Dirleton Castle still stands in a glorious ruined state with some wonderful chambers and open spaces to explore. The gardens and surrounding greenery bring a great look both to the castle and the curtain wall and decorative towers. The tower closest to the road had a scarecrow set up as a part of the village festival. In taking a dark picture of the tower my camera was determined not to miss the detail of modern roads and paths, of white fences and houses and please do not mention the flag pole that wished to look wonky and challenge the viewer to think that something was not as it should be. Thankfully for my Dark pictures there is Lightroom and Photoshop. Goodbye to roads with white lines and hopefully hello to a dark picture that has less newness and a touch more timelessness if that is possible?

Shortly after arriving in the Masai Mara we learnt that some lions had killed a hippo calf. We went in search of the kill site only to find a stand-off between a Lappet-faced Vulture and a Black-backed Jackal!
Lappet-faced Vulture Torgos tracheliotos
This is an Old World vulture belonging to the bird order Accipitriformes, which also includes eagles, kites, buzzards and hawks. It is the only member of the genus Torgos. It is not closely related to the superficially similar New World vultures, and does not share the good sense of smell of some members of that group.
The Lappet-faced Vulture is a huge species, ranking as the longest and largest winged vulture.
Black-backed Jackal Canis mesomelas
The Black-backed Jackal is a canid native to Africa. Compared to other members of the genus Canis, the black-backed jackal is a very ancient species, and has changed little since the Pleistocene, being the most basal canine alongside the closely related side-striped jackal. It is a fox-like canid with a reddish coat and a black saddle that extends from the shoulders to the base of the tail. It is a monogamous animal, whose young may remain with the family to help raise new generations of pups. The black-backed jackal is not a fussy eater, and will feed on small to medium sized animals, as well as plant matter and human refuse.

Normally, wildebeests and zebras get along well. The wildebeest herds follow the (smarter?) zebras. But this gnu seemed to be in a bad mood.

Le train 402 vers Mont-Joli en attente du 559 vers Rivière-du-Loup à la voie d'évitement Sacré-Coeur. Le 402 a dû attendre une dizaine de minutes avant que le 559 se pointe le nez, ce qui n'est pas fréquent puisque normalement c'est plutôt l'inverse. Néanmois ça m'a permis de prendre une belle prise avec le coucher de soleil!

Mont-Joli bound train 402 waiting for Rivière-du-Loup bound train 559 at Sacré-Coeur siding. Train 402 had to wait over 10 minutes for 559 to arrive, which is usually the opposite. It thankfully allowed me to take a good picture of the train with the beautiful sunset !

I decided to give stand development another try. I wasn't 100% happy with the results so far, but I couldn't just sit down and watch. So to speak, that is.
Having read that stand seem to be working better with medium format than with 35mm, well I thought "whatta hell let's go 35mm then."
Basically, everything I pretty much read, I broke.
Hence, I used a 35mm T-Max 400 (pushed at ISO 1600) with Rodinal, 2 hours. And I absolutely loved it.
What a ride.

I guess one could say, conservatively that there are maybe 100,000 pictures a day taken of the Golden Gate. It's an icon, well placed, and even on the most blustery day, it stands as a metaphore for all that is good, strong, well designed and built.
In the presence of the bridge, 'she' somehow seems alive. The vehicle sounds clamor, rattle, and roar, echoeing across the "Gate", the mile wide span that seems preposterous to bridge. With her feet anchored on the bay bedrock and her head in the clouds of fog, misted and damp all the year long - there she majestically stands, strong and true.

It's so rare to see a favorite face of mine, Block Berthold, in use that when I do I feel compelled to document.
You just never see it. Roman Cieślewicz was partial to it; Catherine Zask (who studied with Cieślewicz) has used it plenty. I love it. I love the unevenness (almost clumsiness), the compact descenders and ascenders.

Out goofing with the wide end of my camera, always fun to loom over it when pointing at the sky! This is at a public beach in Seattle called Golden Gardens. I saw the light filtering through the tree's and knew this would be a fun shot!

I had to visit the dentist yesterday to get an old root canal redone, the dentist was so nice, but I always feel such relief and exhilaration when I am finally out of the chair :) So we got a frappuccino and walked around Terra Nova Park in Richmond. It was very warm but with a nice breeze,
met some crows and some magnificent thistles that were as high as an elephant's eye :)
