These images were made during a journey down Rustic Road 60 in Vilas County on June 20, 2017.

R-60 winds through the Northern Highland/American Legion State Forest, with canopies of coniferous and hardwood trees. R-60 passes near old logging camp sites and hiking trails, and offers vistas of numerous, clear Northwoods lakes and dense forestland.

Wisconsin's Rustic Roads system was created to preserve many of the state's scenic, lightly traveled country roads. Features of Rustic Roads include rugged terrain, native vegetation and wildlife, or open areas with agricultural vistas.

Based on Rustic Typeface from Phillips' Old Fashioned Type Book.

Typical limestone Mediterranean house facade with bouganvilla

We spotted this incredibly rustic brickwork, much patched and re-pointed and generally bodged about. I just had to see if I could capture it on camera.

The building is a strange little shed beside a rather smart development of apartments alongside the Phoenix Trail in Thame. As the PT is along an old railway line, I assume this is an old railway building of some sort. On closer inspection, it seemed to have an asbestos roof.

This barn caught my attention, with short glimpses between trees, from the road.

Located within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, R-74, a gravel route, passes the former Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Newald which operated from 1933–1942, and crosses the Popple River, a designated Wisconsin “Wild River.”

Rustic Christmas Parker - Twelve Days of Christmas Figurine 6

Adopt Parker from my Etsy store: www.etsy.com/listing/114405762

This recipe is from Smittenkitchen.com (love that blog)! I used fresh, local rhubarb from Ellis Family Farm in Michigan. The compote turned out delicious (who knew rhubarb could break down over heat so amazingly?! This was my first time ever cooking/eating rhubarb).

R-34 leads east of the village of Alvin through a heavily wooded area, including a 50-year-old pine plantation.

Details from some charmingly neglected rooftops in the small town of Muenzenberg (which means "Coin Hill") near Hanau, Germany. There is also a 12th century castle here overlooking the town. Muenzenberg was once an important town from the 16th through 18th centuries and even struck its own coins (muenzen von Muenzenberg :) I have one of them in my own collection. Nowadays, however, it is a small town of 500 people but still retains a lot of charm with small winding streets and beautiful rustic farmhouses from centuries past.

These images were made during a journey down Rustic Road 58 in Oneida County on June 20, 2017.

R-58 skirts scenic Northwoods’ lakes while wandering through thick pine and hardwood forests. This route crosses a railroad bed used in the 1800s as a main line to Minocqua. It has been converted to the Bearskin State Trail for hiking and bicycling. This route intersects with the Tomahawk River and two small creeks, through cedar lowlands and dense pine and hardwood forests.
