An extra east Wisconsin Central train, led by former Milwaukee Road EMD SDL39 No. 585, is climbing Byron Hill between Fond du Lac and Hamilton, Wisconsin, on the morning of February 2, 1992. The 2,300 hp SDL39 rides on export trucks with uneven axle spacing and is only 55 feet-2 inches long, making it even shorter than a GP7!

The Milwaukee Road's final SDL39 locomotive, poses outside of EMD's facility in La Grange Illinois on an overcast November day. The unit, along with MILW 586-589 will be delivered to the Milwaukee and pressed into service in the Dakotas. The 590 went to the Soo Line in 1985 along with 582-589 after the takeover of The Milwaukee Road, and eventually found it's way to the Wisconsin Central as their WC 590. These little locomotives were tough and good at what they were designed to do. Today, the 590 is alive and well in Chile and is now owned by the Fepasa railroad as their 2344.

I've posted a lot of SDL's working on WC. So many in fact that I'd sometimes lose track that the little brutes spent there early years on the MILW. This weeks SNS is at Daytons Bluff with 586 leading 3 sisters and a couple geeps on train 602. Most likely this was shot by Ed Kanak on March 17, 1985 although no photographer is listed. Even though the SDL39's called the Yoopee pretty much home for most all of the WC's existance getting a trio wasn't all that common. LO-34 works west out of Trout Lake on April 24, 1991 with 587, 583 and 584 leading 6000 tons.

During most of the WC's time in the Upper Peninsula you could find SDL's working somewhere. The gritty little units early on found a home on the transfers between the Twin Sault's and also working out of Marquette. Here's a set of three working Gladstone-Soo Yard train 35 on April 25, 1991. 584, 585 and 587 have 40 cars headed east while 583 and another unit assigned to the Marquette line stand by to the left in the distance.

Being they worked the Upper Peninsula for most of the WC's existence finding the SDL's and wood wasn't all that uncommon. This is late evening train 34 with 590 leading 60 cars at Soo Yard on June 23, 1995. That is conductor Ronnie Taylor making the joint which means engineer Kenny Sebastian is in the cab and will have the task of getting 590 to lug this heavy train as far as Trout Lake. WC is power short and thankfully when this job meets train 35 at Trout Lake there will be an SD45 handed off to these guys before they leave for Gladstone. The log racks on the head pin are off CP and are going to the L-P plant in Newberry.

I really liked the look of 584 with its smaller Wisconsin Central on the side. It just seemed to fit the proportions of the SDL better than the big lettering. Getting a trio of units in full WC paint was none to easy when I shot this set tied up on the SW wye at Trout Lake waiting for train 35 to finish its yard work. Once 35 is done the crew for the Marquette local with get to work with 584, 587 and 590. March 24, 1990.

Special Ops U-28A landing at SDL.

On the relatively flat district north of Hawk Junction DB's were not as important as between Hawk and Sault Ste. Marie, but still catching a pair of SDL's working train 6 down from Hearst was far from a common occurrence. On May 21, 1998 that was the power though, as 586 and 588 arrive at Hawk Junction yard with 49 cars.

Early WC action often found SDL39's working trains 34 & 35 between Soo Yard and Gladstone often in pairs or trios. Later on they still frequented the area but often were assigned to the Marquette/Munising line and the pit at Inland once WC became involved with that operation. 582 and 588 lug train 35 up the hill at Ensign on February 20, 1989.

Landing at SDL- Wings of Freedom Tour.

WC LO-40 arrives at Trout Lake on December 10, 1994 with 589, 4508 and 586 leading 37 cars. Normal numbers for the trains between Marquette and Trout Lake were LO-42/LO-43 but business had picked up to such an extent of the ex DSS&A that WC would often run an extra Newberry-Trout Lake turn and designate it LO-40. The 4508 was one of only a couple ex FRV geeps to get a big red WC emblem on it and I went to rather great lengths to catch it in the lead but most often it was a trail fail as in this case. Most of the 4300/4500 ex FRV/CNW geeps had been rode pretty hard and normally crews up here would not lead with them if possible.
