A swift way to reach the airport! Fortunately the A1 didn't have much longer to give incoming visitors their first experience of London Transport. The bus was transferred to Turnham Green in 1976, and despite a number of other moves and a recert, may not have seen further use. It headed to PVS in late 86.

The Lajta/SMS Leitha en route from Szentendre to Százhalombatta

Budapest, Hungary

26.04.2018

The Lajta monitor museum ship (ex SMS Leitha - SMS: Seiner Majestät Shiff, the german equivalent of HMS) is the last surviving warship of the imperial-royal Austro-Hungarian Navy. She was built in the 1870's as a river monitor, specially designed for the river Danube. Leitha and her sister ship, SMS Maros served until 1918. They fought during the occupation of Bosnia (1878) and in the Great War. After the war Leitha served in the Red Army of the Hungarian Soviet Republic and was renamed Lajta (the Hungarian name of the river Leitha). According to the peace agreement of Trianon (1920) the new Kingdom of Hungary was not allowed to have warships, so the Lajta was sold and was rebuilt into an excavator ship. She worked on the Danube until the 1970's. A few enthusiasts found her in a very bad shape at the end of the 80's and rebuilt her to reflect Leitha's shape in the 1880's.

A Leitha rövid ideig a Tanácsköztársaság fegyveres erejében is harcolt, amikor is átkeresztelték Lajtára. A Trianoni Békeszerződés megtiltotta, hogy a Magyar Királyság monitorokat tartson hadrendben, így kavicskotró hajóvá alakították és eladták civil vállalkozóknak. Évtizedekig dolgozott a Dunán, míg végül lelkes civilek a '80-as évek végén az újpesti kikötőben megtalálták a rozsdásodó hajótestet. 2010-re sikerült felújítani, és 2014-ben került méltó helyére; a Parlament előtti Dunapartra. A Lajta az 1. Honvéd Tűzszerész és Hadihajós Ezred Hadihajós osztályának tiszteletbeli zászlóshajója.

In 2002, more than 20 years after the the last AEC Swift was withdrawn in London, quite a few were having a busy retirement in the Maltese sun. This one, climbing the hill to Mdina, claimed to be both an 'AEC' and a 'Leyland'. Possibly it had been fitted with a Leyland unit when it was converted to UNDERFLOOR engine!

Odd how the Maltese engineers could make them work when the London ones couldn't......

V714 TVV 'George'

1999 Ford Transit M8

Simpson (SMS Executive Travel), Towcester

Towcester, 18 May 2002

The only SMS vehicle ever known to have carried a name ('George' on the front passenger door), V714 TVV contrasts with the Tourneos by being a more basic Transit eight-seater (a 100 model, indicating a 1-tonne payload) operated from 1999 to 2004. At this time the basic vehicles such as this were white with SMS Minibuses fleetnames, SMS Executive Travel and silver paint being reserved for higher-specification minicoaches.

Towcester, 2 April 2011

Another interesting local operator has disappeared from the roads with SMS X Trav going into liquidation. After years of operating minibuses, this Touro was the company's first brand new full-size coach; it was delivered in silver and carried several different styles of vinyls over the years but is seen here after a repaint in the white livery adopted in the 2010s. It was sold in 2015 but didn't go far, moving to Poynters of Northampton.

The crew of today's SMS Railroad Pureland job poses for a portrait near the end of their day: Engineer Rick Risko, conductor James Gouldey, and brakeman Jim Baur. They're leaving the 554 here at the stone transloading facility so tomorrow's early crew can go to work pulling and spotting the loads over the unloading conveyor. In a moment, these three railroaders will climb aboard the 9069 for the quick ride back to SMS headquarters.

Towcester, 18 May 2002

SMS's licence was originally in the name of Stuart Martin Simpson as a sole trader, becoming SMS Executive Travel Ltd in 2003 and SMS X Trav Ltd in 2009. The fleet included several non-PSV Tourneos, most of which were signwritten so this anonymous example may in fact have been part of the associated Silverstone Vehicle Hire operation.

My interpretation of the famous German WWI cruiser, the SMS Emden. I always liked the colour scheme of this old ship and how it didn't have turrets laid out as you would see on a modern ship. I managed to include the sponson guns aswell, giving it that unique, WWI feel. Feel free to download the model or use the instructions here :
