It's hard to describe the Cicada situation. There are so many you can't walk outside without them flying into you, covering everything and making deafening noise. They are amazing!

This Brown Anole has found a high perch from which to survey his territory.

Art is long. Life is short.

I am going to go a little way out to come back to the point of the thought that goes with the image.

I shot this image in a place you can no longer go, The Rahkine region of Myanmar. I was on assignment for American Photo magazine, We were in a boat on the Irrawaddy river during Monsoon season we were hit with a burst of rain so strong that we frantically had to get to shore so we would not sink, we ran to first hut we could find where a family was huddled in the same situation we were.

The composer Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away on the day I “re-found” this image in one of the, come to find out, Numerous “2_DO” folders I have created over the years that I have forgotten about creating. I happened to be listening to Ryuicihi Sakamoto’s album Coda, a piano treatment of the soundtrack he composed for the movie Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.

Track 13, Last Regrets, and perhaps my favorite track on the album, had just started as news of Mr. Sakamoto’s passing came up as an alert. The first record I ever owned was Meet the Beatles. The cover just blew m away at the tender age of 6. I drove my parents crazy about only wanting to wear turtle necks and I particularly drove my father nuts by always wanting to have him play the album. Repeatedly. But I digress….

I’ve been fascinated with the light play of the portraits of the Beatles in the cover art. I believe the music I listen to influences the quality of the images I post process. I believe that we should acquire knowledge not as absolutes but as grains of thought that find each other through the course of human events that coalesce in to a beach of creativity.

Art is long. Life is short was Ryuichi Sakamoto’s favorite quote. Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous.

We always find ourselves in situations that look really great but do we see the potential harm it may do us? I always see the harm before the beauty, it's neither here nor there it just is. No matter how sharp the situation may look I always try to see the green newness and potential for growth.

On the way back to Octon, we see the ruins of the castle Lauzières (south face) at the top of the hill.

See below the situation in relation to the path where we walk.

"These imposing ruins remind us that the feudal power was in these places held by the powerful family of Lauzières, who settled his domination on the plain of Salagou Lauzières comes from the word Yeuses meaning" land planted with holm oaks ". She gave her name and her arms to one of the oldest houses in Languedoc. "

USS Turner BDR-834 (Radar Picket Battle Destroyer, a very rare ship indeed!) is seen while underway at sea, prior to its 1960 FRAM II refit, ca late 1950's. This concocted photo was created because back in the day you always wanted to impress your friends with a bigger than life photo of your ship, "because my dog is bigger than your dog." When this baby cleared it throat, everybody listened! Then on top of that, the actual USS Turner was a true Radar Picket Destroyer (DDR-834), originally of the Gearing Class when constructed. The idea for the rare designation of "Radar Picket Battle Destroyer," was that it was always a constant battle to keep everything in working order aboard the ship, which of course we did do, but it was a constant battle to do so. This must have been a true situation, because after my 4-1/2 year enlistment ended in January 1967, the ship was decommissioned just two years later in 1969, making it one of the first Gearing class destroyers to be in line to be scrapped.

The name of the photographer that captured the original image on film is unknown, but the phony modifications performed to the image were performed by me. The funny thing about a photo such as this is that the overall public when viewing it, really don't know what they are looking at when it comes to US Navy vessels! This photo has been shown to various friends and they did not pick up on it or think that it was phony. The ship now has the long sleek hull appearance of a destroyer, but what about those large and long naval guns! LOL The photo that was used to create this image was that of the USS Iowa BB-61. Do hope that some out there enjoy viewing this photo and that it does not upset some others!

How often do we want to get an "image" of the situation before we allow ourselves a judgement?

A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT. ATTENTION MALES OF ANY AND ALL AGES

From the earliest days of mankind boys and indeed men of all ages have been perplexed in social situations where they are presented to young members of the opposite gender and are met with giggling*. The first reaction for men is to wonder “What about my appearance or bearing causes these young ladies to laugh? Are my clothes so out of fashion? Has my cowlick sprung loose and stands like a radio antenna? Is some article of my clothing untucked, mismatched, mis-buttoned or worse unzipped?” Female giggling has deflated many a teenage boy’s self image, made him feel inadequate and has exacerbated his sense of social and physical awkwardness. This among the riot of hormones permeating the bodies of both genders.

But now the truth can be told. Be at ease, young man. Girls and young women giggle not because they find anything ungainly about a given young man, but because they feel silly and awkward in the situation. And since most young women tend to move in pairs or small groups when one starts giggling the reaction is contagious.

How might young men then counter this giggling? Saying, “You must share the joke which causes you so much amusement,” will only trigger more cascades of giggling. A better response might be to join in their mirth by saying, “This all really does seem ridiculous, doesn’t it?” Or if you wish to misdirect their minds into a different frame pose a question that requires math since it stimulates a different part of the brain. You might ask, “How long did it take for you to get here?” Or my favorite, “How many shopping days until Christmas?”

*I should point out that young men also giggle uncontrollably but under different circumstances.
