That is to say, very average kids seated in a Smart Car...

As some of you know, I also do work for the Japanese government and after networking with other ministries, I was specifically forbidden to sell this technology to any military body.

I do however believe strongly that humans have the right to defend themselves so I have programmed Smart Doll Plus to also be able to deal with burglars but deal with them in such a manner that they do not come to harm - I felt it was important to obey the 3 laws of robotics which are:-

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

In order to protect these laws, I have given Smart Doll tools that would only tickle a burglar such as pepper spray, 1000 volt stun guns and portable flame thrower.

The smart pen is a space-age ballpoint pen embedded with a tiny camera that records the writer's every stroke and scribble. Using Bluetooth connectivity, researchers can instantly upload notes (or doodles) to a blank document page on a computer. If a lab is using multiple notebooks for the same experiment (or conducting multiple experiments), the smart pen can recognize which notebook is being used and upload the digital page to the correct digital notebook. Each page and notebook can be tagged with keywords for quick organization and later accessed by the whole team.

I wonder why this Smart variant hasn't taken off in the UK...

More than once, some of you have noted how funny it is to see Ben keeping a good grip on things. Here's another few photos of the same. ;)

Toy makers are notorious for stretching the credibility of some of their models by offering them in guises not suited to their initial purpose. Quite often that role is themed around Emergency services and so at first glance there is something laughable about making a Police version of the tiny Smart ForTwo. Well believe it or not various Police forces around the World do indeed use these proportionally challenged cars including of course Germany.

Siku have brought out a Polizei edition for its cheeky little casting and looking at pics on the internet I would say it looks very authentic, livery and the casting itself. Despite its diminutive proportions this keeps the Siku tradition of robust quality and nice detailing. Bought today from TK Maxx of all places who had a small selection of Siku singles. Mint and boxed.

Smart Support Socket

Smart Dolls are designed to stand on their own two feet but there are situations where you may need extra stability - like when you are taking them out n about or displaying them at an event near humans who could bump into them.

I designed Smart Doll with a "Smart Support Socket" located at the back of the waist which allows the attachment of either the Telescopic Stand (included with Smart Doll) or Air Stand (sold separately) for dynamic mid air poses.

Week 36

According to Wikipedia, generations, or social generations, "are cohorts of people who were born in the same date range and share similar cultural experiences." In the Western World, probably the oldest known social generation with a name was the Lost Generation describing those who were born between 1883 and 1900 who lived through World War I. The most famous generation of our time is probably the Baby Boomers Generation, which spans 1946 up to 1964 describing those who were born during the baby boom years after World War II. After the Baby Boomers, generation names become a little lame as they go by X, Y, and Z as in Generation X, Generation Y, and Generation Z (lol... I feel really bad for those who would be born after Generation Z because there are no more letters of the alphabets left).

Generation Z is the current generation and is the generation that Evelyn is born into. Like I said, I think this name is lame and I don't like it. I think a better name for Evelyn's generation and those who are being born around this time should be called the "Smart Generation;" the word "smart" here stands for smart devices like in smart phones, smart tablets, etc... Evelyn is going to grow up not knowing what a rotary phone is; she's not going to know what a land line is; and she's not going to know why a "ringtone" is so named when most phones don't even ring. The only reason that she's going to know that a computer has a keyboard and a monitor is because she's going to see her daddy's old dinosaur. ;)

Evelyn's been exposed to smart devices at such a young age that they are going to be second nature to her. These devices would probably impact Evelyn's generation more than any other generations before her. At only 8 months old, Evelyn already knows to swipe her fingers at an iPad to move the images, and she's already posted her first Facebook message using her mommy's iPhone. Evelyn's generation should be called the Smart (Devices) Generation.

On this day I made one interesting observation. We have a lot of choppers coming and going along the coast; they normally keep a comfortable distance from the cliff. On this day, a chopper flew pretty close to the cliff; SleepyEye went off this perch, climbed up to a good height before the chopper turned the corner into the cove. Then I saw a flock of cormorants got flushed out towards the ocean. I think SleepyEye was expecting small birds to be flushed out. Unfortunately for him, no small bird this time. This shot was taken when he came back to the perch empty-handed.

About Danny Choo

Born and raised in the UK, Danny discovered Japanese culture in the early 90's through gaming machines such as the Sega Megadrive and anime such as Super Dimension Fortress Macross.

Danny decided that he wanted more of Japan so began to self study Japanese and started off his working career in a Japanese restaurant called Benihana. There he met his wife and started to go to London University to polish up his Japanese speaking skills which got him a job offer at Japan Airlines in London.

The job at Japan Airlines was Danny's entry into the world of technology which eventually landed him a job in Japan where he stayed in IT for a few years working for the likes of Amazon as Website Manager and Microsoft as a Product Manager.

Danny decided that he wanted to spread Japanese culture around the world full time so cut off his steady paycheque and quit corporate life to start up Mirai Inc in 2007. It took him 9 years to come up with a sustainable business which involved him nearly having to file for bankruptcy.

In order to help Danny on his journey to spread Japanese culture, he created a character called Mirai Suenaga who went on to be an official mascot for Japanese Tourism.

Danny wanted his creation to be more than just a 2 dimensional illustration so decided to create a fashion doll modelled after her and thus Smart Doll was born.

Danny's work to share Japanese culture has been recognised by the Japanese government who has appointed him as a member of various committees that are involved in a national movement known as "Cool Japan."

I was playing around with my Kikipops and found out that Smart Dolls are strong enough to hold them... with one arm! Ok later I'm going to have to experiment with how many she can hold, haha.

SMART stands for Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit, and is currently in the final construction phase. These are two of the DMU cars at the Santa Rosa maintenance base. The cars are in an acceptance mode with high speed testing underway over parts of the line. The route is north of San Francisco over the former Northwestern Pacific Railroad, once a major freight hauler and subsidiary of Southern Pacific.
