Short stairway to heaven.

In reality, this is the little beach down the street from my apartment that I go to all summer long to tan and relax. Sandy demolished the beach in October, along with the entire parking lot and basically the whole shoreline. This little stairway obviously drifted to shore. I find it so strange. It wasn't there the other week. Very odd, and a rarity for me to do a black & white.

View of Kaneohe and the East Shore from the Haiku Stairs

The famous Haiku Stairs on the windward side of Oahu. Access is currently "restricted". However, if you know of a way to get around the fence without damaging it or disturbing the neighborhood, one hell of an adventure awaits...

Warning: there is a security guard that posts up at the base of the stairs. He rides a moped or something up the trail and sits under a canopy. He usually gets there around 6 am, so you'd have to start REALLY early. The hike is not easy either...there are over 4000 steps!

Waarschijnlijk Cuba's meest herbouwde kerk. De eerste kerk werd in 1516 gebouwd, het huidige bouwwerk dateert van 1922. Branden, plunderingen en aardbevingen zorgden ervoor dat de kerk vele malen herbouwd en gerestaureerd moest worden.

Taken for the Active Assignment Weekly! group. This week's assignment: Sky:

Pretty much everything has been done before with skies. I tried to capture interesting clouds, sunsets, sunrises etc. Today I just played around and decided to shoot the sun itself (yes it hurts the sensor and the eyes I suppose) when something interesting came up. I liked the allignment of the lens reflections with the clouds. So I decided to keep the picture and play with it.

What it took:

By turning the picture around you get the illusion it was taken above the clouds and the sun is nicely placed by the golden rule. I then just played a little with de-noising and curves and gave the whole thing a frame and a title (something you get killed for in the DeleteMe-group, hopefully not here).

could not believe my good fortune. i got access to an alley that's a private tagging ground. i'd only seen part of it from the outside before. it. was. awesome! and worth the almost frost bite i got while shooting. it will be a really long wait for this film!

Commemorating the Bethnal Green disaster of 3rd March 1943 in which 173 civilians died.

The Palace of the Grand Masters (Castello).

The palace was first built by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem on the site of a 7th century Byzantine fortress. After its dereliction during the Turkish occupation, it was largely destroyed by the explosion of the powder magazine in 1856. The restoration of the palace with many alterations was carried out between 1937 and 1940 under the supervision of the Iralian architect Vittorio Mesturino and the building was adorned with murals by P. Gaudenzi and F.Vellan.

This is another shot of the first building you reach on your climb to the top of the Haiku Stairs. Also notice the H3 highway in the lower right corner ..... giving some perspective to the elevation gain at this point. Oahu Hawaii December 2010

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold, and she's buying a stairway to Heaven...

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold

And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed

With a word she can get what she came for.

Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure

'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.

In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,

Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.

Ooh, it makes me wonder,

Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,

And my spirit is crying for leaving.

In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,

And the voices of those who stand looking.

Ooh, it makes me wonder,

Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune

Then the piper will lead us to reason.

And a new day will dawn for those who stand long

And the forests will echo with laughter.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,

It's just a spring clean for the May queen.

Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run

There's still time to change the road you're on.

And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,

The piper's calling you to join him,

Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know

Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road

Our shadows taller than our soul.

There walks a lady we all know

Who shines white light and wants to show

How everything still turns to gold.

And if you listen very hard

The tune will come to you at last.

When all are one and one is all

To be a rock and not to roll.
