Me. Age five. Elliot Lake, Ontario. Running away.
Realizing I will need supplies, I pack a suitcase. It contains a single action figure.
Being winter, I dress appropriately in boots, mittens, and a scarf.
I am wearing nothing else.
My mother, who takes this photo, is very supportive.
My father, on the couch in the background, seems less than concerned.
I open the door.
There is a full-on blizzard outside.
I go downstairs and play with my action figure.
Geoffrey Ndungu won the Dublin City Marathon for the second year running in a time of 2 hours 11 minutes and 9 seconds. The time was outside last year's course record time of 2:08.33.
Paul Pollock from Belfast was the first Irish man home in ninth place in 2:16.30, ahead of Sean Hehir who finished in 2:17.50.
Magdalene Mukunzi was the first woman home in a time of 2:30.46 which was outside the course record of 2:26.13. Maria McCambridge was the first Irish woman through the finishing line in 2:35.28.
Luke Jones from Wales won the wheelchair section.
A total of 14,300 people registered for this year's race which was without a major sponsor for the first time in 20 years.
The second running of the Devlin GAA 5KM Road Race and Fun Run was held in Delvin, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Easter Bank Holiday Monday April 1st 2013 at 12:00. The race was held as a fund raiser for Devlin Community Games and Underage GAA development. This 5KM is AAI approved and was open to competitive runners, fun runners, and walkers. The heavy rain from last year's race was replaced with bitterly cold and windy conditions which still did not deter a large crowd of participants from the local community and beyond taking part. The race started on the N52 Delvin Mullingar road and then proceeded to take a right-handed course around some side roads until the race emerges again on the N52 for the finish at the Devlin GAA grounds.
Refreshments were served in the Devlin GAA clubhouse after the race. Overall, the event was again a successful one. The race starts and ends on the N52 road which makes it a particularly challenging organisational task for the race organisers. However, everything was managed well and there was a great race event.
Overall Race Summary
Participants: Approximately 200 people
Weather: Dry, bitterly cold, with strong head wind
Course: Mixture of National Primary Route road and rural backroads with some difficult hills - accurate measurement. Almost an entire traffic free course.
Refreshments: Yes - lots - served afterwards in the GAA club.

Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

This is a photograph from the first running of the Killyon 5KM Fun Run and Walk which was held at Moran's, Hill-of-Down, Killyon, Enfield, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 22nd June 2014 at 11:00. The run was organised to raise funds for the Killyon National School Building Fund. This was a very well organised event. The whole Killyon/Hill-of-Down community were out in force helping with every aspect of the race organisation. Race Headquarters was Moran's Pub ("The Hill").
The race started on a local boreen about 1.5KM from the Finish Area. The run then proceeded on a clockwise direction over the Hill-of-Down to Langan's Cross. Taking a right here the run went to the next Canal bridge at Ballasport. The final 1.5KM were run on the beautiful bank of the Royal Canal which brought participants back up to Moran's and the finish line. Interestingly the race crossed the Canal twice and crossed over and under the Dublin Sligo Railway line. Hill-of-Down was once a station on this railway but closed in the 1960s. No trace of the station remains today.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the race and on it's first running this turned out as a brilliant success. The event will hopefully become an annual event.

One overcast March day back in 1974, when I worked at the Jane Hodge Holiday Home, we took the youngsters on a visit to the sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr, which is a vast area of natural dune and scrubland adjoining the Glamorgan heritage Coast. The kids had a whale of a time running up and down the dunes and riding on the sand sledges, for days afterwards we were still finding sand in their pockets, shoes and wellington boots.
The last in this set and Brian charges down the dune on a sand sledge whilst David waits his turn. OK, I've cheated here and added a sky, but it helps to balance the photo a little without that huge expanse of blankness.
From 1968 to 1974 I worked at the Jane Hodge Holiday Home at Trerhyngyll in the Vale of Glamorgan. The home was dedicated to providing short term "holidays" or respite care for disabled children of all abilities. Some of the youngsters were severely disabled, others not so, indeed sometimes it was hard to tell they had any form of disability at all. During my time at the home I took over 400 colour slide photographs and have about three times that number of black and white negatives as well as some 8mm ciné film. On another day we returned to the dunes where the youngsters played in the little stream which I have already shown you in another set.

After ten miles of running, marathoners and half-marathoners were greeted with this view of the Pacific Ocean and Ocean Beach. It's almost enough to inspire me to run 13.1 miles.
The Father Murphy AC 5 Mile Road Race, Fun Run, and Walk was held in Kildalkey, Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland on Easter Sunday 31st March 2013 at 12 noon.
This is the third successive year when the race has been staged in Kildalkey with races previous to 2011 held in the neighbouring parish village of Ballivor. The routing is a modification on the two previous years. This race combined an open 5 mile race and the annual Meath 5 mile road race championship. Traditionally, this race was held on St. Patrick's Day with the venues moving from Athboy, to Ballivor, to the current location of Kildalkey. This was it's first year having an Easter Sunday fixture.
The very cold weather of late did not deter over 200 runners, joggers, and walkers participating in the event. There were some great post-race refreshments available for competitors in the Kildalkey Community Center afterwards. Well done to everyone involved - from the members of Fr. Murphy AC, to the neighbouring clubs in Co. Meath - all of whom helped to continue to fine tradition that this race has built up over the past number of years. Our set of photographs are mostly from the finish area of the race. Fr. Murphy AC was formed in 1970 from the amalgamation of several smaller local clubs and now offers some very fine facilities to the people of this part of Co. Meath.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I played with it, gave it a motion blur. I think it maybe needs more of one, it doesn't feel like enough to me. Either that, or none at all. Whatever. I like the blue.

From archives. Walking in the forest and you see a baby deer running toward you. Once it reached us, it got confused, and we had to negotiate how to pass each other on a narrow path. In the end, it ended well, as it got reunited with its mom, but we passed each other without an incident :)
This is a photograph from the fourth annual running of the 'Streets of Athboy' 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in the town of Athboy, Co. Meath, Ireland on Friday 11th August 2017 at 20:00. Tonight's event follows on from the very successful previous three runnings of the event. The race event was organised very successfully again by Mick Priest and his team of volunteers and helpers from the local athletics club Father Murphy AC and the local community. The Fr. Murphy club is based in rural meath between the towns of Ballivor and Athboy. A credit to their establishment the club boasts facilities on 17 acres including a grass 400m and 1KM all weather walking track.
The race itself starts on the Navan road approximately 1KM from the Registration Hall. The race follows a route away along the main street of Athboy and then turns left at the Cosy Pub onto the Kildalkey Road. This brings participants through a series of bends before a long straight stretch leading to a country laneway where there is a short loop before return back onto the Kildalkey road. This returns back on the route that the race started on. The race finished in the grounds of Athboy Community Centre. It is a good fair course and many participants felt it offered the opportunity for fast running. Overall the race, as part of the Meath AAI series of races, continued and maintained the high standard of road race organisation in County Meath by Meath running and athletic clubs. The Fr. Murphy Athletic Club also organise a very successful 10KM Road Race and Fun Run which is held during Easter on an annual basis and is also part of the Meath AAI calendar of races. However the 10KM does not actually take place in Athboy but rather the nearby village and townlands of Kildalkey.
The very rainy weather of recent days cleared off and the race was held in good weather conditions for running. However the greatest challenge during the second week of August is the fading evening summer light as the dusk begins to creep in a little earlier each evening.
Refreshments were provided afterwards in St. James' Hall in the town where the race headquarters and registration took place. Athboy is located west of Navan on the N51 between Navan and Delvin. Athboy is also very close to the Westmeath border which is only a few miles away to the west of the town.

The explaination is very simple.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
