The Sage (x 2) on the banks of the River Tyne in Newcastle

A few more weeks before the Hummingbirds arrive, so I’m sheltering and encouraging growth of my Friendship Sage – (Salvia 'Amistad) plants. As I’ve grown them in pots I’ve been able to move them into my garage during our few winter freezes, and so far, they have remained in bloom. The plant has masses of beautiful spikes of violet flowers on near black stems. The flowers are slightly “furry” on the outer surface. Hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies love this plant.

The Sage Thrasher is a sagebrush dependent species during the breeding season and winters in rather dry, brushy and grassy areas in the Southwestern U.S. and Mexico. Its rather rambling song is beautiful. Unfortunately this species has experienced approximately a 50% population decline as sagebrush habitat has been degraded or entirely converted to other usages. It's reported that it's been largely extirpated from Canada and its range is constricting in the U.S. It continues to enjoy a strong population in the Intermountain West where large tracts of sagebrush remain.

Sage Thrasher:

Oreoscoptes montanus

Sage Thrasher singing on Bennett Mountain Road near Mountain Home.

"This smallest of the thrashers is a widespread denizen of the West’s vast sagebrush steppe. Sage Thrashers are furtive creatures that hunt for insects beneath a protective sagebrush canopy. In spring the males sing seemingly endless cascades of song from tall perches."

Sage Gateshead is a music and culture centre in Gateshead on the south bank of the River Tyne in the northeast of England.

An uncommon visitor to southern Ontario, this western based Sage Thrasher stayed deep in the cover and only popped out briefly. It was feeding on the rosehips tangled among the brush and undergrowth. A treat to enjoy this lifer find.

Red cherry sage blooming by the house hedge. Taken on a walk around the sunset time.

Cherry sage is the common name for Salvia microphilla, Salvia greggii, and Salvia х jamensis (a hybrid between S. microphilla and S. greggii).

It's a pretty herb and one that has medicinal purposes. Its essential oil is also used in perfumes and as a flavouring for vermouths, wines and liqueurs. Clary sage also attracts pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies so I'd say this is is an all-around winner.

Thank you for your visits and comments, they're very much appreciated. Have a great weekend!

Ho Withun Thasana or the Sages Lookout is an observatory tower built by king Chulalongkorn in 1881 for viewing the surrounding countryside.

Dave and I spent a very pleasant week of vacation this past April at the home of a good friend who lives in Washington State. This is a shot from my first session of taking reasonably close pics of a Sage Thrasher.

I had to belly up to this excellent songster using the "push from toes to elbows technique" all the while being mindful of unwanted reptiles that could possibly be in the area that I wasn't keen on meeting eye to eye.
