New to Shearings

Until 2005 SMS had been content just operating minibuses so the sight of this full-size coach sitting in the depot in Golden Boy colours was quite a shock. Asking at the office confirmed it was one of a pair that had just been purchased for a first venture into coach operation, which proved successful as by the time of closure the fleet consisted mainly of large vehicles with only a handful of minibuses.

Always a welcome sight at the open weekend is SMS 120P the preserved Daimler Fleetline with Alexander AD type body, new to Alexander (Midland) in 1976 and seen here on Broad Street about to take up duties on one of the last runs of the day to Killermont Street.

I don't know what these are... they look like they might be made to prevent ramming by vehicles? Just outside the Five Points subway station. I just love the way these 3D plus signs look.

The newer of the ex Golden Boy Volvos received a silver livery and an SMS cherished registration. These vehicles obviously generated enough business in just over a year to justify a brand new coach as they were both traded in for the Touro CS56 SMS, subsequently passing to Esk Valley of Whitby.

Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are truly endless.

No speech or words are used, no sound is heard; yet their message goes out to all the world and is heard to the ends of the earth. God made a home in the sky for the sun.

This special side loader was the oldest member of the SMS fleet prior to the last Willoughby contract wrapping up. Truck 308 here is a 1995 Isuzu FSR650 with a Garpac compactor body and comb lifter. From what I was told there were two of these in the past, one used for tight access garbage and vegetation, while the second did units bottles and paper recycling... sounds about right as well. In the subsequent contract when the company got the Iveco Eurocargos, little 308 here became the appropriate spare difficult access truck. It was a dual control vehicle as well so I can only imagine it had the fully automated arm functions including slide reach. Online it says the rego expired in 2015, and I am led to believe this truck is still out there somewhere sitting around.

The Lajta/SMS Leitha en route from Szentendre to Százhalombatta

Budapest, Hungary

26.04.2018

The Lajta monitor museum ship (ex SMS Leitha - SMS: Seiner Majestät Shiff, the german equivalent of HMS) is the last surviving warship of the imperial-royal Austro-Hungarian Navy. She was built in the 1870's as a river monitor, specially designed for the river Danube. Leitha and her sister ship, SMS Maros served until 1918. They fought during the occupation of Bosnia (1878) and in the Great War. After the war Leitha served in the Red Army of the Hungarian Soviet Republic and was renamed Lajta (the Hungarian name of the river Leitha). According to the peace agreement of Trianon (1920) the new Kingdom of Hungary was not allowed to have warships, so the Lajta was sold and was rebuilt into an excavator ship. She worked on the Danube until the 1970's. A few enthusiasts found her in a very bad shape at the end of the 80's and rebuilt her to reflect Leitha's shape in the 1880's.

A Leitha rövid ideig a Tanácsköztársaság fegyveres erejében is harcolt, amikor is átkeresztelték Lajtára. A Trianoni Békeszerződés megtiltotta, hogy a Magyar Királyság monitorokat tartson hadrendben, így kavicskotró hajóvá alakították és eladták civil vállalkozóknak. Évtizedekig dolgozott a Dunán, míg végül lelkes civilek a '80-as évek végén az újpesti kikötőben megtalálták a rozsdásodó hajótestet. 2010-re sikerült felújítani, és 2014-ben került méltó helyére; a Parlament előtti Dunapartra. A Lajta az 1. Honvéd Tűzszerész és Hadihajós Ezred Hadihajós osztályának tiszteletbeli zászlóshajója.

Looking more like a museum than the successful short line operation they are, SMS Lines in New Jersey is a treat for railfans because of their retro roster, including several Baldwin diesels built only five miles away on the other side of the Delaware River.

In the shops during this visit was SLRS 554, a 1952 vintage AS616 - the most popular model road switcher the company ever built. On the roster for decades now, it was built new for the Trona Railway and later worked for Kaiser Steel before ending up at SMS. I shot this frame during a visit by members of the Conrail Historical Society. Even though it was a Saturday, staff were working to keep the vintage roster in revenue service.

Nowhere to put a roundel on this one's offside!
