Typical red cabin situated along the shores of a stunningly beautiful fjord in the Lofoten, Norway. In such a setting and these circumstances, who would't want to live there....?

At this point, Bob was beginning to have second thoughts. Maybe being an adventurer wasn't his calling in life after all.

Hey guys! Yes, I am still around, I just haven't had much time/inspiration to build lately. But here's something new! I'm really happy with the way this turned out. EDIT: Shoot, I was going to add a frog, but I forgot. Oh well.

Tell me what you think! Comments and faves are greatly appreciated!

I had two things going for me. The full moon allowed me to get enough ambient light on the water, the rocks and the sculpture, "Spirit of the Sea". In these situations I don't even bother with autofocus (just zone focus and concentrate on framing and exposure time). The ship has slowed a little, but is still moving surprisingly fast into the channel. The second thing was that the ship would be relatively close to shore.

It was the perfect opportunity to capture the movement of the ship in the relatively short LE. I would have needed to put the ISO up to very high levels if I wished to freeze it entirely. But I was more interested in the light, especially that reflected moonlight on the water, and a shorter shutter speed would have made the sculpture and rocks less naturally visible.

The sculpture can be seen on the far left hand side. And it has quite a controversial story. From a distance it almost looks like an aboriginal warrior threatening the incoming ships with a spear. In fact it represents Neptune with his trident. It was designed by Aden and Karena McLeod and unveiled in 2009. But not before plenty of protests by locals over the nudity (yes this is Devonport) and the fact it was deemed culturally inappropriate. The bitterness was such the sculptors left the state and did not attend the opening. publicartaroundtheworld.com/public-art-in-australia/publi...

Beijing to force out foreign students

OLYMPIC LEAVE: After incurring the ire of the business community with tighter visa rules, Beijing now plans to have all foreign students gone for July and August

DPA, BEIJING, WITH STAFF WRITER

Friday, Apr 18, 2008, Page 1

China plans to order most foreign students to leave Beijing before the Olympic Games in August, strictly regulate the issuing of business and tourist visas, and deport refugees, sources said yesterday.

“Even if you have to continue your studies in September, you need to leave Beijing in July and August,” a spokeswoman for Beijing University said.

The university is one of China’s most prestigious colleges and enrolls hundreds of foreign students annually on Chinese-language and other courses.

The spokeswoman from Beijing University’s international cooperation department said the two-month gap applies to all universities in Beijing and was ordered by “higher authorities” because of the Olympics.

She said all short-term summer courses for foreigners had been canceled this year.

One Western education official estimated that at least 10,000 students could be affected by the order if it applied to the whole country, though some universities outside Beijing said they were unaware of the rule.

The head of the German academic exchange, the DAAD, said a ban on foreign students during the Olympics was not mentioned in recent meetings with officials.

An administrator of dormitories for foreigners at Tongji University in Shanghai said her department had received no notice banning students during the Olympics.

But a woman who assists foreign students in China said at least two universities outside Beijing, Anhui Normal University and Heilongjiang University, had stopped recruiting foreign students for courses running beyond July.

She said she believed any students with visas until the end of this year would be allowed to stay in Beijing, but she added that most student visas would expire in June before the universities’ normal summer vacation.

A foreign ministry official said he was unaware of any ban on students but the normal education of foreign students “will be guaranteed.”

The official China Daily said about 190,000 foreign students from 188 nations attended courses in China last year.

Asked for comment last night, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council Vice Chairman Liu Teh-hsun (劉德勳) said he was unaware of the developments, but that the council would monitor the situation.

China has already severely restricted the issuing of short-term and multi-entry business visas, prompting complaints from business groups and diplomats.

Some Beijing-based businesses said they may be unable to fill vacancies until after the Olympics because of the new restrictions.

“You can be sure that all countries affected will raise the issue with the Chinese side very intensively,” one informed source said of the restrictions on business visas.

“It clearly has to do with the Olympics,” the source said.

China appears to have acted partly in response to recent reports that police uncovered at least two terrorist plots targeting the Olympics, the source said, adding that other nations had taken similar security measures in the past.

China’s Foreign Ministry yesterday defended the move and said visas were issued “according to law.”

“I believe it will have no influence on normal business activities in China,” ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu (姜瑜) said.

But Joerg Wuttke, president of the EU Chamber of Commerce in China, yesterday criticized China for limiting business visas issued in Hong Kong.

Wuttke called the restrictions “truly annoying” and charged that the new visa rules were unclear and had never been published.

The new measures, which an informed source said were temporary, require non-permanent Hong Kong residents to apply for visas in their home countries.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) also said it was concerned about the deportation of vulnerable refugees from China before the Olympics.

In a statement posted on its Web site, UNHCR highlighted the case of a 17-year-old unaccompanied refugee who was returned to his country of origin after being taken from his home in Beijing on April 3.

UNHCR spokeswoman Jennifer Pagonis said that some of the deportations among the 180 refugees recorded by UNHCR in China “may well constitute a violation” of the 1951 Refugee Convention.

This is blurred so much because I screwed up and moved the camera during the 1/30 second the lens was open. The reason I used a 1/30 sec is that I wanted to record some ambient light, and not have a black background. The flash at 1/4 power only had a duration of about 1/4000 second. What I should have done is use an iso of 400 and a shutter speed of 1/125. Oh well. However, it does add a certain sense of motion to the image so I don't hate it. These birds move so fast.

Lighting stuff: Lit with three Yongnuo strobes on stands positioned on either side and in front of the feeder. The strobes, all set to 1/4 power were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. I used a camera setting that recorded some ambient light, because I didn't want a black background.

I've taken quite a few pictures of hummers over the years and put them an album creatively called Hummingbirds.

Spectacular Sky & Sea Splitting Sunset Seaside Scene - IMRAN™

It is incredible how quickly time and life fly. I have not posted anything from my laptop since late August. That is when I finally made it back to New York for the first time after nearly 18-months of staying in Florida during the pandemic.

It was great to be back in my forever-American-hometown, Manhattan, New York City for an annual reunion with my childhood friends. We had skipped last year's meetup because of the much worse and uncertain pandemic situation then. Now we were all fully vaccinated, and still fully masked when near others or for appropriate situations.

I also made it to my blessed Long Island home for the first time m that period too. I am so blessed both my Florida and my New York homes survived Hurricane Herni and Hurricane Irma in quick succession respectively.

I honestly did not get a chance to do 10% of what I thought I would get done during my New York homestay. But the beautiful beloved girl who took up my time during those days now owes me a week-long visit to ensure I catch up on my tasks there. LOL. But, no, I am not complaining.

Back home in Apollo Beach this week, I only managed to take out my drone for a quick sunset flight tonight. Summer is still here, but it is right after the Labor Day weekend. This is an HDR (high dynamic range) photo from two regular photos. They were taken with the 5-years old DJI Phantom 4 drone.

I found it interesting how the sharply cut-off low clouds over the Saint Petersberg horizon make the right one-third of the sea (or Tampa Bay water in this case) appear such a different color than the left. Enjoy this moment of gratitude with me at Maghreb prayers time.

As soon as Mario and I managed to find each other in the crowded center of Milan, we walked around looking for a good spot: I think Mario did see the beautiful Lera and Anastasia and I did go and approach them: at first they both were ok with posing, but a bit surprised and uncomfortable, but a few shots later they both enjoyed the experience and helped us with strong expressions. If I recall correctly, Mario suggested to take advantage of the cigarette and use it for the frame and, at some point I think Mario also helped with the reflector.

It took me a while to get proper control of the situation: thankfully Lera is an experienced model and was really great and helpful!

I got quite a few good shots, but I think the gaze in this one is pretty strong.

I had the chance to have a talk both with Lera and Anastasia and we spoke about their experience in Italy and about the beautiful Russia: Anastasia suggested I should go and see Moscow.

This definitely was a good start for a great day with Mario!

Thank you so much Lera: it was really fun taking pictures of you and wish you all the best!!!

Hey all, this isn't TKK. It's a friend of his helping out. As you can see there was a work accident. He wanted me to let everyone that has a plaque coming to please be patient. He is out of commission for a while but says that the next update you get will be from him and not me. Please leave some well wishes while he is getting better.
