Maleta Stories
Marissa Largo - Toronto, Canada
Magkaisa Centre - Toronto, Canada
Installation, Visual Art
With the Centre for International Experience as its backdrop, a projected stop-motion animation of a woman kneeling before a closed suitcase, or maleta, is seen. Slowly, the maleta begins to unzip itself by a force still unknown. What emerges, wrapped in Filipino newspapers, is the embodiment of the histories and narratives of people who have come to this land. Facilitated by the Magkaisa Centre, participants are invited to share their "maleta stories" of how they came to be in Canada on baggage tags, which then become apart of the web-like installation affixed to the British colonial architecture of the Cumberland House, constructing a collective family tree of migration. A gallery of community-based artworks created by members of the Magkaisa Centre resides inside.
Choco-Story, located in the former Hacienda Uxmal, is an interactive museum that tells the history of cocoa and its importance to the Mayan.
Hacienda Uxmal dates back to 1673, when the Spanish government granted the Captain and Regidor Don Lorenzo de Evia a royal gift consisting of four leagues of land in order to populate it with beef cattle. In the 18th century, Don Alonso Peon and his wife Doña Leonor Cárdenas acquired the property and it converted it into a sugar mill. During the 19th century, foreign explorers traveling to Uxmal were received at the Hacienda by Don Simon Peon.

"For we live with those retrievals from childhood that coalesce and echo throughout our lives, the way shattered pieces of glass in a kaleidoscope reappear in new forms and are songlike in their refrains and rhymes, making up a single monologue. We live permanently in the recurrence of our own stories, whatever story we tell."

I saw this gentelman all through Uniontown as I was walking around. He introduced himself as Tom and asked if I would take his picture and keep it as part of my vacation. So here is Tom from Uniontown...

Adaline enjoys many hobbies, but being out in nature and fishing are her two favorites. She will bait her own hook and take off any fish she catches. She normally catches the most fish out of our family. Here she is reeling in a bluegill fish in one of our many lakes in Minnesota.
I like the colors in the photo and her shirt is very bright for the sunny day. I do not like the boat in this photo. I could redo this photo by watching the background and waiting for a better moment to take the photo.
Gpa says: This is (my) Uncle Joseph. He was the middle male of the five Yachnovich sons. He served in the Russian army--we have pictures of him, a dashing soldier with a curled mustache and full uniform. He was married to Aunt Minnie (Maria on her citizen papers) in Russia and the two of them came to America with Uncle Sam, the youngest son of the Yachnoviches, through Canada in 1923. Uncle Joe and Aunt Min settled in Ford City where he owned and managed a variety store. They had no children. Though he never served in the American armed forces, he was member of the American Legion where he wasTreasurer for Life.

Other minor factors contributed in making Iran a priority versus other countries. My current passport expired in 2008 and I wanted to avoid having the Iranian immigration stamp in my new passport. That was chiefly to dodge the probability of being interviewed by ignorant US Immigration officers when I need to pass through US airports in the future. My concern may not be valid but I have known of cases that the Pakistani immigration stamp attracted a lengthy interview and to have an Iranian stamp as well, it could be a nuisance in a country suspicious of the profiles of Iran and Pakistan.
When Bush started to talk about Iran as one of the axis of evil, though remote, there was a possibility of military confrontation. I doubt Americans could afford to attack Iran now but you never know what Israel would do if the Iranian President continues his irrational rhetoric.
