At Keys Desert Queen Ranch, Joshua Tree National Park California

I like this image because the shape of the rusted area, and the rusted area's inner texture, was suggestive of one of the types of images that one can generate on a computer by using Fractals. The rusted area looks to me to resemble "Mandelbrot's Dragon"

The gate at former Emperor Haile Selassie's once splendid winter residence • Massawa, Eritrea

Former Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie's Imperial Palace (winter residence) in Massawa (formerly Ethiopia, now Eritrea) was attacked in 1990 by the Soviet-backed DERG government of Mengistu Haile Mariam during the Ethiopian-Eritrean war (after Massawa had been captured by units of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front earlier that year). The palace was heavily damaged during the attack, and since Eritrea's independence to this day the structure has been

basically abandoned.

I guess anything goes at the Rust Revival.

Okay, so here's how I go about rusting stuff. This is neither my best work (the stopping to take photos really threw off my work flow) nor the best choice of subjects. Not sure why I decided rusting a bit of wood was the best idea. But anyway, his should be informative. I usually do a lot more back and forth but I tried to do it step by step this time instead of jumping all over the place so I could document it a bit better.

The are my materials:

two ratty bits of sponge

two old gnarled brushes (one large one small)

a wadded bit of paper towel (or two)

a bowel of baking soda

a bowel of talc

Paints:

black

white

metallic silver

red iron oxide (this is the primary "rust")

antique gold

toffee brown

translucent orange

More of the rusting frame. What you can't see is that along with the surface rust (which happens where they salt the roads) is the penetrating corrosion putting holes in the frame.

A few of the rusted relics at Gammons Gulch

Gammons Gulch is a reconstructed old western town created by Jay Gammons. It is a mix of 1880’s to 1930’s early America. The town has been used in movies, commercials and music videos. The movie set has a large collection of antiques, old cars and movie memorabilia. You can get a guided tour of this little town. Jay will tell you the history of just about every item he has collected over the years while creating the town.

I recently became aware of how beautiful rust can be. I'm emulating someone.
