47 Palm Beach (Qld) SLSC training Indonesians in surf reel and belt, Kuta Beach, Bali, Indonesia. September 1977
Ken (Knuckle) Ryan and (Wolfman) Warner had a particularly good morning squad. Wolfie has an arm around I Made Suparka. Made later came to Australia wit I Putu Suwardi. These men earned their Examiners qualifications while staying at the Palm Beach (Qld) SLSC over 6 months. Made and Putu were fine fellows and remain good friends of the Palm Beach (Qld) SLSC. Made is the current president of Badung SLSC and has filled I Gde Barata's rather impressive shoes with equal competence. Everything Made does has the genius of competence, thoroughness and thoughtfulness. He is a fine example to the world's lifesaving fraternity, being the quintessential surf lifesaver.
The trainee instructor was Rahman, with his foot on the reel. Understanding Wolfie's gruffness to be more show than performance he enjoyed baiting the big fellow. At the end of a rescue and resuscitation drill it was necessary for the trainees to rotate through the various roles. This was achieved through the 'change flank' movement, where the man on the left (patient) would mark to the right and assume the role of linesman. Rahman would allow the R&R drill to end and then with fiendish gleam in eye turn to Wolfie. "We change flank now?" Wolfie, apoplectic at being asked the same question every ten minutes over the course of several weeks would fulminate mightily and then growl, "Yes, Rahman! We change flank!" With a huge grin, having landed his black marlin one more time, Rahman would turn to the squad and snap "Squad! Change flank!" It was a routine that the Marx Brothers or the Three Stooges might have considered using.

'The first steps in the history of the Noosa Heads SLSC occurred on April 1, 1928 when Alexandra Headlands Club visited Tewantin and "the Heads" to give a display for local men. And so began the "Cooroy Royal Life and Surf Club". A public meeting was held on 9th April 1928 at Cooroy and on April 30 the name was changed to Noosa Heads Royal Life and Surf Club. In December 1928 thirteen members gained their Royal Life Saving Society Still Water and Surf Bronze, thus qualifying to patrol the beach.
In 1929 a club House was placed on the beach and in May 1931 the name was changed to Noosa Life Saving and Surf Club. Since then the club has continued to patrol the beach with the proud record of no lives lost on Noosa Beach while lifesavers were on patrol.
In the 2008/2009 season the club underwent a major refurbishment. We are now very proud to have a clubhouse rated as one of the finest on the Sunshine Coast with "the best seat on the beach". '
