The Victorian Railways S class were built by Clyde Engineering based on the EMD F7 class and introduced from 1957. These 1800hp single ended Co-Co machines were quite successful, and only a third of the 18 strong class have been scrapped, four remain in service and the remainder preserved.
In the early 1990s privatisation arrived and West Coast Railway took over the Melbourne to Warrnambool route using a fleet of B and S class locos as well as regular steam operation of service trains at weekends. WCR ran into difficulties and closed down in the early 2000s, their four S class locos passing to local freight operators.
Here S302 runs into Geelong station with a Warrnambool to Melbourne service in 2002.
This loco is still in service today, with Southern Shorthaul Railroad.
