A very famous puffer from Neil Muro's - The Para Handy Tales - a highly successful TV series in Scotland and novel. All about the hapless crew of the Vital Spark who played their trade around the Scottish Islands moving cargo of various types including Whisky to & fro to Glasgow. Much impressed with the performance of my new toy the Sigma 24mm Art Lens which seems to see more than the other lens I have been using up till now.
For this week's Macro Monday theme "Hot or Cold". Making metal catch on fire.

- The day I stopped smoking I removed all the sparkwheels from the lighters that were lying around in the house
- A spark wheel is made of serrated, hardened steel wire. When it is rotated with sufficient speed and force, it will strike a bar of flint within the lighter, creating a spark.

VITAL SPARK, (ex-EILEAN EISDEAL, ex-ELSEDA, ex-VIC 72), was built by Brown's Shipyard, Hull, in 1944, and was sold out of naval service at Devonport Dockyard (where she had been a stores carrier) in 1968, and was then motorised and renamed ELSEDA, based at Troon as a cargo vessel. In 1972, she was bought by an owner based on the Isle of Mull, and worked around the islands dredging coal from sunken vessels. In 1984, she was sold to an owner of Easdale Island, near Oban, and was renamed EILEAN EASDEAL to run a inter-island cargo service around the Western Isles until 1994 (when the Scottish Office withdrew its subsidy for Scottish Shipping). In 2001, she was brought to the Inveraray Maritime Museum, where she still is, and in 2006, she was re-registered as VITAL SPARK, the name of the ficitional puffer that appeared in the Para Handy books by Neil Munro.

If you take a journey to Loch Fyne and the historic town of Inverary, take a wee trip along to the famous old harbour and see the Vital Spark, it is a rather famous old puffer that used to travel up and down the length of these waters on the west coast of Scotland.
Forty years tucked away, my wife's treasured LP collection finally emerged from storage, sparked by a new turntable gifted at Christmas. Among them, a cherished 1968 double album: The Beatles' "White Album," featuring the timeless "Blackbird." This iconic song, a personal favorite and a musical touchstone, has resonated across generations, inspiring covers from Judy Collins, Neil Diamond, and Billy Preston, to its appearance on "Glee." Most recently, Beyoncé's 2024 rendition on "Cowboy Carter" propelled "Blackbird" to its highest-ever position on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Red-winged Blackbird:
A stocky, broad-shouldered blackbird with a slender, conical bill and a medium-length tail. Red-winged Blackbirds often show a hump-backed silhouette while perched; males often sit with tail slightly flared.
Male Red-winged Blackbirds are hard to mistake. They're an even glossy black with red-and-yellow shoulder badges. Females are crisply streaked and dark brownish overall, paler on the breast and often show a whitish eyebrow.
Male Red-winged Blackbirds do everything they can to get noticed, sitting on high perches and belting out their conk-la-ree! song all day long. Females stay lower, skulking through vegetation for food and quietly weaving together their remarkable nests. In winter Red-winged Blackbirds gather in huge flocks to eat grains with other blackbird species and starlings.

Inverary - the birthplace of the author Neil Munro, who wrote about sea captain Para Handy and his boat Vital Spark. Some of his stories were made into a TV series and it would be nice to think that this is the boat from the series, but apparently it’s not… that one is on the Clyde. It seems that this one has been re-named, maybe as as a tribute to the author, all a bit of a mystery.
