A pair of Mute Swans on Lake Ontario.

Thank you for viewing.

Mute swan (female) at sunset on the "étang Grand Chaux", a pond located in Saint-Nizier-le-Désert in the Dombes area, department of Ain, north of Lyon, France.

Swan, largest waterfowl species of the subfamily Anserinae, is generally classified in the genus Cygnus. There are around 7 different species of swan found around the world. The size, colour and behaviour a swan individual is largely dependent on it's species and the area in which it lives.

Today swans are a threatened species of animal mainly due to hunting and habitat loss. Pollution (mainly water pollution) is also a major reason as why the swan populations are declining.

When Charlotte & hubby visited England recently she really wanted to see some swans. Fortunately we found a lovely pair down on the River Wey who were on their best behaviour for our Canadian visitors.

New England Central GP38 #3852 leads its train west across the bridge over Swan Creek on the very western edge of Saginaw, back in 2011. The Mid Michigan RR was using the 3852 on this day, which I've been told was one of the better units they'd get from the Huron & Eastern. 3852 became HESR 2027 after the G&W merger and left the property in 2017.

'Swans form monogamous pair bonds thats usually last for life. The classic image of devotion, with their curved necks entwined in a perfect love heart. It's part of a courtship ritual, in which pairs face each other and, with a ruffle of feathers and lifted wings, bow gracefully.

Why birds mate for life isn't as romantic as it first appears, though. Considering the time needed to migrate, establish territories, incubation, and raising their young, spending extra time to attract a mate would minimize reproductive time.'

Taken at Croxall Lakes

I was quite a distance away but was fortunate to have observed a pair of mute swans in an intimate ritual.

Swan week continues.

Although it was early in April at Almsee, Austria I was not alone. I had to hurry to capture the swan before it broke up the reflections in the lake. The fog lingered as the sun rose, illuminating the snow-covered peaks of the mountains.

The photo of the swan was taken in 30.03.2024. I added it to landscape photo I took.

Shot with a Canon 5D2 and a Canon 300mm F4.0 L.

Settings: F4 at ISO 50 and 1/320 sec

Swans swimming in the lake

Portrait capture of male (cob) Mute Swan from the rear. The swans white plumage is being highlighted by early spring sunshine, and its reflection is being cast on the waters of a still lake. Photo taken in Barnet, Hertfordshire, UK in March 2015

Encompassing grace and power, the familiar Mute Swan can be seen all year round on suitable waterbodies.

The large size and bright white plumage make adult Mute Swans unmistakeable. They can be separated from the wintering swan species by their orange bill (in contrast to the yellow and black bills of Whooper and Bewick's Swans). (BTO).

My thanks to anyone who views, faves or comments on any of my photos. It is much appreciated.
