The Candi, a series of platforms with the vaguely Meso-American pyramid or Mesopotamian Ziggurat appearance, was explained to me as the place that the deity would sit during ceremonies associated with his feast days. No particular care was taken to maintain the structure, which was regarded as an object of significance but not holiness. Living on the Ring of Fire makes every structure impermanent. At any time volcano or earthquake can destroy any human structures. Investing too much spiritual significance into an object that will no doubt be destroyed is therefore not particularly wise. The gods may be immortal but their temples are not.

We were snapshot happy tourists on weekends. Novel sights were everywhere. We had early model SLR cameras and Trevor (T Bone) Bone had a Super 8 movie camera. T Bone can been seen filming at the far right. Our tour guide did his best to organize us into an orderly party, but soon realized that he was trying to impose order on chaos. At this point he simply laughed and let us mill about as we indulged our curiosity. Made, one of the Waja SLSC members, had come with us and was better able to explain the significance of what we were seeing.
