A native of the East Indies, this unusual, flightless duck has been exported to many countries to be bred for its eggs and meat. I encountered my first flock in Canada running like penguins (where they get their nickname) across a farmer's pen. This female is one of several released in a public park where they are thriving and breeding. With their comical personalities, and if I weren't into dogs, I'd have a bunch of these as pets.

After taking the photo I expressed my uncertainty to a good friend of mine regarding whether, had I this opportunity again, I would have wanted the subject running towards rather than away from the water. This friend expressed preference towards the latter. I asked, curiously, why? Did it not make sense that the swimmer is running towards the water? She said that as a viewer she was drawn in to contemplating what it could be that the subject is so intensely running towards. She told me this was inspiring to her - that the runner is heading towards something unknown, rather than water, something that can be left to the viewer to imagine.
