St. Aidan's Church

Standing under a sky full of stars, this beautiful red brick church, built in 1954 after its 80-year-old predecessor was lost to fire, is a landmark of history and faith in the Ferguson Valley. Surrounded by rolling green hills, renowned wineries, and incredible local food, it’s a must-visit with family and friends.

Captured in this night panorama, the church stands quietly beneath our home galaxy, a reminder of time, light, and the stories written in both stone and starlight.

A very brief trip to Pembrokeshire allowed us all to get out and enjoy a couple of days on the beaches, and me to get back out with the camera. An early start took me to St Govans. Freezing cold and very windy but a beautiful start to the day.

St Mary Magdalene's was founded in the 12th century – and still has its massive tub font from that date. Originally, a wharf ran just outside the south door and was used for transporting goods. This church was built to serve the bargemen.

A gable end Mural by Smug reimagines St Mungo, bringing his master's Robin back to life. This is 'the bird that never flew' in the rhyme 'The Bird that never flew,

The Tree that never grew,

The Bell that never rang,

The Fish that never swam.' that tells the account of his miracles and which forms the basis of Glasgow's coat of arms.

The St Kilda Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes hirtensis) is a subspecies of Wren that is only found on St Kilda, a small archipelago about 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides. The population of St Kilda Wren is currently about 225 pairs but it came perilously close to extinction in Victorian times. As the largest and most distinctive British subspecies it was highly sought-after by museums and collectors, who paid crofters for their corpses and their eggs. It is noticeably larger than "ordinary" Wrens, and seems to lack warmth in the plumage, apart from some rufous at the base of the tail. It is also barred across the upperparts rather than just the flight feathers. The pale belly also had numerous black spots and short streaks that I have never noticed on British Wrens. Its bill also looked disproportionately large and orange. So overall it is a large, grey-brown bird with much barring. If you think it just looks like any old Wren, here's one I photographed in the Peak District which is subspecies indigenus, found throughout most of mainland Britain: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/51155289704/in/dateposted/ Note the warm rufous plumage and lack of barring apart from the flight feathers.

I photographed this St Kilda Wren singing its heart out on the coast of Hirta, the largest island in the St Kilda group and the name that gave rise to the subspecies name hirtensis.

The façade of St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle is a stunning example of Gothic architecture, rich in detail and verticality. Dominated by two soaring towers, the western façade features intricate stone tracery, pointed arches, and a large rose window above the central portal. The portal itself is richly decorated with sculpted tympanums depicting biblical scenes, flanked by tall niches housing statues of saints. Flying buttresses and ornate pinnacles enhance the dramatic upward thrust of the structure, emphasizing its sacred grandeur..

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Apotheosis of St. Louis is a statue of King Louis IX of France, namesake of St. Louis, Missouri, located in front of the Saint Louis Art Museum in Forest Park. Part of the iconography of St. Louis, the statue was the principal symbol of the city between its erection in 1906 and the construction of the Gateway Arch in the mid-1960s.

It did look beautiful through the open door tonight, and I was not disappointed. Then the guy taking care of the church kindly showed me the different lighting they have (thanks again!). Whoever designed them did a very fine work.

Thank you everyone for your visits, faves and comments, they are always appreciated :)

Here's a shot taken yesterday. The subject is the village church of St Johns, Wentbridge. Despite its appearance the church is a new addition to the village having been built as recently as 1874. It has however, replaced other older churches that went back as far as 1030 AD.

St. Lorenz is a Gothic church building in Nuremberg, south of the River Pegnitz

Construction of the three-aisled basilica began around 1250, and the late Gothic hall choir was completed in 1477. The roof and vault were badly damaged in the Second World War and were restored.

The very important late Gothic furnishings were largely preserved through storage.

Since the Reformation, the St. Lorenz Church, along with the Sebaldus Church, has been one of the two large Protestant city churches in Nuremberg, both of which belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria, which is otherwise a Catholic-dominated federal district.

St. Peter's Basilica.

Rome, Italy

In St. Nikolai's in Flensurg, the light increases as one approaches the altar, because the expanded distance between the columns allows more light from the main windows to enter the nave. On bright days the sun paints colourful patterns on the floor, the pillars and the people.

A 16th century Jesuit Catholic Church in Munich, Bavaria. It is, apparently, the largest Renaissance church plus the first to be built north of the Alps. It has a relatively nondescript frontage in the main pedestrianised street but is wonderful once inside.
