Back in the late 1980s and mid 1990s, this kind of bus dominated the Metro Manila roads, specifically its main thoroughfare, the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue. The MetroBus, founded in 1989, was a consortium of several bus companies operating on several routes plying primarily in EDSA. It was an initiative of the then-Department of Transportation and Communication (now Department of Transportation), together with Metro Manila Transit Corporation known for its Love Bus during the tenure of Ferdinand Marcos, PCI Bank (later Equitable PCI Bank, now BDO) and Columbian Motors Corporation, the distributor of UD Nissan Diesel buses from 1987 to 2015.

 

Some of the bus companies that carry the MetroBus brand are Mafel Trans, Inland Trailways, Aladdin Transport, Mayamy Trans, Philippine Rapid Transit, Santrans, Dela Rosa Transit, Columbus, Napat Transit (now Dimple Star Transport) and Citytrans, among others. Tritran and Five Star which primarily operates on provincial routes also used to operate under MetroBus brand for its city bus operations.

 

The non–airconditioned Santarosa Metrostar, equipped with UD Nissan Diesel Condor CPB87 truck chassis powered by UD Nissan Diesel FE6B engine was one of the most common units of MetroBus. Other units used are Santarosa/Columbian Manufactuing Corporation's SDX, an unknown model of Cosco bus imported from China - prior to exi, and more.

 

Over 730 SR Metrostar units (as of 1990) were built for MetroBus, and acquired by operators thru Bus Installment Purchase Program (BIPP).

 

Today, MetroBus no longer exists as they operate on their own names. Some SR Metrostar are rebodied for extended life and later decommissioned due to the 15-year age limit for PUBs set by Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board or LTFRB. For the 2016 edition of Philippine International Motor Show CAMPI in which Columbian Manufacturing Corporation - the distributor of Daewoo Buses is a member, they give honor to the one of the most famous city bus back then, in line of introduction of the new standard city bus, the Daewoo Santarosa BS120SN. The British connection with RTC Transit is reinforced with a fleet of 50 Wright StreetCar RTVs that operate the Las Vegas SDX (Strip-Downtown Express) service. The design is derived from the articulated bus developed by Wrightbus and Volvo for use by FirstGroup in York and Swansea. FirstGroup marketed the design as the FTR.

Santa Fe X7428W, the SDX, is at the Santa Fe station called Valencia on the San Diego Subdivision near the city of Irvine, CA on February 10, 1990. The SDX is the Santa Fe daily except for Sunday freight to San Diego, CA.

Deregulation brought about fairly low key competition between Ipswich Buses and the other main operator in the area, Eastern Counties. The latter tendered successfully for Evening & Sunday services within the town previously operated by Ipswich Buses (principally Routes 2 & 4) but Ipswich successfully tendered for subsidised services to the east of the town previously operated by Eastern Counties. This picture, taken on Sunday 26th. October 1986, shows the first Ipswich Buses service on Route 80 operated by Dennis Falcon No. 106. Within a fairly short period most of these services reverted to their original operators.

Atlantean 20 displays the livery applied to the 35 vehicles of similar design delivered between 1975 and 1977 - and why the livery soon fell out of favour! Bus 20 is barely three years old but already looks very care-worn and grubby, compared with the seventeen year old Regent V in more traditional colours alongside. Bus 20 and her sisters were repainted in a new style of predominantly green livery over the next few years. The AEC Reliance parked behind the Regent V carries the single deck variant of the old Ipswich Corporation livery.

Personally, I'd favour any of these liveries over the bizarre colour schemes currently being applied to our local buses!!
