues, and members of the public you meet every day – to look out for the Safer Parking Park Mark tick when choosing where to park. This will ensure the facility has been vetted by the Police and has measures in place to create a safe environment.
-Quality management
-Appropriate lighting
-Effective surveillance
-Clean environment
