Native, cool-season, perennial, grass with slender solitary stems to 1.2 m tall that arise from slender rhizomes. Leaves are spaced along the stems. Ligules are membranes 1–2.5 mm long, with a truncate or laciniate apex. Flowerheads are contacted panicles; 0.8-5 cm long, erect, dense and ovate to oblong. Spikelets are 1-flowered and 3-5 mm long, each with an awn 3-16 mm long. Flowering is in spring and summer. Found in moist and dappled shade conditions in
woodlands and forests (especially wet sclerophyll)
and by creeks. Palatable to stock, but of minor grazing value as it contributes little biomass and is sensitive to grazing and disturbance. May cause ‘stagger’ when young due to a fungus associated with the plant.
