New York City - February 26, 2023: Runners in Central Park running a half marathon practice run, New York City.
With less than 20 minutes until sunset, New Mexico Rail Runner train no. 519 literally pulls through the middle of the busy intersection of St. Francis Dr. and Cerrillos Rd. just south of downtown Santa Fe. As with most views around this northern New Mexico city, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains loom in the background.
This train will only run as far south as Albuquerque, before tying up for the day.
A Rail Runner MP36 speeds down the middle of I-25 with 2 Bombardier bi-levels in tow. This line was constructed about 10 years ago for the purpose of reaching Santa Fe from Albuquerque. The original Santa Fe branch to Santa Fe (now the Santa Fe Southern) was too lightly built and too heavily graded to be suitable for a high speed commuter route.

Virginia Rail
Summer Lake Wildlife Area, OR
A Virginia Rail alerts its chick of a potential predator lurking along the bank. Soon after this shot, the rail and its chick raced out of the area squabbling the whole way and I caught a glimpse of why – a mink was lurking along the bank in the shadows.
Rails have physical adaptations to help them move quickly through the blades of nearly impenetrable sedges and reeds along the edges of a marsh, as well running across or diving into water if needed. These adaptations include a laterally compressed body, long toes, flexible vertebrae, and wings that aid in diving under water. As a group, rails have the highest ratio of leg muscles to flight muscles of any bird which may explain their propensity to walk or run instead of flying.
To match the color scheme of the last uploaded photos I chose this 2011 shot from California. Walking down the beach to the Restaurant "Cliff House" in San Francisco I saw this runner - the only other person at this part of the beach at that time. Cliff house was excellent by the way. Fantastic food and a view from your table over the Pacific Ocean.

CN's Q119, with 11,000 feet of international containers bound for export at Robert's Bank, rumbles through the Skoonka Tunnels protected at either end by rock sheds in the Thompson River canyon near Spences Bridge, BC.
