While exploring a deserted cove,I came across an open sea cave, where a starling had her nest - she wasn't impressed with my intrusion.

On any day, they always have a somewhat startled stare.

This action took the stare to a new level.

Wandering in the woods behind our home, we startled a Murder of Crows. They were hanging out in the old Ponderosa trees and then all at once they took to the air. What a racket !!

Alpaca in Embsay, North Yorkshire!

The Little Witch returned from an errand to find her kitchen in a state of disarray. She is happy to see a mantle surrounding her fireplace and wooden flooring going down, but it is quite a mess with chunks of dried glue all about, an enormous bottle of glue holding down some stubborn planks, and a rather ominous looking cutting tool on the floor. She wonders if it supposed to look like that?!

Progress this week:

1. Reattached the wall to the floor (it detached over this year in storage) and repainted some damaged areas

2. Finally attached the window and door to the wall

3. Added a mantle and hearth

4. Distressed the brick fireplace interior a bit

5. Started wood flooring

I should have done the floor before the mantle, but I was not sure I would do anything with the floor other than paint it or maybe do egg carton bricks. Last night I decided to go ahead and uses these remnant flooring pieces I had laying around.

A Great Gray Owl looks a little started after being attacked by a Gray Jay. I have put the photo where the jay is dive-booming the owl in the comments below.

Startled Skippy I surprised him and he grabbed a peanut and headed back to his tree, he stopped here to chatter at me on the way home, shot in North Carolina.

I'm certain this deer thought he had a nice filed to sleep in. I was sorry to have disturbed him from the goldenrod. I never saw him until he sprang out of the brush in front of me. I'm not sure who was more startled!

A young Stag is startled, as it disturbs a bird.

Occasionally Max really commits to this jump, throwing himself over it at full tilt. I can't help but think he looks a little startled in this one.

I love the bird shadow on the post. : )

The mountain roads of Oman are a joy for an experienced driver to maneuver. The cliffs seem to drop off into step canyons. Families seem to picnic at the very edge of immense danger. This picture was taken close to Wadi Nakheer, the highest point on the Arabian peninsula (3000 meters) and the Grand Canyon of Oman.

A horse that appears out of the total darkness in your dream, close before you even know it. A nightmarish monster or an archetype come to startle, or fascinate, your consciousness into some kind of awakening ... It's up to you.

I have no idea what startled them, but it was a wonderful surprise. I was trying to photograph sitting ducks. I know I didn’t startle them, because they flew right at me.

I'm always amazed at how striking these birds look when I first spot one. Something about how the black and bright orange contrast against each other and the background foliage. Which is how they got their common name I would guess. Definitely one of my favorite warblers.

We lost our power a few nights ago when an electrical transformer blew in our neighborhood. While I was hunting for the lantern in the bookcase, I noticed this little guy and he seemed to be super surprised about the total darkness being illuminated by the flash!!

Crane startled by my daughter screaming.

This girl was fantastic. After startling her by grabbing her portrait she explained she spent all day dancing on the spot, listening to Duran Duran on her Walkman to wile away the boredom. Walkman. Love it :)

Please view on black - thank you.

Today I took my high school classmate to see wildlife at Don Edwards. I guess these birds were not content to see us getting close. As soon as one white pelican took off, the rest of the birds took off in droves as well. It was quite a sight when that happened.

A startled polar bear cub looks up in surprise as a large raven passes overhead, silhouetted against the blue sky. Its sibling chews on a chain. The inshore ice and the ice-free waters of Hudson Bay can be seen in the distance, Churchill, Manitoba. The cubs are waiting for freeze-up to go out on the ice with their mother to hunt seals.
