I ducked by CN's Cory Yard this morning--it serves the large General Motors assembly plant in Delta Township, near Lansing--and found only this locomotive and a single car on the property. In contrast, the yard within the auto plant's boundaries seemed to be full. I suspect there's a problem with the exiled car....
Regardless, the loco's Illinois Central (IC) 9637, a GP38, of which there are plenty of photographs on the web in a variety of paint schemes. When Cory Yard was new we'd mostly see switchers wearing IC and GTW garb, but CN's apparently unified most everything since.
I perhaps should mention Cory's not the world's most interesting rail yard--it serves one facility, and that plant does the sorting of the "goods" before the trains are loaded. It's next door to where I worked, and for me it's been an occasional subject since it was built.

The switch off to the right leads to a previous customer, Mid-State Recovery. Mid-State began shipping construction debris in 2002 and would ship upwards of 30 plus cars a week in its heyday. This eventually led to the reactivation of the line up to Hartford through Wethersfield to interchange with CSO from 2005-2008. The collapse of the Mid-State recovery building in 2011 saw the end of regular service to Portland until Red Technologies began shipping in 2015. I was lucky enough to see the evolution of service in Portland from my first days of watching trains until now.

It's been a /long/ time since I've seen an Alco chirping around (The last ones I think I saw were a pair of the Napa Valley Wine Train locomotives on the last trip Julie & I made down to Napa Valley, but that's been maybe 17 years?)

switch on 2 was today and went really well. We're delighted with her particularly as there has been some response to sounds already.

The Blue Moment in Paris had been promising all day and the potential views from each side of the Pont Alexander III simply breathtaking, but then a large bank of dark cloud came in very fast, at precisely the wrong moment.
What to do? Well I could collapse in hysterics at the sheer unfairness of it all, or I could switch to Bulb Mode, calculate the maximum shutter speed possible for the available light while still giving a correct exposure (60 seconds), and hope the long shutter speed would blur the clouds just enough to take away the edge.
I think it worked, but only just!
i am using bootcamp 1.1 for the time beeing. Will test parallel later next week. This is the familiar windows install process....slow slow slow especially with all the patches to be downloaded after on for XP, Office....
