Enjoying the sun, the brise and the views, sailing from Hvar to Vis.

As many of you may know, I live in one of the sailing capitals of the world. I love the way sailboats look, but I would rather stay on land instead of controlling them.

Various pictures of our Jan 1976 sailing vacation with Pam and Brendan Kelley, starting off from Tortola in the British Virgin Islands... This is one of several photos taken during the second of our two Christmas/NewYear's sailing trips (in Jan 1976) with Pam and Brendan Kelley. On each of the trips, we flew from NYC to Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands, and picked up a "bareback" boat that had been provisioned with a week's worth of food and refreshments.

We then proceeded to sail around the local area, basically within sight of one of the islands at all times, and never venturing out into the open sea where we might be subjected to much rougher waves and weather. But this was typically the season of the "Christmas winds," so we had good steady breezes with which to sail wherever we wanted.

Actually, "we" is a bit of a misnomer: Brendan was clearly the captain of the boat, and Pam was his first mate: they were "serious" racing sailors at home, and they knew far more than Toni and I would ever hope to (or want to) learn about sailing. So we happily volunteered for the "crew" duties that consisted largely of winching and scuttling from one side of the boat to the other when the winds shifted, or we came about in a tack.

We typically stopped somewhere calm and protected in the late afternoon, and often jumped overboard to swim and splash around before deciding what to do for dinner.
