45 Palm Beach (Qld) SLSC training Indonesians in surf reel and belt, Kuta Beach, Bali, Indonesia. September 1977
I Gde Barata and Gil Graham observe Barry Magnus's squad as they reset the line and belt. The tall, slim young man on the left of the reel was a perpetual favourite with all, being an affable and generous soul. What he lacked in muscle he made up for in gracefulness. His performances on the dance floor made him a favourite with all the European and Australian girls, with whom he would dance the night away. If any had interest in him though their interest was misplaced as he preferred the company of gentlemen.

42 Palm Beach (Qld) SLSC training Indonesians in use of torpedo buoy, Kuta Beach, Bali, Indonesia. September 1977
Lloyd (Log) Kenny gives instructions in the use of the torpedo buoy whilst a Waja SLSC member translates. Whilst mastery or reel and belt was deemed essential at the time, it was recognized that a minority of rescues were performed with the traditional reel and belt. Times had changed and times continue to change. Rescue boards and torpedo buoys were the principal tools of rescue during the 1970s. Inflatable rescue boats and helicopters would soon revolutionize surf lifesaving. The reel will always be our symbol but as a tool it is now obsolete.
Ken (Knuckle) Ryan and Trevor (TBone) Bone are fascinated by a mock rescue taking place nearby. In the far background John (Spider) McPherson (red Rugby jersey) and Nym Nananjaya are going through the Blue Book in order to clarify the drills associated with the torpedo Buoy. Nanan was the ever smiling Trainee instructor of the morning squad. He was a surfer of considerable skill and had the red hair that Indonesian surfers develop after some time in the sun and salt water. Nanan was a delight to work with. He was intelligent, committed and unfailingly good natured.

On top of the complex gradient detail on the walks, Claire also had to embed other angles like the SLSC cafeteria window. Of course she also populated it with some minifig fun!
