Mercedes-Benz had barely taken the wraps off its new S-Class before it also announced the high-performance AMG version of the flagship sedan. This model series was the first to officially receive the name S-Class, meaning Sonderklasse or 'Super Class'. It was produced from September 1972 to September 1980. The S-Class has traditionally been the platform on which new technical innovations are introduced. For the W116, the most important were : ABS (optional) from 1978, the first diesel engine and the first turbo diesel in a high-end model (300 SD), a double-wishbone front suspension and reinforced safety cell and improved crumple zones. This very original 350 SE has only 70.000 km and was purchased new by the current owner's grandfather.
