Phycitinae sp., to MV light, Aranda, ACT, 16/17 November 2010

Was earlier identified as Ephestia elutella (Hübner, 1796) but boldness of pattern, straight, perpendicular, transverse first cross-line and strongly jagged preterminal line do not fit this species well. Two separate individuals were caught in 2008 and 2010 and both have this highly distinctive appearance much different from the plain, worn appearance of elutella.

Early next day as we hunted for Pediocactus sileri we found several plants of a huge coryphantha, my guess one of the vivipara varieties. I knew where to find sileri on Indian lands but Indians don't like trespassers. We ran out of time looking for this one and decided to turn back.

Not a bright yellow but not unpleasant

I found these small creatures on a piece of wood from a tree that had fallen down the back.

I went back down today and found them in the same spot so decided to bring them up to the house along with a couple of very small ones I also found under the bark on another piece of wood from the same tree.

Based on where I found them, I am starting to think that the reason I don't normally see them is because they live under the bark on the dead wood at the top of the tree.

Anyway, I put the ones I brought up into one of the 'kid's' old fish tanks along with the bits of wood etc I found them on. I will keep an eye on them and see what happens...

Nudibranchs are a group of sea slugs characterized by having no shell, thus having their gills exposed. The name in latin, nudibranchia means precisely that: nudi (nude, exposed) + branchia (gills).

Instead of the protective shell, the nudibranchs use other intricate defense mechanisms and that's one of the reasons they are such an interesting group to study. Not to mention their exquisite appearance.
