OPALA SS

PRIMEIRA LEVA TINHA MOTOR 4100

SEIS CILINDROS E 140 CV

A Chrysler dispunha do Dodge Dart e Charger RT e a Ford do Maverick.

“Daí surge a linha SS.

Although the name MacBrayne dominates the subject, no mention of West Highland coastal shipping would be complete without a reference to McCallum Orme's two steamers, the Hebrides and the Dunara Castle.

Seen here is the Hebrides built 1898. McCO merged with McB in 1948 and the Hebrides continued until scrapped in 1955.

Her ship's bell was for a while displayed in the Harris Hotel in Tarbert, Isle of Harris (a regular port of call for the Hebrides) but is now displayed on Caledonian MacBrayne's current vessel to serve Tarbert, also called MV Hebrides as seen here. For contrast here is a picture of the current Hebrides.

Star Crusier SS Aurelius for the space saga 'Beyond Sol'.

SS Aurelius was one of hundreds of cruisers in The Confederation fleet built on the accomplished Markov hull. SS Aurelius was built before The Great War during the Age Of Colinization. It was then used for exploring less known asteroids and asteroid fields. SS Aureliues almost completely lack thrusters which significantly reduces manueverability in the asteroid fields. Instead the hull was reinforced and an artillery piece was mounted to able clearing a path in "rough terrain". Outside of the asteroid field the ship relies on it's fleet of service ships for precision manouvering.

The four plasma rockets are able to propel the ship to very high velocities but can only fire it's rocket engines a few times before they are spent. That get's you to a couple of asteroid fields and back, but not much more.

In the service of the Confederation SS Aurelius was used more for millitary purposes. The ship was equipped with two defensive laser turrets to protect the vulnerable opening in the front and the main engine was upgraded to an ion propulsion engine (Class II) to increase the ships short range propulsion. Inside the protection of a fleet the ship may be usefel to take out sattelites and assist the more fearsome ships. But on her own SS Aurelius was not capable of inflicting much damage. It was probably for this reason the Confederacy hade given command of this ship to Commander L. They did not fully trust his loyalty towards the Confederation.

A model of the passenger cargo liner SS Gelria at the Glasgow Transport Museum, 2 March 2007.

The Gelria was built by Alexander Stephen & Sons, Govan, being launched and completed in 1913 for the Royal Dutch Line. She measured 541 ft x 65.8 ft x 35 ft and weighed 13,870 tons gross. The ship had 10,500 ihp quadruple expansion, steam reciprocating engines and two screws which gave her a service speed of 17.5 kts.

The Gelria was built for the Amsterdam – South America service. In 1935 she was sold to the Trieste Line and renamed SS Gradisca. In 1937 she was used as a troopship and a hospital ship in the Abyssinian War.

In 1940 when Italy entered WWII she was requisitioned by the Italian Navy and converted to a hospital ship. When Italy surrendered in 1943 the German Navy seized her, continuing to use her as a hospital ship but was soon captured by a British destroyer. The Royal Navy then used her as a troopship but in 1946 she ran aground on the Greek island of Gavdos and sank. She was salvaged in 1947 but laid up unrepaired until scrapped in 1950.

The SS Australis docked at Southampton in 1973.

(from an old slide).

Launched in 1940 as the SS America. Called up for service by the US navy, and became USS West Point in 1941.

Became the America again in 1946-64.

Sold to the Chandris grp. in 1964 and remamed the Austalis until 1978. Then sold, and became the America again for a short while.

Then SS Italis 1978-80.

SS Noga 1980-84,

SS Alferdoss 1984-93.

SS America Star 1994.

Ran aground in the Canary Islands while being towed in 1994.

A sad end to a ship with so much history, especially during the war years.

Well worth checking her history on Wikipedia. Either as America or Australis.
